Some of our suggestions during mixing were met with a "really? you want to do that?!" :) We also only recorded the drums live this time with guitars and bass being tracked seprately after compared to everything live (except overdubs) on the last two. So there is still a bit of a live feel but it also more polished than before.

What sort of weird suggestions did you make?

But it's to get more overdrive. I play a relatively low power head with an overdrive feature for precisely that reason. Hiwatt and Reeves 400s are cool, but they wouldn't do what I want them to do while matching the volume of the rest of the band.

Exactly. The recommendation for a lower power head serves a higher purpose.


Also, you guys should check out Godhunter and Secrets of the Sky if you haven't already. We played with them on monday night, and they're both pretty awesome. Was weird in that all the doom bands had six people at that show.

I really freaked out when I found out Casey Kasem did the voice for the original Shaggy.

That's how I roll too. My gig rig is Two Peavey Firebass 700 heads into 4 115 ported Black Widow cabinets. Two cabs are clean and Two get the Rat King. My practice rig is a Peavey TNT 115 and a Peavey Basic 112. I eq all the lows out of the 112 and crank it.

mostly EQ suggestions, especially the drums and less so on the bass. Also on Mouthbreather we recorded a bunch of extra drum tracks and panned them to different sides, kind of inspired by the old Meters records where all the drums were either all on the left side or all on the right. we compressed the hell out of the toms on some of the drum tracks in that song too, which he thought was strange, but I think it works in the mix.

The kick and bass were mixed louder than he normally would mix them as well, just little things like that.

On Mountains we used a stylophone. we ran a clean DI and also mic'd it through a Fender champ. The mic'd signal was also run through an Earthquaker Organizer. on it's own it sounded pretty terrible but once we mixed it I think it added some nice atmosphere to an otherwise repetitive ending.


edit: oh and on Immortal Dwarf, if you listen near the end, we actually added some hand drums. very Santana like which for one of the more metal tracks on the album was kind of weird, but we thought it sounded pretty cool.

Starting new MONOBROW now.


The Festival Booster works amazing now that its fixed, pushes my EVM load 215 perfectly. Man that is a HUGE headcase, I'm running my 215 horizontal now so I can put the Festival on a cab. The VU meter is fun to watch. I'm down to running two cabs, and can crush everything even more. I think its mostly because of the efficiency of my of my speakers/cabs now. Both cabs have wheels so loading will be easy. Might add some extra handles to the 215 to make lifting it easier and move the wheels to the side.

Maannnn, being floored with gastro sucks. I haven't chucked up this hard and for this long since I was 13 and downed my first bag of casket wine. Horrid memories.

Been spinning Red Fang's "Whales and Leeches" a lot for some reason in my downtime. Great album. Don't know why I overlooked it so much when it first came out. Glad I revisited it.

Listening now. The stylophone in Mountains was rad. The extra drums in Mouthbreather reminded me of Neurosis a bit.

Was it the dirty whiskey and questionable kebabs?

Also I thought it was called the soggy bogs or something to that effect... All commonwealthy.
