Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Been busy man...
Went up north for labor day. Fishing was abismal, but weve had a few bad winters and kill offs on the lake I mainly fish. And well, you know the ol saying about a bad day fishin.
So also had enough time with the T45 to form an opinion on it. At first plug in, totally tonaly different from the Matsu Washburn P. Not as hot of output, less thumpy lows and the humbucker with the wierd tone controls of the T45 made it not as pleasing to me as the P. But its much more even sounding, articulate and clear. I told myself to get used to it, PVYHenge needs a PVY bass. Well tonight I boiled the T45s problem down to that it doesnt push my MACE as much as the P, even with a big clean boost from the Phase Wizard, theres not enough sustain. I threw my WUMBO muff in front of the MACE...BINGO we have lift off.
WUMBO>MACE is godly.
Ive also started to run the 610 and 218 outa the MACE via my Bear Amps cab box. That combo is quite nice. The 10s and 18s match quite well, punch from the 10s, beef from the 218.

Now lets say that a Doom metal bassist wanted to tune down to oh, say... Drop B... He's lookin' to get that loose and low downtuned tone but at that point, its just too floppy to get the sustain he needs with a standard stainless set. What should he use? I was thinking a 50-110 set of hi beams but I feel like if anyone knows how to get low, its you guys... What string gauges are yall using to get down low on a 4 string?

I tune to B standard and just use the bottom five strings of a five string set.
So many sad little G strings will be lost, but that does seem like the best way to go...
I use sartoris method too. Otherwise, you can just order a custom set from BSO.
Precisely the reason I got a 5 string. Just saying. I'd go with what the gents above said if you're wanting something not floppy.
Yep, you want much bigger strings. Something with higher tension like hex-core or flats (if that tone works for you) wouldn't hurt either.

Was researching the ibanez last night to get an idea what it was called. Well close as I can gather which is there were like 5 models with names and serial numbered.
The thing is it doesn't feature any identifiers, names engravings or anything anywhere. Nor does it match perfectly any description. It however does have the very earliest headstock with legit Gibson scroll and diamond. So apparently this is like an original unit. apparently the rare but more common white models have gone for $2,000+ quite often.
So it's not pristine by any means, but it's got to either be a test production or a very 1st gen that didn't get continued as a legit named model.

Damn looked up two sources for arm of the maestro trem. $30 is the best I can find. A full replacement would be like $300! Thank god it's all there but the arm.
I will add IME, if you want that low loose downtuned tone, you want floppier strings. I just recently found a set of D'addarios that are like 50-120. Its their normal 50-110 with a thicker bottom string. Its perfect for C standard and drop A sharp for me. I tried the bottom 4 of a 5 string set and it was to tight for that loose sound.
Damn, no practice today. Drummer got stuck at work. Was supposed to jam with guitarist, but he figured he had stuff to do too. Bummer.
I'm starting to think about tuning my Squier J BEAD. It was supposed to be my standard tuned bass, but I never play it anyway and it just sits in my closet.
