Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I switched over to the smooth styling of TalkBass after dark. Easier on my eyes.

This last weekend marked the end of a two week sprint of no time off with my time off. Week of work, Disneyland weekend, week of work and stuff after work every day, then a Saturday at a family party out of town, where it was 102F. Actually got to hang out with a friend and get brunch yesterday.

We got to soundcheck before the show. No one was really paying attention, when it was my turn I turned on the Dunwich VT. Almost instantly people's heads turned to the stage to check it out. First time I use the VT at full gig/practice volume, it was pretty freakin rad. Got lots of questions about it.

Soundcheck went well, then it was time to play something happened on stage. I could not hear anything anymore. It was just a muddy mess. Apparently it sounded good out front but I hate those shows when you just spend it worrying about what the crowd is hearing because all I could hear was a big boomy kick drum.

Switch to the Dark side as well.

So you rolled out to the Valley? It was hot this weekend. Saved a bundal not turning on the AC and pissing off the future Ex Wife.

Yeah, it was in Turlock. They weren't running the AC either, which was criminal to me. I spent 90% of the time in the back yard, which was the same temperature as inside but at least the air moved slightly. It only gets 80F a couple weeks a year combined here usually, so it's not worth having AC. If I lived in the central valley though, I'd revise the budget and make it work. If it was that hot and someone was keeping me from turning the AC off, divorce would be the nicest possible outcome.

Trust me this is just the tip of the iceberg. I just turned it on so my daughter and I can have some peace tonight.

My house was built in 1949. The central air retrofitted in 1973. I have replaced condensor and air handler motors plus several other components to keep this thing alive... It's not efficient scenario. Until I have clarification that I'm keeping this house I'm not dumping a bundle into it.

I remember jamming with a dude who was a lot like this guy. I responded to his ad where he said he was playing guitar. He seemed like he had a solid idea of what he wanted and he seemed really well spoken so I thought "Why not?" and subsequently met up with champo for a jam.

It took a grand total of two minutes into the jam to realise that champo actually didn't know how to play the guitar...nor did he have the right gear for what he wanted to achieve. He wanted to play music in the vein of Isis and Cult of Luna with a Squier Affinity Strat, a 15w Vox prac amp and a Boss distortion pedal. And there I was with a 350 watt head and two 410 cabs ready to bring the heavy.

Long story short, the band never took off for obvious reasons but he ended up becoming one of my closest mates just because our personalities clicked.

Hey Stoner dudes! It's been quite a while since I've been around these parts so most of you probably don't remember me. Some of you are subscribed to me on soundcloud though. My 2 piece band LUMA just dropped a demo that I think you guys would dig. 30 mins of ethereal and trippy bass and drums. Pretty good stuff for a nice smoke session. Chill in spots but heavy in others. Pretty damn stoked for this project. Not many fans of this kind of stuff in my neck of the woods unfortunately. Let me know what you guys think! Youtube or soundcloud links whatever you prefer. We also have a facebook page if you end up digging it and want to give it a like. Link is in my sig.
