Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

So i had a proper play today with both my wahs A/B-ing them. I actually like the tone of both wahs for different reasons and i cant quite justify having two on my board. So i think i'm going to have to move on the Wilson Freaker. i recorded a little snippet of one of my bands songs where i use a wah.







@simon88wilson I love my crybaby, but I've never seen one like it. It's the white bass version, but has a footswitch. I love using cocked wah settings on it, but I'm bummed out that there's a volume drop when I switch it on. If it weren't for the cocked wah tones I love, I'd probably have the normal one that activates when you start moving it.

Sounds like you have an early bass crybaby, which was a standard crybaby with one capacitor changed in it. To be honest it's not too difficult to add a small buffer circuit in there like the FoxRox Wah retrofit. you can then change the volume of the pedal and it plays better with some fuzz pedals.

Ive had some time spent now with two new noisemakers. I put that egc neck on a mij geddy body and put nordy 70s in it. I honestly didn't expect to like this bass as much as I do, but its quickly become my main bass for heavier aggressive stuff. Such a great bass. I'm thinking of selling my murdered out 4003s now.

Also grabbed a traynor yba2 for a backup amp that I mainly use at the practice space. For 450, this amp kills. One of the better purchases ive made lately.

Speaking of albini, we have a song at about 165 bpm where fuzz just doesn’t cut thru (but I will try to lower the fuzz/tone knobs next time) and went clean on the rb800 for note clarity and I’ll be damned if it didn’t sound a bit like the tone off the goat album. A bit of half a$$ research revealed that indeed he used that amp (and a traynor ts200?). And a rat pedal I believe. The thing is I can’t presently afford a dark glass or dunwich but a simple rat pedal or something similar ( sub 100$) is doable. I brought up the blowe box cuz I saw it in the TB classifieds for 80$

@bassboysam I've never tried one, heard about them though. Are they similar to a muff? Sounds like that setting adds a ton of woolliness, do you lose any attack?

based on a muff but I don't know too much more about the design.

with those settings i still get lots of definition. the lows don't get muddy and it has a tight sound.

I done told you sticking that neck on a jazz body would probably make good things happen....

Did you get the Traynor from the classifieds? I almost bought somebody's. Ended up getting a Trace Elliott V-Type hybrid head from the amp rescue center...

Yup you were right. So glad I didn’t end up selling it before I gave it a go as a J. I did grab the traynor from here. Solid price for what it is. I’ve been thinking of picking up a v type pre for a lightweight backup rig actually. How do you like your hybrid?

Cool thanks for the lead. Dig both of those wahs btw. Second one probably sounds better in a mix, but 1st one will cut through better. I like my wahs noticeable.

The second one sounds harsher and therefore better to me.

Well, when you're in a dad band, the other guys are playing the same 20 old nuggets you are.

Because why write your own music? Mustang Sally ain't gonna play itself, and theres middle aged suburban housewifes that want to dance!

Remember, we not like nearly everyone else on TB. I don't get that mindset in general. We play fuzz, dirt, distortion pedals and play loud thru heavy old (and new) gear.

Most of these gigging 'professionals' are the bass players in the band at that local unhip burger bar, crunched in the corner of the room playing 'Margaritaville'.

Yeah that thread is a mess. I don't think some of them realize that growing the local/regional scene, whether it's originals or covers, will help get more gigs.

I can't remember if I refrained from posting in there or not. I know I had started to and erased it numerous times hahaha!

Honestly, my last band got all of our gigs from word of mouth or friends from other bands. We played at least once a month and had to turn down many more due to our day job schedule. Hell I don't know how many times we were asked to fill in and we even did a last minute show when we were on hiatus for half a year already.

Those shows were some of the best because we were playing with and for friends and ones we hadn't even befriended yet. I was only bummed about one show we couldn't make at a festival.

I digress, I do understand where some come from. But what they don't understand is that when you expand the culture, even of one venue, they start doing more shows and bringing more people. More people, especially new ones buy merch, albums, and pay cover. All of which can lead to actually bringing home some money for new gear, merch, etc.
