Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

the drummer from def leppard only had one arm...

Ha ha... that quip deserves a one-handed clap..................

What did he do to break it? Was it worthy?
I had just a quick phone conversation but apparently it was like this. Now keep in mind this is a thirty-nine year old grown man, husband, dad of two, and holder of a semi-prominent position in the federal judiciary. It was his wife's birthday party. There was a scavenger hunt. He climbed up on some sort of sculpture. He fell off. I think he is a bit embarrassed.

Hmmmm....alcohol involved here? Magic 8-ball says "Probably."

Well, tweaked the Real Tube today. Still not sure. Sounds better, but not what I was aiming for. American didn't do it either. Still not thick enough. I can get a nice hard rock or 80's metal tone from both of them, but nothing doomy. Also tweaked the Rivera Metal Shaman and got a nice tone for thrash/death. Pretty awesome. And the Supercollider and I keep going back and forth. Sounds good, but I'm thinking I just might not like fuzz on guitar or bass. May have to find something else.

Recommendations for thick, doomy OD? Might just have to pick up the Sabbra Cadabra by Catalinbread. It's Iommi in a box, but it also carries a price tag. Other cheaper solutions are welcome!

Rat or variant of Rat.

Ibanez CM5 ClassicMetal might be your $35 used ticket. The switch my be kaput, couple bux replacement from Mouser will fix it.

Really? I've never tried a Rat, except the Blower Box. Never gelled with it. Always got lost in the mix at least a bit compared to other pedals, even though it sounded great solo. Never tried it with guitar, though, so maybe. Any affordable Rat options, or notable Rats (or clones) to look out for?

Sunn uses Rats, they can be very heavy. For guitar almost any of them will work, so maybe try a cheap one and see if you like the sound of it. I like both the LM308 and OP07 versions, but upgrading to the 308 is an easy mod. From there study up on the boutique versions and decide if you want something a little nicer. The regular Rats cut a lot of low end so if you want one for bass then boutique or a separate clean blend is the way to go. MXR M85, Fuzzrocious Rat Tail are good options.

Did you try the Joyo UD?

Digitech Bad Monkey with the bass cranked, or looked for the modded one for extended bass response and gain. It's also a DI and in a pinch a mono headphone amp.

So are you looking for fuzz, OD or distortion? You seem to be commenting on fuzz, looking for OD and testing distortions. Maybe I have that confused, but I'm not really following what it is you want aside from your tonal desires. Come play my ****. I have several fuzz pedals that get thick and doomy. It sounds like a rat may be your thing. I have a boutique rat clone that may be up your alley.

Not yet. Hoping to tonight.

Again, come play my ****. I have one you could fanoodle to your hearts content.

Anybody know or have experience with rent payments that require service fees? My landlords require that I make my payments through a website they provided me(paylease IIRC). Every time I have to make a payment there is a $2.95 processing fee. I know it's only 3 bucks, but it just grinds me the wrong way. It seems like a clear violation of my lease agreement seeing how the lease mentions nothing other than the exact rent amount. I can't really find any info on the topic. Not that I really want to plot and scheme, but if this is in fact a breach of contract it would be cool to use it as a shield of sorts from the potential bum ****ing come check out and deposit refund time, or even as an out from the lease for me if things with my lady go south and I have to move out.

It probably is a violation of the lease agreement, but trying to get anyone that could do anything about it to give it their time and attention ($36 over a year-long lease) probably isn't going to be easy. Plus you'll probably piss off the landlord, who has the ability to make your life very difficult. I'd see if there's a local tenant resource co-op in your neighborhood. If there is you can talk to them and ask for advice, if not then probably best to let it die. Is it poopy and illeagal? Probably. Is it worth the potential sh*tstorm to recover your $36? Probably not.

I'd bring up the monthly charge when they try and charge you for stuff when you move out. Use that $36 to put torwards anything.

That would bother me too. My complex I used to live in changed management like 5 times in two years. They would never give notice, then you go to pay rent and they'd each have a different payment scheme you had to race to get setup or go get the requisite style legal tinder.
