I would argue “metal” is the most diverse of any genre (or at least as diverse as any genre). It incorporates influences from literally every other musical genre. Typically, when people say they don’t get/like metal, they have a narrow viewpoint of what metal is. Often, they dislike the “extreme” stuff. On the other end of the spectrum, I love the “hardcore metal” guys who listen to exclusively “underground” metal bands like 5FDP, DevilDriver, Lamb of God, and the like, and have no concept of the vast majority of metal out there.
On the whole, though, I’d say we’re a pretty cohesive group, in that we pretty much let people enjoy what they enjoy and just go with it. You like your style, I like mine.
I also love the people that say it takes no talent. An old buddy of mine had that argument with his mother once, regarding Arch Enemy and their female singer. She was of the opinion anyone could do it, and so he challenged her to sing a song of theirs. She declined.
