Would anyone of you guys be interested in a thread for in-depth discussion about bands/records, only for "heavy" and non commercial genres? (ranging from stoner/doom to all the noisy and all the experimental and "avant" stuff)
The forum where I talked about music seems dead (at least temporarily) and I miss some serious discussion about music.
No suggestions, no charts, no crap/not crap fights... So frustrating!!

Alright - more muff talk. Currently, looking like the Grey Stache is what I want. Used, it's about the same price as a Russian Pickle, which was my front runner for mass-produced Muffs. So what options do I get on the Grey Stache? Are any more usable than others? I think the diodes would be most usable (I'll have to see which diodes, even!), and I see one with oscillation, but don't think I'll need that one... Anyway, thoughts? Experiences?

I've got a GGG muff kit I built to their "Deluge" specs, more or less. I put a 3 way switch in for the first pair of diodes with... something, 2N5457's - "stock" as per GGG Deluge, and none. None is cool - essentially turns it into a Colorsound Supa Tonebender. I remember I was going to do the "flat mids" mod when I assembled it, but discovered that it was already.

Never heard of that option. What's the Helio based on? Any clips of this Helio-stache?

It's something Ryan built as a one-off, then another; he'll make more for custom orders but doesn't seem to want to put it up on the site as an option. It's a Grey Stache with the tone stack from the Heliotropic. I love it, IMO the Heliotropic's tone stack has a lot more character than that of the Stache but the pedal itself is higher gain than I'd like. They sound awesome.

I joined a discord server through listening to one of my favorite noise bands, The Goslings. There’s a lot of general heavy music discussion in there if anybody’s interested. It’s called The Goslings Archive, the YouTube channel has the same name.

Sup y'all, its been a spell...

We got our album thingy finished up, finally. We also lost our singer, which was a bummer but oh well. I'm pretty much expecting to pick up vocals for the band going forward, but no idea how thatll work out. Also got my ****** up shoulder fixed, which is a good thing in-spite of being unable to play bass for a month.


Anyways, heres our stuff. Its kind of an eclectic mix but we have some cool songs in here.

Sounds super clean, where/how did you guys record?

We recorded at a friends studio here, did the drum tracks in a day, most of the bass was recorded at the same time, then a lot of tweaking of guitar parts.

Guitar was a strat into a triple rec + 112 cab for the first six, picc line was a V into a Dark Terror, then wash was a SG into the triple rec.
Bass was my GWB35 into my pedalboard,Darkglass X, TC spectradrive that was EQ, compression and boost, we recorded everything through DI then re-amped through a SVT/410.

Most of the damn lyrics were written/sung in the studio for the first time and we never really heard them unless we were there with our vocalist. Seeing as we'd been working on this for a year and only really had two songs with vocals we rehearsed with, it was not cool.

Good luck on your new endeavour! I've enjoyed the occasions I've sung while playing bass.

Thanks... Ive done some on our new stuff but my parts have been more atmospheric/effects based so far. so we'll see how it all starts coming together now.

Spent some time tweaking today, and got the Iron Pig sounding Muff-ish enough for my needs. Gonna put the hold on the Grey Stache for now...

In other gear news, the guitar I ordered via Postal Money Order should ship tomorrow. I'll have my "Stormtrooper" duo complete soon. Yes, I'll try and post pics - though, to put it as dorkily as possible - "I find your lack of faith disturbing."

There's also an RG7321 local to me for dirt cheap. I love those guitars, and it's tempting to get another for alternate tunings etc. That would put me at 5 each for basses and guitars, with the same amount of standard range and extended range to match tunings for simplicity's sake. I could take the cash from not purchasing a Muff and get this guitar...

working on bringing a road 440 head back to life. only two stumbling point is the inductor for the boost circuit has no information available so I'm trying out old organ pull inductors before figuring some other way to repurpose the switch to provide a boost

update since i can't edit: "boost" is a simple RL high pass filter so i found a handy online calculator and found an inductor from the bin that gives a corner frequency of 67hz so it chops off the super low end for an apparent boost of mids and highs. waiting to pickup some capacitor mounts for the new filter caps but i measured 455w output into a 4 ohm resistive load with the sine wave generated by my scope. thankfully my eminence 3015 cab is 8 ohms (amp output would be lower). will def doom lol

I have proposed a separate thread only to have more "continuity", we talk about so many other things here, it can get a bit messy/dispersive
BTW I just wanted to ask some recommendations...
I have been revisinting Isis' early records these days, Mosquito Control, the other early EPs and Celestial and guys… I'm missing that impact, the crushing beauty of some songs, the "not brainy/not too focused on technique" complexity, those devastating levels of angst and guts.
I'm not super informed about what's new so possibly there's some gem that I've missed. Is there anything that compares to that nowadays, not clones, but fresh and new and original stuff? What I had checked in recent post-hardcore was not even close. Maybe I should have been looking elsewhere, as a genre I mean.

Re chats and forums: I used to hang on a bass-focused Discord. Unfortunately one of the mods was transphobic and the admin didn't want to deal with it. A lot of the active LGBTQIA+ members left as a result, me included. It's a shame, I do miss some of the people I talked to there. TB has become my substitute, I suppose. Discussion certainly flows differently, especially in the dedicated forums, but this thread certainly has the same kind of casual chat feeling. It is quite wonderful <3

Good thing I didn't spring for the Grey Stache, looks like my guitar amp may need some work... The perils of owning gear nearly as old as you are! Should be a quick fix, just can't do it myself.

Also, I apologize to the collective, but I've been playing more guitar than bass lately. Lots more to improve on guitar than bass! (Though I'm clearly not a pro on either by any means...)

Some time ago I've installed this Chrome thingy that allows me to adjust volume on Bandcamp. Sooo useful. Here's a link: Bandcamp Volume
