Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

My band avoided the exploitive stuff too, same reason as @bassboysam. Never saw a reason for it and don't care.

@oZZma always felt the same way about all girl bands for the sake of it. Pointless gimmick IMO. Get the players that fit best, who cares how they look/gender.

Although I always thought it was interesting how you often see all girls and a guy drumming or vice versa. Coincidence?

Back from the practice room. I had time to put together the Super Fuzz Kit. Holy copulation. It's an evil evil fuzz. A huge amount of gain/volume to the point unity gain is at approximately 1 on the vol knob. The tone knob version was a good move. So many good points in between the original's two positions.

It is simply put, Electric Wizard circa Dopethrone in a can. Jus's secret weapon fuzz was the Boss Hyper Fuzz, which afaik is a modded Super Fuzz circuit (it has a lot more control options). Theres a subtle upper octave that thickens and gives it fullness and a certain amount of chaos. No bass suckage, though at high volume/gain the bass gets really loose and potentially farty. The muff has a tighter, fuller low end, but this thing just sounds huge and snarly. I love the poopie out of it.

I also got to dabble in bi-amping. Playing at a guitar speaker safe level, I hooked up my JT100 to a marshall 1960A 4x12. Threw the 800RB in biamp mode witb a fairly low crossover. GK by itself sounded like reggae/dub sub bass. JT ran with bass off and mids and treble up high. Didn't need a heck of a lot of volume from the JT. The GK did most of the heavy lifting. I have a new gear goal. Haha

I am going to need a dedicated ABY box though. The big muff only adds in the dirty side when a pedal is active. So hows it sound? Heavenly and worth it imho. Its nothong like a clean blend on a pedal. With fuzz, it is one unified sound, with the tightest booming lows and the wild fuzz at the same time. Highly recommended for fuzz lovers.

My biamping experience is different than most. I almost exclusively sent an octave up only to a guitar amp. Granted I did for the majority of a song or two send the full bass signal to it, a 15w vox with a greenback. Took it surprisingly well, although I know I was pushing the speaker hard and limited use in that way. IIRC the driver was 25w and 16ohm, not sure if that helped it handle. Sounded great real raggedy and gritty but not farting out.

But if for shows you're trying to avoid an extra trip or need room in your ride, I've heard of taking a stereo cabinet and putting an amp into each channel.

May be able to rig up your 4x12 to do such a thing if the speakers can handle the power.

Such a great sound eitherway though! The ABY I use is the std Morley/livewire/China unit. Cheap and works well. Never had an issue with phase or bleeding and I have pedals before and after. Phasing may not be an issue though since it's different octaves being sent.

More HM-2 talk:
Got an Arion Metal Master. Definitely an HM-2 clone. It’s definitely got fuller lows, and has already displaced the original as my preferred HM-2 on bass for this reason. It seems slightly less harsh as well, which is a bonus for me, as I typically deviate from the “everything on 11” usage by reducing treble just a smidge. It’s also significantly louder than my MIT HM-2s. Haven’t tried the “stereo” function yet, though I hear it can also be used on “soft mode” for less harsh tones. I’ll probably try it, but as I don’t really want that, I doubt I’ll use it.

Basically, more bass, slightly less treble, LOUDER. WIN.

Update: Tried “soft mode”, which I did enjoy a bit. While the “soft mode” is pretty good, I prefer the standard tone. The “direct mode” is basically for tracking in the studio or bi-amping, as when that is engaged, the pedal doesn’t do anything to the sound whether or not the pedal is on. Could be cool if you need that. Also an interesting idea to bi-amp on “soft mode” to have 2 flavors of HM-2 simultaneously.

Anyway, cool enough pedal that I just searched and found another one cheap and scooped it up. My favorite HM-2 on bass by far. Even better than the LHW, which is almost 6x the price.

I almost drunk bought one of those Arion's after reading your post. Still kinda interested, after watching a few youtubes on them. I have these in my collection, so honestly should I bother?

I used to do something like this with 4-15s through a 1k watt pre/power setup and a peavey standard through a matching 6-10”. If you have the space in the van, I recommend it.

I’m currently going down the path of five strings. Two things I never thought I’d say, getting a schecter, getting a five string. It still feels weird. Oh, and it’s the first active bass since I ditched the Warwick.

Got a new tuning, new project, and new bass coming. Got rid of the 4/15” beast and working on designs for 2-2/15” cabs. Also going to have my guitarist laser etch my new leather strap. He just did cassette boxes for Oryx and they turned out gorgeous.

Lastly, still using the Hilbish. What a powerhouse of a head. The 700 watts does not feel neutered like the Peavey Minimega or even the Crown 1k power amp. I felt like those amps ran out of juice too quickly. How much money do you think the first run Hilbish amps will be worth?

It does but the guy through in the adapter so you can use a normal 9V power supply.

Have you ever A/B'd that Hilbish with a Sunn Beta Bass/Lead? Is it a direct clone of the original or updated/improved upon other than class D/more watts? Though the original 100w amps always seemed underrated for how loud they were. I got rid of my Sunn Beta Basses (I had 2) because it was a little weak in the low end, even with the low EQ dimed.

Band is still in suspended animation, but we're messing around with recording new stuff, so I'm back to playing the drums and bass. Got my money back from Boult after they ghosted on everybody over the holidays. Found a deal on a Gibson RD with the later/better preamp controls, so I'm liquidating a few redundant things. And this Black Widow rescue bass got it's pickup rewound and a fret job:
