Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Ever feel like your "tone" is a moving target? I have been trying to get my trusty Trace Elliot head to zero in on the sound in my head. And falling short. So, I gave my GK 800RB another go the other day. Now I'm confused! I'm digging the GK more now. So I took it down from Ebay. I figure I hold on toboth of em for now til I figure out what's what.
Ear fatigue is my constant enemy on tone. After tweaking about 20-30min I can't hear subtle differences. I have to take a break and come back to it. Seems like every time I do this I have an epiphany when I come back. It's my biggest problem with finding a dirt pedal I like.

I can never get a distorted bass tone I love, which sucks. I can dial in an amazing doom guitar tone almost immediately though.

I felt the same until I splurged on a Darkglass Alpha/Omega. Most of the clips are djent crap and don’t do the pedal justice. It can get pretty grindy which is what I am after.

The Damnation MBD-1 also has peaked my interested but thing just too big for my limited board space.

As mlove stated ive found that i prefer a grindy overdrive/distortion to a fuzz on bass. My favorite bass drives tend to be Rat or OCD based. Ive pretty much got the tone in my head out of the dunwich volt thrower with led clipping diodes with the gain pretty low and the volume high. For fuzzier stuff ive been real happy with the mountainking megalith for a long time too. Now that ive kind of moved to guitar in my band they both still sound great so i probably wont do too much dirt changing.

Whelp, looks like I have no impulse control. Was planning on holding onto some cash for an amp upgrade, instead the Boneshaker goes on stupid-cheap sale and I buy another....

...
The Boneshaker seemed to be awesome but all that control just makes me want to nitpick more. Always like 90% of the way to what I was trying to accomplish never perfect.

There I was just saying how dissatisfied I was with the pedal.....

I finally have the Boneshaker set the way I like. But I use it essentially as an amp sim.
There you go, enough justification for $35shipped .

Maybe i just need a do-over to get comfy with it.

not the first time they do it. they can't seem to even give these away.

Yeah I've been curious why. They seemed to sell pretty good in the first place. Honestly, it seemed like a ton of these revamped DOD pedals have sold like hot cakes at first then they started to close them out. I know they're all limited runs and IMO highly underrated, not just for their price point either. Love every one I've used.

Yeah this time around I need to buy one. I agree about the tweakability on em. That's a curse to many a pedal. I've learned to get close enough to what I want and just enjoy it. One reason I do like simple pedals.

So my ban is up, but another one will result in a permaban. So I probably will not be very active here.

I'm glad I self edit and hold back many thoughts and posts hahaha. I'd probably be suspended otherwise.

The last one I had kinda felt like 2 different pedals tied to one button. A decent(not stellar) dirt pedal and an EQ. It just didn't seem like the EQ interacted with the dirt. Sure it changed the sound but I suppose I expected the EQ to change the character and flavor of dirt.
So I was trying to use it like a general EQ and then dial up the dirt to a happy level. Then there was the whole depth knob doesn't work issue. Craigslist score resold it in a week for like $50.

Looking around I found a thread that has as mod for the depth knob that is supposed to make it much more usable. Funny enough, the Digitech rep shows up and ***** all over the mod.

Yeah, I was in that thread. Weird. “No, we didn’t intend for the depth knob to do anything really, it’s functioning as it should. The mod will void warranties.” That’s pretty much the official stance. I tried to love the Boneshaker, as I’m a HUGE DOD fan (and Black Arts!) but this one just didn’t do it. Did the same and flipped it later.
