Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Yeah, it's a bummer. It's a great vehicle, Bose sound system, comfortable. And for $300 it was worth it (I have maybe $700 invested in it now with registration and the new alternator). I'll probably keep it and drive it into the ground. There's a nice 80s Mercedes 300TD Wagon for sale locally that I'm looking at now.
You haven't expereinced slow 'til you've driven an 1980something diesel Benz.
My last VW was a 2005 TDI, the "upgraded" 110hp PD model. I loved the idea of it, but it's a miserable car for a place that gets snow. They don't get heat unless yo have it under load, which means no window defrosters, either. It's also slower than poopie, ignore all that talk about "torque" coz none of it matters when you try to pass an 18 wheeler on the interstat and you realized you forgot to formulate a plan going into it of how you'd accomplish that goal.
I dunno what Washington is like, snow wise, but if you've got to deal with frosted windows, or fogged windows from rain, diesel sucks.
That said, the old Benz diesels run forever.

I traded my TDI in for a gasser at the height of the fuel crisis like what, 10 years ago? Yeah. Damn. That was a long time.
Anyways, diesel fuel was like 2x the cost of gasoline and wasn't giving me that good of a return on investment. I wouldn't have had that much of cost increase, fuel wise, with a big ole V8 under the hood in lieu of the little turbo 1.9 smoker. Matter of fact, I tried very hard to convince the wife we should buy the Doge Magnum wagon with the V8 in it, but evidently that was irresponsible.
Hey all. I've read through most of the thread on and off but haven't posted before. Sucks there are less people around these days but I'm glad the people that stuck around did.
Been trying to get a Doom project going for a couple years now but nothing has stuck. Small town living is a bummer when it comes to that. Hopefully 2017 will be the year.
@Sartori how does that peavy with the Ric pickup sound? I was thinking of doing something similar and stumbled across the picture of yours this morning.
Curious what tuning and strings you guys are using?
Finally getting the punk/crust band I'm in to do some stuff in D standard. Gives me some sludgy satisfaction for sure, but getting a Doom project going needs to happen soon.

Sounds like you're in better shape than me. Finding a functional heavy band at all has been tough here. Had one for a while, but the "functional" part was a bit lacking. Only one guy from that band is actually doing anything now, and he's the one I would have happily kept jamming with. Ah well, still determined to get it together. Need a drummer and singer now.
It sounds good. Not exactly like a 4003, but in the ballpark. Not quite as much high mid bite. Also it looks black in the picture, but it's actually purple. This is important. Because purp.
I tune BEAD and use D'addario XLs, gauges 130, 100, 80, 60 for my doom bands.

Found a good deal on another short scale doomer. Conrad knock-off, and it sounds/plays t1ts, heavy as f__ck though. Gonna get a black pickguard made I think.
Big town living isn't much better....I live in a musically dead cul-de-sac (well, not dead, just lame) south of Sartori but can't justify driving a hour + one way to play with some dudes. I've resorted to doing an online fake/virtual band with a guy in the midwest....it's turning out good, but I miss the feeling of speakers pushing some air.
I'm a sucker for acrylic instruments, something to do with becoming a teen in the '80s I assume.
Both of these just seem like mid-high gain scooped tones to me. Shouldn't be too difficult with what you have on hand.
As for Grand Magus from what I can tell and have seen dude just has a cranked up marshal tone. In this video at one point the camera pans down and you can see all hes got on the ground is a wah pedal. Not to say they don't have something else hidden away, but I've read interviews where he says its just Gibsons into marshals.
As for Candlemass you should be able to get 90% of the way there pretty easy. Here's a recording I just made with a close tone using the QM into my Mesa Rectoverb. Tuned D standard. QM settings underneath link.
Edit: Actually going back and listening to it on headphones, it for sure sounds like my gain is too high and the first part was for sure on the bridge not the neck pickup like I played it. Point is you can get damn close with the stuff you've got.

This might be heresy to say, but I honestly don't think Candlemass' sound is anything special. That's not to take away from them being a good band, just their guitar and bass tone have always sounded fairly standard to me.
Thanks! My wallet and I thank you. That's actually been the most frustrating part - I know that with the plethora of dirt I have, I should make this work. I just can't seem to get it down, though. Guess I'll keep twiddling those knobs. Clearly I need to reduce the EQ for pretty much all bands. Thanks for the start!

You like what you like. I think it's more than the sum of their parts thing. If they didn't have their phenomenal singer, I don't think I'd enjoy them anywhere near as much. And his singing alone wouldn't entice me to listen to a band/genre I was uninterested in. But together, they just kick some butt. One of my faves for non-fuzzed out doom.
