Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Yeah, the Mark IV seems to be the one I'd favor as well. I had an old Mark II years ago, and liked it, but the curve knob didn't seem to do much for me. Having mids and bass knobs would help though. Did you know they just released a Mark V in August? I had no idea. It's got the curve control back, but the "freq" knob replaces the bass and mids knob whit a single knob tied to an internal selector as to whether or not it's bass or treble frequency. Think the Mark IV would suit me better.
Would anyone of you guys be interested in a thread for in-depth discussion about bands/records, only for "heavy" and non commercial genres? (ranging from stoner/doom to all the noisy and all the experimental and "avant" stuff)
The forum where I talked about music seems dead (at least temporarily) and I miss some serious discussion about music.
No suggestions, no charts, no crap/not crap fights... So frustrating!!
I'd be all for that, digging all the talk we have here! I barely have time to listen let alone explore now a days, so it's so nice that everyone throws stuff up. That and personal projects that people post about, which is bad ass. @rutrho only had time for the first track but it was awesome!

I've been wanting to try the plumes lately. I heard it runs brighter, which would help at times. I had the same idea, trying to get popular circuits for when they're needed. I'm glad I've kinda got a bit set aside for the revolving door of trying out new circuits. Really helps.
Yeah I totally lucked out with Craigslist on that one. It even came with the grilles.
Brighter? Probably not for me, then! If I want bright, I'll use one of my basses with rounds. Seriously, though, I also play guitar, so this pedal could likely do double duty, or replace one of my OCD clones possibly. Plenty of options if it doesn't work on bass (which sounds unlikely).
Though, now that I've spent the last week comparing the tones I prefer from my Pharaoh Supreme and Iron Pig, I'm realizing I do have them somewhat bright. Maybe articulate is the better term? Not as bassy as plenty of the videos I've seen, but enough to keep the lows and cut the mix. Whatever they are, I've found that the Russian Muff demos I've been listening to may not be "crunchy" enough on the high end, and I may just have to splurge for a Grey Stache, as it seems to be more vocal in the mid range and cut better. I know it's highly regarded, and one of the cheaper Muffs around. That or try a Swollen Pickle again. Anybody still use that one?

I wanted to write a brief introduction to make clear what the thread would be about, but maybe in the next few days... Today I started working again and it was so exhausting for multiple reasons, I can't even find the energy for this little task
But I'm happy many of you are interested!!
Colour Haze just announced that Philipp has left the band, and their longtime engineer Mario will take over on bass. I wonder if Mario will bring his own style to their music, or if he will play similar to Philipp. Philipp's style is very unique and interesting compared to most "stoner" bass players, so it's hard to imagine the band without him.
I caved and bought both the Swollen Pickle and Green Rhino. At least I got a good deal - $150 for both - instead of $125 for the Grey Stache solo. I know I liked them in the past, so here's to hoping a few years of experience later and better understandings of my tone and rig can help me dial them in better now!

In my head, the clean blend will do what I want for both a dirty boost and then all out war with the fuzz layered on. I'm just re-engineering my board and gain staging as working through new material. We'll see anyway as it's gonna be a while til I get to crank it in anger with my full rig.

Yeah I love the way his role in the band changes depending on the context. Sometimes he's playing along with Stefan's riffs, but a lot of the time he plays more like a rhythm guitarist, and there are plenty of moments in Colour Haze songs where he's playing a counterpoint to the main riff, or even taking center stage.
Since we're talking about him, what are some of the best Philipp Rasthofer riffs? I'd definitely pick "Aquamaria" and "Transformation."

I do need to get more acquainted with Colour Haze. Mountain's one of my favourite songs right now but I haven't listened to much else by them. Such a blast to jam along to.
Just received the replacement screws for my pickup and the Meatbox I ordered a while back. Gonna attach the screws later tonight. The Meatbox is filthy! Really what I'm looking for in a sub-octave.

- Deerhoof's Future Teenage Cave Artists really opened up the decade with the mindset I needed.
- Strong Reflection was the soundtrack to my first few months living on my own. One of few songs that has brought me to tears. It's so heavenly beautiful.
- King Gizzard, from which I listened to Infest the Rats' Nest, gave me an appreciation for what really good thrash can sound like, not to mention being a kind of outlet / sympathy for my own frustration regarding the world at large.
- Windhand's Dorthia Cottrell has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard and sets a goal for myself that I think is high, but somewhat realistic when it comes to voice training as part of my transition. Not that I expect to get her voice, but I do hope to attain that kind of voice at least.
- I've said it before and I'll say it again, Elephant Tree are really pushing the stoner rock genre. It's very welcome because it's a genre keen on staying static. Faceless and Broken Nails are my faves from Habits.
- Yawning Man is not what I'd have expected in that spot, but they (I) don't call me (myself) Yawning Jorin for nothing. Macedonian Lines is almost two years old but it still feels fresh and unique. I absolutely adore how the bass is blended with a piano in many places. I Make Weird Choices is one of the most expressive instrumental pieces I know.

I was underwhelmed with that ERR/Thou collaboration. It's not bad, it just didn't give me the fizz.

Sumac, Phoebe Bridgers and Hum were my fave records this year. Oh and the new Caspian record.
Elephant tree, pallbearer and bell witch/aerial ruin have been the three releases most on my rotation ... I haven't got Spotify so light on stats I'm afraid!
