I have a guy who want to trade me a Trace Elliot AH250 w/ matching 210 for some of my stuff
I have no experience with TE, is it worth my time to drive out and try it? It's about an hour round trip.
I searched, but you know how talkbass is. Everyone loves something.

BIG biased Trace user here (so you know). Trace made some great gear - I use it exclusively. You can EQ about any tone you want (ignore those who make you think that Trace gear is ALWAYS scooped - they don't use it or have any clue what they are talking about). You can use pre shaping filters to get that sound, or do what I do - use the EQ to dial in the tone you want and ignore the preshapes.
But the bottom line is: demo it, play with it, and if you like the sound, jump on it. Otherwise, walk away

I think the green V based trace stuff is all based on Fender FMV preamps so it would be scooped. Not like korn, but as much as any fender tube amp is.
Dunno about the rest, but it's got a graphic EQ so I doubt it's at all the the V-type stuff.

If it's older, pre-Peavey TE you could probably sell it here for a profit if you don't like it. Not that there's anything wrong with the post-Peavey stuff, but the folks that like it seem to REALLY like the older stuff.
thanks. After considering it I am going to hold out for the Beta.I played a silver face for a minute but the distortion was broken and the amp was slightly on the fritz. Their both kinda cool but I would not pay a premium for either version. I think the beta is cooler sounding IMO but I guess the concert is supposed to be louder.
Edit: I forgot it's the Dixie Dave amp and I guess it's 200w vs the beta 100w

Corey I told my guitar player about your Traynor and he said that a YBA1 is on his list, he's focused on finding a first gen Model T right now.
I have so much trouble keeping up with this thread, feels like I just pop my head in occasionally, ask a question then pop back out! But here is another one, ha. The doom band I joined a few months ago is starting to gig regularly now and we'll be recording our first demo very soon, so I think it's time to properly set up a bass for it. Right now I'm using my Gibson Tbird with Rotosound 66's in 50-110, though we tune to C standard so the tension is a little sloppy. I was thinking about trying the Steve Harris Rotosounds, as they should have more tension and a more old school sound. Anyone here have any experience with these (or other recommendations for this genre/tuning) before I go making a post in the strings forum (which I don't really feel like doing)? Thanks!
The only thing i don't like about roto flats is the monel makes it a quieter string but the tension and tone are the shiz. Tonally the Harris and 66 should sound exactly the same. They are the same string type just the A and D strings are slightly bigger on the Harris set. The silk is also a different color on the Harris set. That's pretty much it.
ALL dinosaur jr is good, some are great. Get BUG. Where you been? is good too! But some days I just hit play on the whole discography. Its killer, even the middle of the road albums have a nice soft lazy psychedelic feel that goes well with a bud.
As for uncle tupelo, get No Depression.. also check out Trace by Sonvolt.
So the tension on those should be okay down in C standard then? Or, at least, higher than I'm getting now? Do they really sound the same? I thought the stainless rounds would be a lot brighter, but then again Steve has a pretty bright tone anyway (which I dig).
Speaking of Trace, the Trace Elliot stuff can be amazing. Its a very robust tone with a very musical eq. You can tweak the poopie out em abd everything sounds good. We've played some shows where the other band plays a trace and I always have envied that deep, lively pulsing throb of his rig. Definitely worth a try.
My bad I meant 77's. I always get the numbers confused. You'll get just a little extra tension out of the Harris set but the 77 and Harris are the same string. I've played my 74 p bass in drop c and the 77's feel and sound great IMO. Its the only String I have ever used on it and I've had the same set for YEARS!! I've took them off for rounds a few times but they always end up right back on the bass. They just fit the bass the best.
