Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

no students, gonna just leave when the traffic dies down a little, maybe i can play a little when i get home to hasten the settling down of the new flatwounds, kinda liking the lynx through the ibanez ddl dealy into the overdriven d180 for that illusive jesus and mary chain bass sound that i'm always trying to get without getting a swollen pickle

What do you guys think of Rogue basses? Decent? I've always wanted to try a fretless, just because, and there's a cheap Rogue fretless on my local CL. Says it may need a new nut or bridge adjustment, as the E string sounds "dead". What do you think?
There are way better cheapo basses than Rogue. Avoid.

Little pedalboard shot. Lovin the volt thrower. The mid knob is great for letting me get a little fatter clean tone while still having a great grindy bass distortion.View attachment 1098247
That Dunwich. Do you ever run it and the Megalith at the same time?

If you are looking for an enourmous crushing fuzz tone, it has it in spades. We have some riffs that i feel like it kind of makes. Just being able to take a mix and crush it underneath you can be handy.
My Dunwich muff does that, with the mids switched on. In some settings it sounds like a Soviet Tu-95's engines.

It sucks our man was banned but please, doom lord, if it must be so, let it be because of this post:
What!?

Like a perma ban?

And for what?

I made some pretty offensive posts in the thread in the amp sub forum about Class D amps vs. Class A/B amps, and managed to get myself good down and dirty wallowing in the mud, to such a degree I was sure that my days on this site was over, nothing happened though, not even a warning.

Anyway, on a completely different note I did as I mentioned in another post in this thread and pulled the trigger on another Joyo Orange Juice, since the one I got already is stuck in the assignment of functioning as an always on pedal in front of the tube amp part of my 2 amp rig, to add a bit of grindy grit to my tone.

The new one will have a regular heavy overdrive function for whenever more grind is needed.
Nah, it was for linking a Louis CK bit entitled "you're an *******," when someone was calling me too PC. I guess people don't like it when I get real with them.

All I do is call people out on their douchebaggery. But that's what I get for going into the general population on this site. Dudes will boast about how un-PC they are and then get all flabbergasted about their own sacred cows. It's weak.

I can get more if you're interested, I'm in no real rush to sell it so let me know.
Oooh. What do all the preamp controls do?

News from Sleep's website, initially released in morse code:

INITIALIZE NEW TRANSMISSION 2017 CE SLEEP NEARING COMPLETION OF NEW ALBUM ENGINEERING ACCOMPLICE: NOAH LANDIS LOCATION: 37.8044 N, 122.2711 W RELEASE DATE: UNDETERMINED RECORD LABEL: UNDETERMINED

Could it be true?
Smoke 'em if you got 'em!
Oh man. This is excellent news.

Hey guys, do any of you use noise gate pedals? If so, what? Pros/cons?
Nah. I don't have any "always on" fuzzes, and the dirt on my head is not so over the top that it squeals when I'm not playing, as long as I'm muting the strings. I like being able to get feedback when I want it.

Yo. They ever get the takbass app going again? I'm trying to quit facebook but need a gear nerd fix. How's everyone been?
I stay on facebook largely for band promotion.

Ok stoners/doomers: need your help. Not for me, this is for my main man. My buddy is fixing my Guild and in the meantime loaning me his Gibson Thunderbird. I want to thank him for always putting my musical output first. Always ahead of what he's trying to do. I'm pretty sure he wants a dirt machine like a big muff but with mucho mids. First thought is a Dunwich. Any other fuzzy/bassy pedals I should consider? I wanna get something real nice for him as a thank you. Important detail: it doesnt have to sound good in the mix, he's trying to do a solo bass thing.
Get Dunwich to make a copy of the modified muff he built for me.

Probably with different art.

