Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Either I'm getting old or just living under my rock again, but what's the deal with reverb on bass?

That's generally my thoughts on it, but it seems like when I hunt around boards for guys who play this stuff in other places always seem to include reverbs and delays, which to me would serve only to make it muddy and undefined, but I'm willing to acknowledge I'm just out of touch.

Part of it, I feel, probably just has to do with a desire to have a giant board o' pedals, or the hivemind tendencies to have it because others do too, instagram showoff nonsense, Internet points, etc...but now I sound like the old man that I am and I'm trying to open my perception.

Also, part of me does see how in certain contexts of sounding "big" a reverb might be a feasible option I've discounted too hard. Hence, I'm here looking for active practitioners and not TB Prime where hivemind reigns supreme.

Id say a good digital delay you dont have to worry too much about mud as they are very fidelic. If you dont feed them mud they dont output mud. Ive always used delay in quiet parts of songs where i want a wash of sound underneath Or at very very loud noisy parts where i want a roaring wash of noise. I wouldnt say ive ever used delay per the edge in u2 with bouncing repeats. More like a flood than drops of notes.

I use the lightest amount of reverb just to sound a little bigger. I think “room” on the MS60. I put it on the end most of my patches.

But I do play round with the delay a little. A chours with the cathedral reverb is a fun sound. Perhaps a good counterpoint to some doom.

Reverbs and deplays seem like they would be fun, but I can't figure out a place to use them. There aren't a lot of places where my bass is soloed or the songs are quiet enough to use one. In loud sections, guitars and drums tend to mask modulation.
I have a EHX Electric Mistress that blends Flange and Chorus, which seems to meet all of my needs.

I've never used an analog delay but I have used digital delay to make distortion stand out and sound more guitarish.
A single repeat at a very short time like 1-10ms makes single note runs sound more like a guitar solo.

Reverb + Chorus for sustained double stops is the only time I use reverb. That was on 1 song a long time ago.

Realistically, all I NEED is dirt. But I like the envelope filter too much. I could easily get rid of my delay and reverb, but I don’t have a reason to as I still have space for them on the board.

And other pedals are useful and would make the cut too. If I had to do barebones, I’d have dirt, comp, gate, and an HPF for safety. Envelope filter would be next. Delay, flanger, and chorus are on my board, but rarely get used.

I've rarely used reverb, but much more so lately. With bass I've found that it's best in sections where the mix isn't busy to begin with.

I tend to use it more as an effect akin to wah or delay not as a foundation. Someone else mentioned the same. Most mixes seem to be too busy to use it like Edge, but I've seen it and like it when done well.

I run an overdrive, fuzz, phaser, tuner. I've had a delay but rarely used it, so I flipped it. Same with this quirky ibanez bass synth pedal I had. Fun but useless. Lol

I've played model Js on a bass that had them hardwired to series mode. I really like the sound. I'm planning on getting a set for my J.

Also, I can't resist the urge to share more bands I dig that I think you guys/gals would enjoy:

Sooooo do you want a VR drum machine, or a drum machine with a fleshlight?
Well, I'm happily married, so I have one of those covered.
Its the playing that sucks. I can kill time writing stuff on my own and recording it, but we all know that isn't the same as playing in room with some people, making a ruckus. So much of music is about bouncing ideas and energy off other people.
I've been trying for months to find a band. CL and BandMix have completely let me down. It is depressing that there is no one within an hour's driving distance that wants to do anything mildly interesting to me.

Yeah I agree completely. Seems like my part of the world has so manypunk derivatives(which I've tried but can't get into). So little of the heavy blues, not to mention anything Southern(no surprise there living in the Pasific NW.)
I've gone the programmed percussion route before and its just soulless. I might write a song or two but become disillusioned fast and just stop.
I know a lot of musicians that can sit down with a multitrack recorder and just have hours of fun but I get tired of listening to myself masturbate.
I look at music as a series of problems. My solutions to my problems are always the same. I either need some one else's problems or someone else's solutions. Its in the reaction to other people that I believe the magic of music comes from.
