It was a pretty free-wheeling thread for a long time. We were OK as long as we stayed in here
I often wish the group would migrate back here from FaceDerp. I don't know if there were perma-bans involved or not.
The rest of TB are generally annoying Dadrock coverband weak-backed rootnote-pluckin' folk that just want to make people dance. Don't you dare argue with them. They fill the chowbarn every thursday afternoon for their rippin' set of the hits of yesterday and today. What do us weirdos know?!
I wouldn't necessarily go that far. people like/dislike all kinds of stuff. Mostly the mods go irritated by people from this thread going out to other sub-forums and stirring the pot. Also, we got pretty free with the talk of the plant life, so that didn't help.
I stand by my comment. I dont stir up trouble. I just notice trends in TB at large, thats all. Theres a hivemind, like any busy forum. That mindset is 180 degrees from the experience of our little hidey-hole.
I frequent this thread among a number of others - and other boards. I think the TB crowd is really a mixed bag with some land-mines scattered throughout. Internet forums are like most other groups of people. This is a sampling of the population brought to one place because of a common interest in bass/music, which is a pretty broad "bond". Some people are cool, some people are dicks, some are opinionated, some are snarky, some are insightful, some are long-winded like me, etc etc...
I tend toward threads like these where people can take jokes and jabs without getting bent out of shape, and the discussion is still centered around the thread-title. Things meander a bit, but folks always seem to be mindful of the guideposts. I think the "Dadrock" crew you're talking about is not at all the majority of TB. It's just that the most opinionated and self-centered people tend to be the most outspoken.
The thing I like about this thread is that it will jump from jive-talk to gear recommendations to album reviews all in a day's work. It's a good variety and everyone seems pretty open-minded.
True. But there's a prevailing viewpoint for many many posters to TB, imho, and that is the "professional bassist", working the cover band, wedding band, corporate gig areas. Like for example a common refrain is the Band Leader's way or the highway. I've done originals bands only, I've never had a 'band leader', or certainly not in the way one is spoken of here, so that whole line of thinking is alien.
Theres definitely the usual (to any gear/hobby online forum) championing of certain rigs, basses, et al. Those tend to run counterintuitive to what we here need/want/use. Theres always groupthink going on. Its the internet.
So, in short, I find a huge chunk of TB and its posters to be irrelevent compared to this thread.

I love pickup covers, I know they're technically useless and generally considered a nuisance but I love the look and it totally stems from the first time I watched "Live at Pompeii."
I should buy one for my Blacktop Jazz and see if it covers the neck pickup and doesn't look like crap. A little doublesided tape should hold it for a week or two.

thanks. it's the least "polished" of the new material. really focusing on writting this summer so we can hit the studio before the end of the year for album #5!
Im a sucker for them too. John paul jones is at fault for me. I think theyd look good on my JPJ-esque jazz (sunburst/tort)

I have no interest in note for note covers or taking requests.
The collaborative writing process focused on serving The Riff is my primary goal in music. Seems to be more folks here of that mindset.
I've been in bands with a primary songwriter and have learned a great deal about music theory and arrangements, but it's not a generally very interesting or transcendent experience.
Seems like in this thread people are willing to fly their freak flag musically. Whether it's using heavy old "inefficient" equipment, or a 30min jam that " sounds like Black Sabbath vol. 4. "
Being different is OK here, seems like amongst the majority of TB the hive mind rules. Can't stand the missionary position sort of advice that gets splashed around elsewhere.
Plus, HIGH VOLUME doesn't have to be bad, it also doesn't mean you have no talent or the music sucks.
Love this place.

I normally hate tort, but if someone goes for the full pickup covers on a sunburst/tort jazz, I have to give some props for completing the look.
Agreed. The kind of living juke box cover band that most TBers seem to be in would bore me out of my mind. I like when an original song comes together. My bands aren't about dancing. No band I would see really is.
It's amazing how many TBers seem to be unaware of ear plugs, as well. Because we play loud, we MUST be going deaf... cause they were idiots and that's what they did.
