Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

LEAST STONER/DOOM CONVERSATION EVER.

I bought 8 fuzz pedals today so I can run them in series and I just replaced my .105 E string with a .350 for drop Q. Should sound great out of my new practice/small venue setup.

The only time I torture myself in the interest of health these days is when I mow the lawn. My mower doesn't have an engine, and Texas really doesn't have much of a fall, spring or winter, so my weekends involve 3-4 hours of my existence completely sucking for nine months out of the year. I kind of like it that way. Now that I think about it, it seems like pretty masochistic behavior.

Well, that and when I try to learn to play drums. You sure can't call that music.

In the world of noisy musics, Kim Gordon released a new video yesterday. It ain't stoner by a long shot, but I like it a lot, mostly for the noisy guitar.


In the world of less noisy musics, Daniel Johnston doesn't walk the earth anymore. I don't like that at all. But I might as well be angry at the sun for setting, it'll do the same amount of good.

In the world of wayyy more noisy musics. Lightning Bolt is set to release a record on Oct 11th. The preorders for vinyl were sold out by the time I heard about it, so I'll be looking for a hard copy of that one. I've been listening to this prerelease track for about a month. Lighting Bolt is a band I've always got to digest before I decide I like something or not. I'm pretty in love with this one. I don't know how stoner it is, but I like to smoke a lot of weed while listening to them.

Do you ever have that “ah hah, I'm a dumbass” moment over something totally simple? I have played Sadowsky Blue Nickel wound rounds for years and years now. I love them because they have such a gradual decline in their brightness and still sound great when dead. I was having the hardest time getting my V4B to break up even with the gain and mids maxed. I started doing tons of research on preamp tubes and thinking about everything under the sun besides strings. Changed my strings out of pure boredom the other day and plugged into my amp and BAM! great sounding breakup. I need to be changing my strings a lot more often in this band. The dead thumpy strings sounded great in the last band I was in but definitely not this one. Sometimes it is the simplest things that make the biggest difference.

Exactly, and the guys in Monolord are pretty fit, we should ask them what they do for exercise. A lot of their promo photos seem to be in the woods maybe they also do trail running. Or will they be like CRUSHING RIFFS CRUSHING LIFTS BRO and be deadlifting 3-4x their body weights.

In non-aerobic news, my band may have its first show next week, waiting on a confirmation from the venue. The gig won't be that great, but we need to get on a stage soon.

Good luck! First shows with a new project are always really interesting especially if its with people you haven't played out with before. Will someone get too nervous, get too drunk, does everyone have awesome stage presence but one guy/gal, does nobody have good stage presence, who will forget to bring spare cables and a backup instrument, and the great mystery of will someone not help move equipment at the end of the show, and if so why it is always the singer?

Oh and one of the cooler local Chicago bands Snow Burial is releasing their next album on the 20th, the bassist has a pretty nice tone, particularly when he kicks in his distortion, not sure what amp/pedals he's using but he's got a pretty sweet 5 string Jazz bass.

Dude ive pulled that same move more times than i can count. I always let my strings go like a month too long and spend a month wondering why everything i used to love sucks now. Then ill change my strings in a whim and kick myself over it.

That's some "healthy" exercise I like.
Better than thai boxe to vent anger and sadness and frustration. It helped me a lot. I should get a teacher and learn seriosly instead of just noodling now and then.

Haha, I'm the singer so I guess I don't need to move my bass stack? Its a pretty last minute thing, so I'm not expecting much from the show. It should be a pretty low key to get out there and get some of that anxiety worked out. We are a 'power trio', i know I can get really into a performance. Will be interesting to see if the guitariat does too. He's fairly reserved in the practice room. Not worried though, except about me forgetting words.

Been playing golf and guitar lately, so haven't frequented the thread.
Feeling the pull of the low-end again recently.
No new gear, still no band, all else pretty much the same.
My wife bought a sweet new-to-us horse trailer, so Charley can now travel to shows.
I bought The Sword "Warp Riders" and it has become one of my top-5 albums of all time.

I wish some of y’all were closer to Western Kentucky. I’d love to get into a doom/stoner band. No one around here even knows Sleep, YOB, Monolord, or Elder. I’ve been wanting to get some kind of doom music going with drums and two basses, but alas, as a bass player here, it’s more like playing War Pigs with a guitar player that can barely keep time.

Edit: Warp Riders is probably my favorite album from the Sword before they started tuning up. I still love High Country though.

I’ve been wanting to get some kind of doom music going with drums and two basses, but alas, as a bass player here, it’s more like playing War Pigs with a guitar player that can barely keep time.

This is kind of similar to my situation... In the end I found another bass player with similar taste (more or less) and he basically learned to play drums while we started this band together. But I'm beginner so playing with another beginner for me is surely less frustrating than for you

Even though this genres growing in popularity its still super hard to find people who understand what youre trying to do. I ended up playing guitar because all the guitarists in our area want to do is wank. Its taking a long time but we are almost ready to do gigs again. If i ever finish recording vocals

Actually I don't play stoner/doom stuff, we are more like... I dunno. Math rock/no wave with some metal? Not sure actually. I'd like to share something here and ask for suggestions because when the moment will come to put our stuff on bandcamp I wouldn't be sure what tags should I use for it. I'm not good enough to start with a definite idea and the output is quite out of control, due to inexperience, different approach between me and my bandmate and poor technique.

Hell, it was really hard here [Detroit MI area] too. I've been playing with the guitarist for about a year, the drummer 6 months or so. We went thru lots of wackos. My dream band has always been a 3 piece, so I said screw it and figured out how to sing decent enough.

The meld of guitars and bass on that album are damn near perfect to my ear. Lots of good mid-grunt from the Oranges, and the one-knob Crunchmaster. Lots of cool little guitar tidbits the come to the surface with multiple litenings. I've probably listened to it over 100 times now. Still not sure what 90% of the lyrics are, lol.