But seriously, it lays waste to all before it. It's kinda like the Swollen Pickle (also a great pedal), but with the mids emphasis being more in the lower-middle mids, rather than in the high mids. It's also a lot less glitchy on low Bs, and has less uncontrollable low end (though still quite a bit). As mentioned above, in some settings it sounds like a Soviet bomber. Really is the pinnacle of fuzz for me. I don't even have the mids all the way up and it can still crush a mix if I'm not careful. Unlike a lot of fuzzes, the amount of distortion is pretty variable; I can get almost none at all, or full-on fuzz (most fuzz pedals I've found that after the first little turn of the fuzz/sustain/distortion knob, don't really change in sound).

Other pretty good off the rack muff fuzz pedals are the Way Huge Swollen Pickle, and Russian Pickle, the Wren & Cuff Tall Font Russian, the Mountainking Megalith, and tons of others, really.

Been a minute since I posted a rig shot... Been a minute since I have had the big rig out. Apartment living in the worst for a bassist.

Invalid Link Removed
Yeah, I don't even have a rig at home, for this reason. It lives at the rehearsal studio.

Nice! And I hear you...we live in a condo so most of my practice time is through headphones.
What kind of bass is that?
Yeah, my upstairs neighbors get pissed when I even listen to music loud. Especially, apparently, if it's Chelsea Wolfe.

Seeing all these rigs made me wanna postView attachment 1117129
Nice texturing on the black Meatsmoke. What cabs are those?

Hey guyz, what are your high gain blasting distortion of choice?

I'm new to bass and I took my white face Rat off my guitar board to use it with the bass and it is not exacly what I'm looking for. There's too much bass lost when engaging.
The Dunwich custom muff I described earlier in this post.

In terms of low end loss, I think a lot of people try to set their clean volume and fuzz/distortion volume the same, and that's why there's a perceived loss of low end (although some pedals like the regular Rat do actually cut it a bit, I think). What drive/distortion/fuzz pedals do is add a crapload of signal in the mids and highs, which increases the overall volume. So if you dial the volume back so it's the same loudness as the clean tone, you are in effect cutting the low end.

(currently watching the liked posts counter tick up as Satori works his way through like a month worth of posts from his ban, welcome back)
Thanks, it's good to be back.

This and the Dunwich thread are the only threads I bothered getting completely caught up in.

Lol, mkay. Just bringing the BlowerBox tonight with the Ampeg SVT Pro 3 and my two Schroeder 15's. There's two guitars to contend with.

Funnily enough, a different guy on craigslist I responded to called me a bozo after I told him 'No thanks, have a good one' about playing in his band. This was after 5 days of one liner emails offering zero info on what his band/project was all about...until just now when he told me who they actually were. Wouldn't ya know it, they're this pretty terrible band that's been posting/looking for guys for years, and I bet they weren't getting any responses, so they put up a vaguely interesting but ambiguous ad.

Part of me wants to rip this guy a new one just for the satisfaction of it, the other part realizes that would be a waste of my time.

Lol. What a jackass.

Also, nice rig, I bet it will sound great.

Welcome back. You know to stay here in the dungeon where its safe. Thats what you get when you leave

I dont in any of our music. I prefer what they do seperately to what they do together. The vplt thrower just makes the megalith fizzier. Which isnt terrible. But not really what im looking for. It also makes the feedback pretty uncontrollable.

So last night's audition went ok, it was one of those deals where I only played for 30-40 min. because they had another dude coming after me to try out. This would be a pretty easy gig musically, nothing too challenging, so it has the potential to become boring if I was asked to join. We'll see who they choose and if I'm still feeling it at that point. Ampeg sounded good even though I didn't really get to dial it in...

Edit: deleted a bunch of touchy feely hoohah

Fuzzed out rock can be a ton of fun, but only if you can get creative with it from time to time. Doing straight ahead can get boring no matter how much energy there is to it.

Miracle happened yesterday. 69 days after being stolen from me, I drove to Kentucky to pick up my dog Stella! I have no idea what happened to her over the last 2 months or how the hell she got to Kentucky from St. Louis but I am so happy to have her back!
