Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

20200507_195105.jpg

Spruced up my corner of the space. Played the Peavey Standard for the first time in forever. Man it's so nasty. The preamp section would make such a great disto pedal. Too bad I'm electronics illiterate.

What poor amp setup is being tasked with reproducing that?
For normal practice I use a Fender Rumble 40. It has no chance whatsoever of handling that F# string. I'm not a fan of the Rumble 40, but it serves well enough as a practice amp that I am okay with keeping it in that role. More often than not I'm just plugging headphones into it these days anyway, but even in that role I'm not a fan of how it sounds.

I also have a GK MB Fusion 800 and Acme Low B-2. That setup can handle the F# string better, but the baked-in HPF of the GK take a little bit of fun out of things. My plan is to get another Low B-2, which will also probably mean getting a different amp setup. I'm in no hurry for that, though, because: (1) I suck and have no business playing in front of anyone else; and (2) there aren't really any opportunities to play for an audience these days anyway. I generally just plug in to the GK/Acme rig when I want to shake the walls, which it does nicely.

So, currently in the midst of poisoning myself with a heat gun and scraper taking the poly finish off the new SS. Front doesn't look bad, only a couple of small scorch marks. The "foto-flame" came off pretty easily. Now the back, that's a different cat. Lots harder to get up. Have about 15% more to go, then on to the sanding block and fine grit to just smooth it out enough to feel good. I plan on a tinted wipe-on finish to get it to a dark amber-to-brown kind of look.

Ummmm...you need to crop out everything left of the mic so I can look at the gear. #onlyhuman

Goddam! Every once in a while I'll read or participate in a another thread on talkbass.... and I generally want to kill myself afterwards. Its not that bass players are particularly stupid, its that most humans are... really...shagging....stupid. Doom until it brings doom, that's my philosophy.
I just leave every thread with a consumerist thirst for a new piece of gear, normalised by the forum as GAS.

Are you possibly referring to the black metal band names thread?

If so that's similar to my thoughts. While not offended and not a fan of black metal per say, I totally get how it could be to others. Interesting with how inflammatory it could be, but how unlikely a mod would be to close/edit/delete the thread. But you know it'd close quick if it was about blues, rock, cover bands, etc... especially with the premise of the thread. Feels kinda double standard, I didn't read the whole thread, but I guess as long as it stays civil it'll remain.

No complaints here, just an curious observation for me.

I venture a bit here and there, mostly the luthier's corner (similarly open minded people as here). But that's about the limit. I keep in mind what happened to Sartori/Korladis. IIRC he doesn't have fb either so I'm not sure if he's kept in touch with any of the veterans from here.

Not to say there isn't a lot of open minded people on TB or everywhere, but dang do you run into those who aren't way too often.
