Wow. Played bass for about 10 minutes and my hands, wrists, and forearms are barking at me! Soooooo out of shape for playing. Fortunately, I have a nice Malbec to see me through.
Warp Riders and Age of Winters are the sword's best stuff totally. I actually really like used future too but its not really a heavy album.
These guys sound quite a bit like the sword in parts, especially that intro straight off age of winters, might be your guys speed. Pretty sweet live band the 2x I've seen them, sound exactly like the recordings live.
Sleep was good. 5 string Ric sounded better thant 4 string AC signature to me.
Boris though, that was life altering. those guys know how to write a song and put on a show. that's the closest I will get to Live at Pompeii.

in other show news I'm dragging the wife out to see Russian Circles for our 10yr, super stoked to see those dudes!
I really like Gods of the earth, even though I jokingly refer to it as "Cymbal fill: the album". I've got most of their stuff on CD but I'm not sure what happened to my copy of High Country though.
The Sword has a solid discography thus far, but I much prefer everything up until and including Apocryohon. After that, while being good albums and catchy in their own right, they seem to be slowly losing their heavy. I like heavy.
I’ve been delving into jazz for a while now. Just had the opportunity to see Lage and Frisell pop up out of nowhere. Looking for more, lol. To make sure I have an appropriate bass content. His bassist was amazing. Honestly, he’s was got me back on the bass track. Well, that and seeing Lage destroy any and all illusions I had of being a guitarist.
I really liked The Sword's first four. Those were some of the albums that got me into these genres. I've been so disappointed by their last 3. It is like Opeth for me as well. I really dug their stuff and then they make this left turn.

Saw The Sword 5 times. First was Apocryphon. I’ve really enjoyed their music before and after that, but after hearing Kyle’s solo work, it’s pretty evident who wrote the music and lyrics in near entirety. I did hear some of JD’s stuff on SoundCloud, or something, a month or two ago. It was very much like the last two Sword albums.

Yeah, I think the general consensus on the last few EW releases have been that they are whiffs. I don't think they made a dramatic turn anywhere, but they are just out of gas.
I'm going to respectfully disagree about Sleep. The Sciences are absolutely in the same vein as Dope Smoker, with a little bit of Holy Mountain's actual song writing. It is too short, and two tracks are old songs just finally recorded, but I don't feel like they went off brand anywhere.
I didn't like High Country very much but I find myself really liking Used Future for night driving home from bars/shows in the summer. Definitely not a winter album though, reminds me a lot of ZZ Top and 70s rock. I like how they establish a theme with that intro and they sneak it back in throughout the album in little bits in the songs its kind of cool conceptually.
The new Opeth to me is musically interesting but the songs are terribly boring. It's kind of like listening to jazz for me, you hear parts and you're like that's cool but nothing sticks with you and it isn't memorable as a complete work. Heritage especially to me basically sounds like a bunch of unrelated sections pasted into songs.
Taste is subjective everyone is going to like different stuff. I for one agree and find Electric Wizard unlistenable after the original rhythm section left. The songs just don't have the same feel.
I am bummed that the sword seems to be dead I never actually saw them live it didn't seem like they hit Chicago up that often. I also have a terrible decision to make later this month whether I should see King Buffalo at Empty Bottle (a 100 seat bar roughly) or Brant Bjork at Reggie's. Got YOB, Pallbearer, Bongripper, REZN the day before too. One crappy thing about Chicago is no one comes here in the winter and then everybody is here at the same time.
I've never been into late 70s Arena Rock, so the Sword's transition was just too weird for me. The riffs and the head banging just weren't there for me.
Opeth has always written complex music. Their presentation since Heritage has been an issue for me. If Mikal doesn't want to growl anymore, fine, I could live with that. However the songs lost their edge and the recordings got very retro sounding. I'm just not a straight up prog guy.
