Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I just got done listening to "Blind" off the new Elder with my headphones AND my subs, laying next to the subs. I highly recommend it for a self-indulgent over the top thump-fest in the gut. And, the headphones were probably a little too loud...

I've written it before, and I'll write it again: Jack Donovan is KILLING IT on this CD. DeSalvo is the star, no doubt. But that rhythm section is a beast, and Donovan is relentless. Dude deserves his own thread. I need to check out the back catalog, but I suspect he's never shown this level of mastery before.

Makes me proud to be a Stoner/Doom bassist, even if he has moved somewhat beyond it.

Oh yes it does! But, I have one of those infamous Art of Noise fiberglass rigs. Weighs 35 pounds, but truly horrible rattling in the cab. The 1500 brings it like no other amp I've had, including the Mesa M-9. Anyway, the cab was virtually unusable, and I was about to part it out, maybe get a new build using the old speakers.

Then I put my Auralex Gramma ON TOP of the cab 2 weeks ago. Every bit of rattle and distortion disappeared. The DOOM is back. Not more thoughts of parting it out or getting another cab. At least until it totally disintegrates due to the truly crappy build.

Yeah, the horror stories are very real. But I did end any debate on the Gramma for myself. It seriously isolates vibrations. For the first time, the cab sounds as good as I read about from other GB fans.

I like how all topics are considered on this one thread, with no judgment or attitude. Wish I had more to offer.

A few months back I posted about picking up a Godin Shifter with crazy fret buzz. After loosening the truss rod a bunch, it's better, but still buzzy. Would shimming the neck at the outer edge of the pocket help? Seems like it would angle the neck away, putting a slightly bigger angle between the string and the next fret up from where I'm fretting.

No. But you may need a proper set up for the strings and tuning that your using.

Stoner metal, to me, just sort of maintains that sleazy sort of throwback sound. It's more stereotypical silly in lyrics, lots of fantasy and drug references abound, but style of music it's akin to the classic '70s slower metal.

Doom takes your Sabbath sound and just ramps it up. Probably slower, definately "heavier."

I think like any broad form of music you're into, there's so many pigeon holes and bands that end up included because they're just part of the legacy. I mean, thinka bout what music you're a big fan of. Is it easy to pigeon hole it? "What's jazz?" could lead to ten thousand different artists, each one wildly different than the next and many of them only tangentially soundalikes, but they're all "jazz" to a serious jazz fan.

Pretty much summed it up. Don't know about any of you guys, but I thoroughly enjoy going on binges of stoned meadow of doom's (stoned ravenous fuzz) YouTube channel. I started on there by finding out about Truck Fighters, the rest is history. You'll run into gems like Egypt, Somali Yacht Club, and Samsara Blues Experiment.

You just rattled off 4 of the most under-rated bands I can think of. Especially Egypt, who are amazing. I'd add Lo-Pan to that mix, and if you haven't checked out their new ep "Intensions", you're missing another great one.

just my personal experience.

to be fair, when the wife is involved, _I'm_ the guitarist, so.. not casting blame on either in particular :)

i remember when that channel first started and he would reach out to ask permission to add our albums. Now it's so big that bands are the ones asking him to post their stuff.
