Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I check in and throw some likes daily, but haven't been posting much...

Listening: Planning for Burial, Bell Witch, Sannhet, Boris, ISIS, Torche, Old Man Gloom, Helm Alee, The Cure, Can, Neil Young (Harvest Moon), James Brown

Amps: Ampeg V4 w/ master volume/white switches. I also ordered a black switch/no master V4 today.

Dirt: Darkglass Vintage Deluxe V2 (often on), Moog Minifooger Delay w/ gain knob turned up, Fuzzrocious Rat Tail, Fuzzrocious Man the Ramparts

That said, I'm reaching for dirt pedals less and less in favor of a driven tube amp sound. I suppose that's part of my current V4 obsession, I can drive it to distortion w/ less neighbor complaints.

My newest trio, Jupiter AM, was gearing up for our first show and then got a message that the bar is closing for a month because they sold to an undercover :bored:. It'll be my first time singing.

I'm looking for an EQ pedal, the MXR seems good and has a good price but the fact that it's 18 volts is a little annoying :(

I had the fortune to have disposable income, no real need, and all the time in the world so I waited to find a good deal on everything. I had an unused 18v output from one of those pedal power supplies, so the 18v wasn't a problem.

I understand the new, chrome, model is true bypass, if that's important to you.

I want a DOD 250 so bad!!! I have been looking out for a deal on one. So bummed that I missed when they were blowing them out for like $30 bucks. I have thought about building a clone with the bass mods. Do you notice any low end loss at all?

Do y’all have any recordings yet? Let us CO folks know when you have another date booked. Looks like my band may have found a singer. We will have to link up! I have the V4B RI. I would love to own a vintage one at some point.

I’d really like to get a Rat style pedal, but I have no clue which to start with. Lol

FWIW, I really dig my Fuzzrocious Rat Tail, which they now called a Cat Tail.

That's rad about your potential singer! Hit us up to open when y'all are ready to gig! No recordings yet We'd like to do a demo, but don't want to spend to much. We are hoping to find a friend with a computer to get a few songs ready. If you know of anyone...

Love the V4B, wish I could spare the cash for one.

I picked a few 250's up back in '14/15 for $50e at a SDOTD from musicians friend. Well before they went for that low. Love mine, works well for what I want with bass and guitar. Gets fuller and more low end the more it's opened up. I think it's one of the better all around OD to distortion pedals out there if you like simple. Even gets a bit into fuzz territory with both knobs cranked.

Some say Blower Box, others say volt thrower, finally, you got the cat/rat tail. Any would be a fine choice.
And still others say Iron Pig! I’ve had all of those mentioned except the Rat/Cat Tail, and in my opinion, the Iron Pig is the absolute best.

As far as the DOD 250 goes, it’s a pretty great set it and forget it pedal. The simplicity is amazing. I’ve had a few off and on. Currently one is living on my multi-purpose guitar/bass board. It’s a pretty good pedal for what it is, but there are better options out there. That being said, it’s a capable little box that can get the job done. No reason not to own one of you can find one cheap.

From the sound of it, I guess I need to just start with one and go from there on the Rat pedals.

I know the Hellbilly is not a common pedal at all and especially not for bass, but if you are so inclined, here is a demo video of it. Granted, it’s on guitar, but at least you can hear the gain structure.

I got both of mine after haunting the used section of the Guitar Center website. They typically list around $800, but with a little patience, I scored both for around $500. For better or worse, the 6-months/no financing is helpful. I initially got a V4 bc I had an SVT-CL that was too loud for basement jams. It turns out the V4 is way more my sound and sold the SVT.

Apparently with an old V4, there is a weird preamp tube that is expensive to replace (it's like a double 12ax7). They also need a "death cap" removed, and have a new grounded power cord added.

A curious cab reflection- I don't think the V4 would be loud enough for me with an Ampeg 810. When I was using 810's, which I love the tone of, I had to dime my Sunn 300T. When I switched to way more efficient Mesa Diesel 215s, my volume was bordering on too loud at noon. At the time, I was playing with two guitarists using Peavey 6505 full stacks.

this is pretty cool if you like jazzier stuff

Hells yeah, I'm a big Bill Laswell fan! He's all over the map, from avant grade metal w/ Praxis and Painkiller, to dub stuff, to the world/drum and bass thing. I caught him a few years ago w/ Buckethead. There were at least 10 musicians who would play in different configurations and he would lead everything. The show touched had a bit of everything. He had a weird release in 2000 called Operazone where people were reporting it lead them into a trance, including Beck. He claimed he listened to on repeat in his car and spend the entire night driving around sober without any memory of what happened.

In the world of dirt, I've still been using the Antichton, the RFSSF, and The German for that, depending on how hard I can run the SB300. If I can turn it up above 4, I don't really want anything besides The German. If I'm kept to a cleaner sound without the pedal, I'll hit the RFSSF. I really need to add the TK421, but I just haven't taken the time yet.

In the world of RATs, I've just finished my demo of the Mystery Effect of the Month Club #4 - Redᴙum. It's a RAT circuit into a maxed out HM2 tone stack. Quite nasty, almost too much when all the way up, and a little thin on bass. But, the TK421 works pretty well on it, so it still might make it on the board.

You know, I love HM-2 and all, but what’s with all the cloning of the tone stack lately? Seems odd to me, even knowing that the tone stack is often the defining characteristic of the “chainsaw” sound.

Y'know, I'm not actually sure. I can't really say I'm crazy about the actual HM-2 myself. I've never owned one, but I know I've fooled with more than one at shops over the years, and heard it on record. I don't really get the love for it's sound. But this pedal does sound nastier than I recall a RAT or an HM-2 ever sounding.

Thanks for the info. I just want a super simple OD that doesn't radically change my amps natural tone / EQ curve. I love my tone with my V4B but just want something to give me some more breakup w/o extra knobs. I am currently using my Bi-Fet Boost but just want more grit w/o all of the volume.
