Today was supposed to be a standard chore doing/errand running day. And it was. But, it turned into a real pleasing one letter in the afternoon.
I stopped in to see a friend of my cousin’s to drop off Warp Riders so he could give it a listen, and we ended up chatting for a good while. He plays guitar, and drums, lives about five minutes away from me, and has a jam spot set up in his basement, with all the goodies. I thought he was in a band, but, turns out that has died the standard slow death of apathy. So he invites me over to jam sometime.
He’s a good guy, and he digs the heavy. I’ve known him for years, and we get along great.
This could be the beginning of something really cool.

There was a gk 112 combo at a local store for years that I almost walked out with every time. Too bad I always had a practice amp and didn't need it. Probably perfect for just plugging through stuff and fiddling around.
Good talk on the "recent" directions of bands. That's gotta be a tough spot to be. On one hand you don't want to just release the same album over and over, but sometimes the progression is too quick for some fans or not in the right direction. As long as they're not just cashing it in, I'm okay with it.

You know, I’ve had similar discussions with friends before regarding bands changing styles. The gist for me has been this - I listen to TONS of different bands with all sorts of various styles. I’d rather a band have and keep a distinct style of their own, whatever that may be, than try and change drastically. I don’t want the same album over and over, but I do want it recognizable as “band x”. There’s just something nice about getting a new album and knowing what to expect, especially from a quality group. For me, a few bands that I absolutely love that fit this criteria are Sodom, Tankard, Iced Earth, and Blind Guardian, among others.
There are, of course, exceptions where I can’t really stand early stuff from one band but love some of their later albums (Carcass, At The Gates), but that’s usually due to absolutely terrible production. And sometimes I catch a band after their big style change and can’t go backwards to their early stuff.
I guess what I’m really saying is that with all the options I have for music, if I want a different style, I listen to a band that specializes in that specific style, not one who has dabbled here and there. We all likely have bands that we love, but still gravitate towards a handful of their albums. Like Sabbath - I doubt many people’s go-to Sabbath albums are Tyr or Born Again. Not necessarily bad albums, but there are better options for that style.

There's a lot to be said for fans expectations of a band and their sort of sound and general vibe. A lot of times there can be pretty meaningful evolution of sound and performance, as well as the production that goes into an album. But like if people don't like something then it might not work out as a standalone work of art.
As a musician I totally understand wanting to keep making cool isht with group to keep growing and evolving as artists together but sometimes that sound can get a little far removed from what people might want to hear.
..Like so much of the music industry is based around music as a commodity, esp in the more pop filled genres. Nashville is a good example of the singer and songwriter dynamic you see in country or in pop. Or like more pop-based heavy genres like deathcore and stuff. If that made sense, lmao.
The Sword is a great example of this, I loved low country for one but I can see how it was a DRAMATIC change in style for a lot of people. Newer Opeth as well, not only are the changes in tone and vocals and performance huge, it feels like there is less musicality in it overall. I love earlier stuff from both those groups but a lot of the newer stuff doesn't vibe quite as well.
Oh well! In other music news, I have a bunch of new music to learn for this new group I'm playing with. The drummer is a BEAST. Keeping up with the dumb 200+bpm blast beasts and 7str and 8str guitars has been an awesomely fun challenge so far.
So far its a kind of fun Meshuggah + jazzy breakdowns + weird djenty isht.

I have been digging hard on these guys. They're blending a number of styles within metal, but there are some definite doom moments scattered throughout. Just killer musicianship and it's all pretty brutal. Their drummer is a monster, too.
At the Wovenhand show right now. The opener, Jaye Jayle, is really cool. SVT and a P Bass, Hyper Fuzz.
Looking forward to seeing this lineup in Denver on Saturday! Jaye Jayle is great. Had the pleasure of touring with them for a couple weeks. Good dudes, bass player Todd has a great groove.
Keener was playing an Orange solid state of some sort. Orange 810, OCD, and Small Stone reissue (the smaller one). Might have been another pedal or two on there. I couldn’t see for sure. The bass was a Corrigan (spellcheck?).
@hardtop I agree! Super good grooves and excellent overall sound. Whatever song they do in 7/8 time where he’s doing a 1/2 step hammer on drone part was killer tonight. I’ll be ordering vinyl from them soon! Until then though,

Just ran a 50k in the Colorado mountains last weekend. It gets better the longer you stick with it.
My band, Solar Monolith, are playing our first show, saturday night 9/21 in the dreaded final slot [11:30pm] at Hot Rock Bar in Warren. Hopefully enough folks stick around to make it cool. Either way, I'm finally back out there!
I run two, actually. What’s your goal and current scenario? My go to is MXR. The Smart Gate is very simple and works quite well. Their Noise Clamp is basically the same thing, but with a loop attached an an option to have the switch engage/disengage the whole pedal including loop or just the gating with the loop always on.
I hate excess noise and hiss, so I have a Smart Gate before my drive pedals to kill any of their signal before noise is a new issue and a Noise Clamp first and last (due to the loop) in the FX loop of my amp. It keeps any extra preamp noise to a minimum. I can crank pretty much anything as loud as I want and have a noise free rig with this setup.
There are obviously other gates, but these are the simplest and among the best. The Boss NS-2 is also solid, but I prefer the simplicity of the MXRs.
Rad, thanks for the replay. Some of the goals right now are to, well, keep it from turning into a mess of feedback, so I might try sticking one in the effects loop of my amp. I don't have an issue _right now_ but I'm keeping up with a couple of super high gain extended range guitars and well, I want to get back to stacking some OD into my X which has been a kind of challenge to tame at higher volume.
I'll take a look at the MXR!
I've been pretty lucky that I don't have a ton of hiss and noise, but just a bit of feedback. Granted I'm pretty much running one drive pedal into a pre-amp and a compressor so it isn't as messy as some of y'alls setups...
What do you use to catalogue your records collection (if you do)? RateYourMusic? Discogs? Both? Other?
