Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Hey fellow stoners, I'm new to bass(not to strings) and wanted to ask you what kind of amp/cabs are more suited for stoner rock. I play a new Epi Thunderbird, just buying my first half stack. It's gonna be a Peavey Tour450 and 410tvx cab, you think it will work for stoner TB bass suned in C? What bass/amps/cabs you use for stoner?

Well you're def there with the epi Tbird.
I've played a peavey tour 700 watt amp before, was nice. Eventually you'll want to go full tube/810-215 cab but that's a decent wad of cash your gonna throw down.

the tour is okay, i'd use a sansamp vt or something like that to shape the Sound before the tour, it has a bit of a modern Sound to my ears.
at this point you just need to be loud enough.

Last time I tried our former bass player's gear(Fender bassman300, Fender pro 215) played with a Rickenbacker...gotta say I LOVED the sound. So in the future I'll probably pick up some tubes, no doubt.

a vt is good to make a SS rig Sound more like a tube rig. can't go wrong with that! I use a VT w/ a Fender rumble head in my punk/Hardrock band

The first goal is to be heard with respect to the band you are playing with. After than, it is a pretty big world of tone quest. There really is no generic standard for what is doom worthy. There are guys in this thread running full Hiwatt stacks, full ampeg stacks, full peavey stacks, tubes, power amps, all different kind of distortion and odd effects. It really comes down to what meets your goals, your needs, and your budget.
Does anyone have any feelings about the upcoming Pallbearer album? I've heard a few preview snippets off of Heartless and it isn't what I was expecting. I'm not married to their previous CDs or anything, I just found it to be a noticeable departure. It feels a little more traditional rock to me.
I've always found them kind of boring, although i don't think i gave the previous album enough of a chance
I might be pretty atypical for this thread:
1. I don't down tune, just straight 4 string E-G
2. I play with relatively slim strings 040-095
3. Plays an Ibanez Mikro sub short scale 28,6" (though with the stock pickups swapped with a pair of EMG Geezer Butler J/P)
4. Plays a solid state 130W combo + 345W active PA speaker spiced up with a little grit from an always on Joyo Orange Juice (and EQ'ed to tame the horn in the PA from sounding awfull with dirt)
5. My list of regular doom/sludge/stoner bands that I actually listen to can be counted on one hand
The only thing I think I have in common with most of the other guys in this thread is that I play in a band that creates slow heavy music in the darker end of the musical spectra and loves it.
I guess my point is, play whatever gear does what you have in mind and gets you and your band sound wise to where you want to go and have pictured in your minds ear or what ever.
There's no point in doing what ever everybody else is doing unless it takes you where you want to go yourself.
If you think your gear sounds like you have envisioned there's no need in getting something else, and if you are searching for a specific sound and want help with that you need to be more specific in what you want.
As someone else said the most important thing to start with is probably to make sure your gear can play properly up to the rest of the band.
But honestly, I managed to keep up with another band I played in with a 60W tube head with 1 15" against an extremely hard hitting drummer, another bass player who played a 100W tube amp with a 2 15" cab, a guitarist/singer that played through a 100W tube head with 4 12" and screamed out from the top of his lungs as well.
I did however play with a rather bright tone that prevented the amp going into fart mode, and I did push it extremely hard.
Point is there are limits for how loud you want to go.
Once we had a small bar gig with that setup (with only the singer through the PA) we played at such volume the pressure of the sound waves literally caused severe pain in your ears unprotected.

I liked their first album. Very traditional doom with some funeral kind of elements, I guess. Haven't listened to much of anything else by them.
I agree with Sam and Peavey in regards to BadBassist's question.
Also if yall sound muddy, ask your guitar player to eq some of his bass out. Yall need to work together. The at home tones wont work as expected.

That'll work for now, though I think Peavey's 215s are their best cabs, personally. Peavey gear is durable, good sounding, and can be had quite cheaply. Even their tube heads are pretty affordable as far as tube gear goes. I would look at some of the older Peavey heads like the Mark series. They're indestructible and take pedals well, in addition to having pretty decent drive of their own. Also dirt cheap. There are some older Peavey tube heads that are pretty affordable as well.
I use a Rickenbacker 4003S, an Epiphone T-bird, and a heavily modded Peavey. I tune BEAD.
My amp is a Mesa D-180, through a Sunn 2000S 2x15 cab loaded with Faital 15PR400 drivers. This stuff is expensive, though.
VT pedal is nice if you don't have an amp that will do that sort of sound on its own.
Fender Bassman 300 with a 215 is a pretty damn good rig, but pricy.
I run a Fender 1200S through either an SWR Goliath SR. or two Epifani PS115s and rarely through a Kustom Tuck n Roll 3x15, they are all loud as shag. The peavey tour/vx setup should be good to start with I'd probably upgrade a year or two down the road though depending on the direction of the band but it's a solid rig to start with.
VTRM and a SS power amp is very capable combination. Carvin seems to have dropped the HD1500 power ampt from the line up, that's a shame. It's a good match for most of my cabs. Running it bridged into an 8 Ohm Cab or spilt into two 4 Ohm cabs provides lots of options. Plus the pre takes to pedals well.
just ordered a mr echo plus delay by sib from a seller on reverb for 99 dollars (my mom sent me a card with 50 bucks)
i like the slam function and the fact that it has a gain/volume/drive knob
not sure if it will sound like the moog i sold in november, but i'm super excited about the slam function
(you can do a blast of 30ms delay that sounds like epic stoner/drone feedback with one of the footswitches)

In a couple of day I will be with all you tube heads.
I am getting an old just recently renovated Dynacord Bass King, 50W all tube head from '63/'64.
My plan is for it to take my active PA speakers place as the unit that handles more of the mids and high mids and slightly overdriven tone, while my solid state Trace Elliot GP75SM 130W 15" combo takes care of more of the low mids and lows.
I still haven't decided for a cab to go with it yet, but I ponder on a 4 10".
It's not exactly a beauty, but having owned a later version with a solid state preamp stage, still with power tubes, the Bass King T, as my first bass amp ever, I am quite sure it will deliver
