Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I do have a meet and greet with a guitar player on thursday, but yeah, been a pain to find peeps in Detroit. Still no hits from drummers....

@kleinenenten, I am with you on the kids. Collectively, my band survived two marriages, career changes, college, three births, raising another kid from diapers to middle school, several home moves, and three big breakups/divorces. Life happens and it's great, but they really impede a band's momentum. When we decided to take some time time off for other projects, I was the only person who didn't have something else going on.

Everyone's project is rad though: The drummer is in a awesome blackened sludge band called Glacial Tomb (w/ Ben from Khemmis on guitarand the bassist, Connor, who use to sing for Abigail Williams), one guitarist is playing bass in Fathers (post metal), and the the other guitarist is playing bass in a power violence band called Limbwrecker.

The bummer is I lost some momentum. The kicker is I know that by the time I start playing out with my new projects, my old band will want to book shows again. It'll all work out though.

Don't let it go too long. You could end up having a hard time getting back in.
Do something even if it isn't ideal.
My last band was a few years ago in another state it's been hell trying to get something new started but it'll work itself out eventually.

Wow that really sounds like fearmongering.

Nevermind Doom on.

@mbelue, I’m of the same mindset. I have two projects I’m starting up. One is collaborative trio, the other is more my own brain child that I am writing for now. It’s turning out to be post metalish w/ some electric elements... kind of ISIS meets Jesu with some other stuff thrown on there... maybe some mild bass pyrotechnics, like a very lite Bell Witch stuff that will probably sound more like Pete Wentz to everyone else.

My bands been on hiatus for awhile now. We got rid of our old guitarist and its been terrible finding a new one. weve tried out several and none have stuck even though we really liked a couple. So bad infact i picked up guitar and started trying to teach my brother bass. We will be in a totally different place when we come back out though. Hopefully for the better.

It takes a lot of luck to find the right project. my rule of thumb is make sure I like the people. If i like their playing, its a bonus, but being able to get along makes the project fun, and if its not fun, its probably not going to be successful or satisfying. Players can change, improve, and adapt, personalities are much less flexible.
I got lucky; my project started over a beer almost 5 years ago. I was a pretty abysmal bass player at the time, comparatively, but the guitar player and I got along great so we stuck together until we were able to bring a couple more friends into the fold. Few albums recorded now and a significant amount of touring, and we still like each other ;)

I'm not doing squat right now. Just messing with recording stuff, seeing if I can keep myself entertained until I feel like looking for a band again. The stoner\doom scene where I live is a rubbish, and the slog to find a band is depressing.
If anyone is looking for a bass player in Los Angeles, let me know.

Hey guys, haven't posted here quite a while.
My band is in shambles too. The three of us haven't had a proper practice since December last year. The guitarist has a nine months old daughter, so he's either busy or dead tired or both. The drummer still has issues with himself, even though his girlfriend encourages him to go out and play with us. Go figure.
I got married in June and (strangely enough) my wife supports my passion for making horrible noises with basses and guitars.
Her sister's fiance is a guitarist and he recently approached me with an offer to start playing together. He's more of a modern shredder (plays an 8-string Shecter), but listens to doom and black metal, so here's hoping.
Also, out of boredom, I bought an audio interface and started making music on my own, so if you guys are curious, here's a link: Invalid Link Removed

Monolord last night were great. Neither the guitarist or the bassist played their Boult sig models. Bassist had a sweet Dunable in a p/j config thru an orange ob1-500 (or 300) and orange 8x10. Had a great sounding phaser and bass wah but i was way too far back to sneak a peek at the pedal board.

There's doomcharts.com as well. They do a top 20 every month of recent albums. They strive to be a 'metacritic' of doom/stoner blogd. Can be hit or miss, but I've found some cool stuff via them. They do favor the stoner rock side of things and not so much the sludgier side of the genre though...

Looks like it was awesome...I couldn't make it, but yeah we gotta meet up. I've been on seconds this month, can't wait to go back to first shift.

That seems like how most bands fizzle for a time. That was the catalyst for ours, but we're finally getting back together.

Not any specific doom/stoner ones, but I love a lot of the bands that KEXP have. They've done a few heavy psych and stoner bands, but they keep introducing me to killer bands like Ceramic Dog. Sick punk jazzy heavy band. Catchy as hell too imo.
