Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

LOL all of this in Fort Worth? I was just up there for Thanksgiving. I was born up there and used to live off of Camp Bowie.
Hehehe yeah. I was surprised they were happening here. Fort Worth supports the arts pretty well, but it's still pretty conservative. She sees them hung in the area around Overton Park when she's walking down to the Trinity.
Man, I wanted to like the new Pallbearer, but the production... I just cant handle it. I know that is what they were going for, but it's just makes it difficult for me to get into. I appreciate they are evolving to some degree, but I'm just not feeling it. I really like the last song a lot.I'm genuinely surprised at how much I disagree with Bandcamp's best metal albums of 2020 list. Not that I'm saying my taste is right and theirs is wrong, but I'm just surprised at how different my taste is than theirs this year. Neither of us are right or wrong.
That said, they're dead wrong for not including the Pallbearer album
I feel the same with the Bandcamp and even Decibels year end lists. That said, not much "did it for me" this year. I do really like the Wayfarer album, or at least 3/4 of it. It's in my personal top 10 (in which there are 4 albums)
When I think about 2020 albums, and putting aside genre for the moment, for me Hum is at the top and then I have a tough time choosing what follows. Also 2020 was kind of a not-so-doom year for me. Even the Pallbearer album feels as much prog as it is doom. There are probably more death metal releases that appealed to me this year. I also enjoyed some of the weirder stuff like Neptunian Maximalism and -S-. That Wayfarer album is good but I don't like it quite as much as their previous album (that is a really high bar, though). I'm still bummed about the Eternal Champion album...I was really disappointed with that.
I haven't seen Decibel's list...I'll check it out.

Mastodon - Medium Rarities
Sepultura - Quadra
The Sword - Conquest of Kingdoms
Khemmis - More Songs About Death v1
Cloudkicker- Solitude
Pallbearer - Forgotten Days
No doubt many would balk at some on my list, but taken as an album and not history of the band, Sepultura for example, they are quality works. However much or little credit is due.

I love the Hum record. I think you might have turned me on to it actually. I was a fan back in the mid 90's. I used to see them all the time in Chicago.
I like about a 1/3 of the Eternal Champion album, and really don't care for the other 2/3's its weird but a couple songs rang true with me, as an album, it did not. Same with the new Spirit Adrift, I dug a few songs, but most of it was background music to me.
I liked the Sweven album a lot.
And Paradise Lost because it's basically sisters of mercy, who are one of my favorite bands.

this was definitely a big big year for American death metal releases. Necrot, Glorious Depravity, Of Feather and Bone, Defeated Sanity and Fluids stood out for me, but there were some real gems outside of that world.
Hum, Narrowhead and Metz all put out killer albums that all scratch a similar shoegaze itch. Hum is one of my favorite bands, but I honestly don’t find myself listening to the new album all that much. It’s not bad by any means, it just isnt growing on me in nearly the same way Astronaut and Downward did. Narrowhead is a Siamese Dream era Smashing Pumpkins clone and I am very ok with that. Metz just rules. like an extremely heavy Mission of Burma.
finally, the new Skeleton has been doing it for me.

Think I figured out my bass grounding issue. It's not a wire, per se, but I think it's the output jack going bad. I noticed that when I put just a tiny bit of pressure on the metal part of the plug, my bass is dead silent. Thinking maybe one of the internal parts of the output isn't quite touching right and leading to a slight bit of hum. Would also explain why some cables are worse with hum with the slight differences in plugs. Gonna track down the type of jack I need and have a local tech fix it. As well as fix my humming guitar, which appears to be shielding (TONS of hum when not touching metal). Wish me luck...

I don't know, maybe it's an age thing, but the older I get, I find less and less music to my taste. I remember that in my 20s my year end's lists were so jam packed with stuff that I had to do like top 15 or 20 instead of top 10.
Well, in stoner/doom barely anything moved me this year. I loved the new Lowrider, Yuri Gagarin put out a great LP and I listened to a really lot of King Buffalo, but this is pretty much it. Also I really dug the new Mgła, but that's black metal (or maybe that was last year's release?).

Flippers, why are they so fcuking annoying? Twice this has happened to me this year and both times with a Gibson. The latest one is never going to get the ridiculous money he's asking.....the clowns of craigslist
Wow, that's crazy. I admit I flip a ton, but really because I'm trying a bunch of pedals out. I don't do anything too crazy either. I have noticed the market for a lot of pedals has been all over the place this year. Hell meatbox reissues have sold anywhere from $100 to $170 this year!
My addiction with pedals has gone deeper...just picked up a klon type pedal from mathews effects. Looks great, curious to see how it sounds on bass. Too good of a steal to pass up! Also bought another meatbox and DOD phaser. Bought the Time Shadows when that came out, I'll have a report on that when I get a chance. It's definitely a wicked pedal and great for weird, ambient, and synth stuff. Also finally bought a Swanson fuzz from Idiotbox and signed up for his mystery effect program for next year.
First world problems...wish I had time to work on building basses. Maybe that's why I'm getting so many pedals?
Like you, most stuff I've been liquidating has been 'try-out' gear that I only buy if it's a really good deal. If it's not a keeper, I won't really flip things for more than what I paid, because I'm a good dude(?) and feel ok about passing that savings on to the next guy....? I sold this clown a bass for about $75 less than I paid and he was still asking me to knock off another $50 - granted the bass wasn't 100% original, but it had been refinsihed, fixed up/restored nicely, I fixed a couple of other things, set it up perfectly......and then.....(farting noise)
Guess no good deed goes unpunished, so from now on fcuk 'em if they can't pay my price.
