Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

All of that really just comes back to the fact that Black Sabbath started as a blues band and worked that minor pentatonic scale as hard as they could. It is very listenable for the audience, easy to jam on for a band, and sits really well from 75bpm to 140bpm. Its a goldmine. Which also means a little abused.
Now it sounds "dated" because bands like Priest took all the blues elements out when they switched to NWOBHM. If you use it, you can't help but sound like a 70s rock band; and if there is something I've learned from TB it is that you will never go broke playing something that feel familiar or plays on 70s nostalgia.
I just take it for what it is and pick the ones I like the most. Sometimes being SO steeped in 70s worship gets old, so I avoid the ones that are just too much.

At this point I honestly don't think there is a lot of uncharted territory left for rock and its sub genres. It has been a while since I've heard a unique band that was doing something totally unique, but not so much so they that were just annoying AF.

I found Sleep, realized they were copying Black Sabbath in their own way; realized Sabbath was interpreting old Delta Blues artists, so I settled on listening to only Huddie Ledbetter and Robert Johnson.

I’m just messing around Sam. No disrespect. That’s just where my mind went when you mentioned original artists.

It is kind of funny to think that those guys were kind of the doom of their time. 32/20 Blues, Where Did You Sleep Last Night, et al, kind of set that tone for many different interpretations that were to follow.

Obviously it’s not without other music and non-musical influences and even inferences of other things in the personal interpretation, but the basis for those old blues and gospel artists that were playing before recording was ever available to them was definitely hardship, trouble, doom, etc...

yeah the minor pentatonic gets super old really quickly. there have bben a few bands that play all penratonic but it's not obvious until you sit down and try to learn it. then ir's like damn that's just another pentatonic riff.

I don’t think I mentioned it here, but I got two free ampeg 8-10 cabs from a new homey. Set them up with the old Peavey Alphabass pre/Carvin DCM 1000. So much power! So much volume.

My guitar player scored me a peavey TKO 65 for $30. Gotta go pick that up Thursday.

The bands kind of a hot mess now so now there are 2 Batushkas. Litourgiya was the first/only album before the Schism (lol.)

Dude its always just one thing after the next. I blew out both my 80s marshal cabs during recording and had to replace the speakers. The tubes in my loucks gave out. One of my studio monitors gave up and had to be replaced. Its feels like an uphill battle. Probably should just learn to turn the volume down on the whole band, but we like to get loud and wanted to record loud i guess.

When it rains, it pours! Can’t complain, had the bass for 15 years and never needed more than a setup. It also gave me a valid reason to try a Bartolini preamp, which I’ve wanted to do for years. And now it sounds absolutely amazing - far better than my other bass. May have to upgrade its pre as well.

As for the cab, I bought it used like 6 years ago and have never had issues either. Tweeters/crossovers go bad, so I can’t complain. It’s an easy and relatively inexpensive fix (assuming it IS the tweeter/l-pad).

It’s just annoying that all of this is happening one after the other, but thankfully I’m learning a lot and it’s summer so I have plenty of free time to diagnose and fix stuff. But that time is nearly out now!

Has anyone seen or tried this pedal out? It’s a green russian reissue with a bunch of new features. It’s got a mids section, blend, noise gate, and wicker alongside the standard controls. I’ve been pretty impressed with it so far, especially for the cost.

For sure. The pedal size is certainly a detriment but considering that it does the job of multiple pedals (green russian, big muff pi and other amenities), I’m willing to give up the board space. Definitely glad I moved on from the green russian to this, the added mids are great.

I’d really like to get another Muff variant, but with a blend control.

Kind of weird, but I started using my Hellbilly pedal and the Boss LS2 to blend in my clean signal. Has a beastly tone to it. Completely surprised me how good it sounds.
