Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Yeah a custom cab would be straight trade IMO cause those can be $1000+ easy but see below...

I looked up his cabs. Nothing about his build methods would make me want to own one of his cabs. His finishing is nice if that is your thing, and probably does fine for guitar. For bass he builds $hit. Better off with a used commercial cab.

Plus, a cabinet doesn't fix his problem.
He's looking for more amp.
Interesting enough i think tubes is what he needs. The tube volume effect could help.

Them again Max you may be finally bumping into interference from mixed cabinets.

Maybe it's time to use a crossover and a clean high powered sub.

There's dozens of SVT CLs on gc used, reverb, ebay, they're a commodity at this point, just take your time and shop around.

I dont want to wait!!! This is MERICA!!! Now now now!!! Plus I feel I can make my money back selling this Fender at some point, the VTA 400 is on my PVY to get list. SVT deals will be around later...

Hes gonna build me a 408 clone if i go that route. So it wont be his normal "bass" guitar cab.

Exactly why im leaning towards the amps right now. I have plenty of cabs. And Ive blown every crossover Ive ever used so no thank you...

It could be phase issues but its unlikely to me.

Not a passive crossover. An active one that you run before your pedal board and get the lowest lows out of your other cabinets. Huge bass+fuzz and tone from your amps and cabinets.

Id rather not add more complexity of a crossover to my setup. Trying to keep things simpler. I try to eq my amps for crossover like qualities.

Im really thinking the MACE plus a 200+ watt tube amp is what I need. And not gonna lie a working VTA400 would look quite perfect in PVYHenge. And if I still need more watts, VTA400 slaved into my 800 Booster.

That's how I feel about most of those "doom" cab makers. A guitar cab with 4 bass 15s doesn't equal bass cab.

The irony is that these cabs are valued for their volume and tone, both of which suffer substantially from their poor design.

Exactly. It has a certain niche value. To some a Vulcan is equal to an old SVT or matamp or custom Dunwich. To some its still a poopy SS peavey that should be no more than $200. Thats what makes this tough. And Im a little bit leary about the 2 amps value aswell, but theyre both decently rare...one of them is PVY still, although broken, it is a Festival series that will easily be worth something in the KVLT maybe not Vulcan worth but damn close...and the other is good trade bait to a certain niche aswell, its a 200 watt bassman with a 5 band rotary EQ, who wouldnt like that.

My cabs defo cant handle a modern power amp with 1000s of watts. And a vulcan just sold last month for $800 bucks so at that point $1000 isnt out of the question. So I could easily get an svt for that scratch. But like I said its a niche value. Who knows how long id wait for a SVT. And tube watts is always double SS. Both amps although, 200 watts, are actual bass amps that push a lot more bass than my MACE inherently.

I still dont know...custom cab, 2 200 watt amps, or hold out for a SVT that may never come.

A saying from my family

"Step 1: Don't get too excited."

Wait and think on it.

Also I don't think tube watts = double SS watts at least not always. Especially that VBA 400 is known to be rather vanilla in tone and not as loud as you'd expect.

The SVT if you try to Max the bass/use that ultra low switch, it won't push as hard either.

I think a 120-400 watt tube amp into one of your existing cabs, and or a big SS head into a really good cab or sub/crossover ala @mbelue suggestion would get the best of both. Obviously it's a pricey way to go, but simpler in the end.

Either way something needs to change, but it's a matter of vintage history/watts/cabs/$$$ so take it all in and take your time so you don't realize you bought the wrong solution to the problem.

Edit: or that ha

You guys are all talking like Im trading my only Vulcan away, no matter what happens with this deal, I still have a Vulcan.

If you forget the whole Vulcan mistique, 2 200 watt tube amps will 99.9% be more valuable than a 300 watt SS head.
I think everyone here knows how much that Vulcan is worth to you. Which is what I was referring to. Maybe is inflated by mystique, but it seems to have made you rather happy. That coupled with their rarity i guesstimate up a few notches.
Still if you think it's a good deal then that's all that matters.

Honestly with Pvyhenge several of us live vicariously.

VTA looks pretty cool and will fit the Henge. I like that the overdrive is attained by cascading one channel into the other with a patch cable, and that you can do it either way. Different EQ on each side, passive on one, active on the other, not too shabby. I look forward to hearing it!

So I have an older direct blood relative with bi-polar depression. They drive everyone crazy, this trip was great, other than their incessant nagging and judgements. I am reading 90% of people diagnosed, have a relative with it. Does anyone know the statistic of likelihood because someone has it, I am to develop it or any other younger people in my family?

My brother has it as well, I believe most people developed it through puberty and it's much more rare to develope it later in life. But I am not a doctor and brain medicine is hard.

Generally its something that manifests itself during puberty/before your mid 20s. And it varying levels of severity, one can have type 1, 2 etc.

I'm working on getting my recording setup to share some of these sweet tones. Maybe you guys will like them and maybe you can give me some tips. I'd also like to demo some pedals. The LWA Extreme octave and my two Mr. Black pedals definitely deserve a listen. They are pretty dope, and with the volume pedal I got from the lady, the combo of the latter two can get very eerie and atmospheric.

My Dad severely had it. So far so good for me but I used to worry about if it was in the genes. They say though insane people never ask if they are crazy, they just are.
