Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Anybody listened to the new Bongzilla album all the way through yet? I'm on the second-to-last track and I think I've already decided it's my new favorite album of theirs. Though it's been a while since I listened to their old stuff all the way through...

I think I still prefer the tighter songwriting on Gateway, but Weedsconsin is a jammer. The longer tracks remind me of the spacy jams they've done when I've seen them live.

I'm thinking of selling some stuff to buy the Fairfield Circuitry Four Eyes Fuzz... Anyone tried this pedal? I have been lusting for it for a long time, but I can't try It and it's expensive :atoz:

I had one recently. It's a super weird pedal that doesn't function like anything else I've tried, and I could not get it to work with the rest of my setup. I found that the "fuzz" gain settings were out of control and totally unusable, but in the lightest gain setting it actually worked very well as a clanky, crunchy overdrive. I've got plenty of those, though, so off it went.

150$ is a great deal! :woot:
I bought mine for almost double (used), if I remember correctly... I had that one paired with a PF115LF
Now switched to Mesa Diesels. I hope the 1*15 will be delivered tomorrow so I have a full weekend for sonic devastation:hyper:

Yeah I just couldn't say no when I saw the price. Couldn't believe it hadn't sold when I called the guy.

Heard those cabs were great! Always wanted to try one. Besides the current lineup, its rare to run into Mesa cabs around here. Or at least whenever I've gone looking for em.

Thanks... For that price, I will not take the risk then :atoz:
I am always attracted by unusable pedals apparently.

The gonk and architect were two sleepers for me. I always wanted to try the gonk, but never saw one in person. It's a ton of fun once tuned and that distortion is so good on bass, IMO. They really knocked it out of the park with the concept of the original. Wish I had known the genius a decade or more ago when I used to see em cheap at second hand shops.
I tuned my Moog MF Trem into ring mod territory to play around with some fuzzes and now I'm really sold on the idea of the gonkulator. Tune it to an A#/B (around 60 hz) then mix the ring low and blend in distortion, and to me it sounds like a goosed tube amp! Have you ever experienced "Ghosting" in an old tube amp? It's frequency intermodulation at 60hz that's introduced from the power supply. When your power caps start getting older they will have this effect

I remember first seeing it on funnyjunk.com or something like that. Reminds me of the gonads and strife video. :woot:

That's cool the MF can do that, never knew that about tube amps either. Not sure if I've ever heard it either.

It's a ring mod in disguise! plug a spare 1/4" plug into the expression jack and the speed control gets fast enough to modulate your signal, tunable with the shape control! I usually just dime all the knobs and use the depth to mix in or out the ring. I've had my MF Trem for a few years and grappled with selling it before, but I like the tone of it too much to kick it so I'm looking to add a 2nd trem for my board. One for doing the subtle movement washy thing that the MF excels at, and one to do a traditional fender style deep trem. I sold a Dr. Scientist Tremolessence for the Moog, would like to probably get another one of those in the future or just build something that does deep sine wave with two knobs alone

In gear news, I got this in a trade. I have never played any DG stuff before but it is really cool. It doesn't have that baked in djent tone that most of the demos have. I'm not sure if I will keep it but has definitely surprised me.

Hey,

I was browsing this thread and I know you posted this a few days back, but was wondering what you do/don’t like about it the Alpha Omicron...

I was pretty dead set on that pedal (and Darkglass in general), but the more I’m researching pedals the less sure I am...

Have watched a few YouTube videos on that one, but can never tell just quite how much distortion you can get out of one of those.

It’s not listed as a full on Fuzz pedal, so not sure if those are The Droids I’m Looking For...

I think DG used to have (or has?) a Vintage Fuzz pedal that might be more of what I’m looking for from a tone perspective, but wasn’t sure if that the Alpha Omicron distortion levels gets in the neighborhood of a fuzz pedal...

I’m not really looking for a djent tone either...

In my head it’s more for Type O Negative type paint peeling minor key distortion...

I’m thinking I might like the Big Muff Pi Or the Big Muff Pi Deluxe (not a bad looking pedal, but not as aesthetically pleasing as the stuff Darkglass makes)...

Sadly I can’t believe I haven’t thought to go look at more pedals on Equipboard (including whatever Mr. Steele was using on Bloody Kisses and October Rust)...

Also...Sadly, I can’t ever read the name of that Darkglass pedal without my mind going to this:

Prior to now I somehow hadn’t located the Stoner/Doom Metal thread on TB and for the love of God I’m not sure why not (hopefully it’s okay to post here without an invitation)...

People in the general forums are definitely nice especially compared to other places on the Interwebs, but sometimes I feel like I’m speaking another language out there and I’ve been on kind of a Doom Metal kick lately anyway.

The recent 4/20 probably had something to do with that...

Actually scratch that, it’s always 4/20 somewhere in my book...

Thanks! \m/

No invite needed, but you gotta pick a side. We all get along here, but on the outside things can get ugly.

Welcome! The more the merrier.

On the subject of bass distortion pedals, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the Ibanez PD7. It may not be even remotely what you're looking for, but I have a Pavlovian need to mention whenever possible.

New cab day… (the 1x15)
Not 100% happy about it. Like pretty much everything by Mesa I tried so far, it's really "articulate" and "clanky" sounding, but quite soulless and sterile. Has more mids than the Ampeg, seems to me, and the lows are not as big (which is where all that clarity comes from, I guess…) which I tried to compensate with the EQ, but dunno. On the fast/complex riffs I like it but in general it's not as aggressive as the Ampegs I had so far.
I don't think it's a keeper… apparently in the end bigger Ampegs is the way to go

Hi Everybody,

Follow up question to my post from last night...

Does anyone here have suggestions for bands to listen to that sound somewhat similar to Type O Negative or Life Of Agony???

For Type O Negative-I’ve listened to them since high school and I know the surviving members went on to form A Pale Horse Named death, but wondering what other bands out there sound somewhat similar musically even if they are vocally different...

Started listening to Life Of Agony a little while back and really like what I’ve heard so far (slow, distorted and sludgy w a few AIC like vocals every now and then)...

Thanks! \m/

I like that pedal a lot. I think it has a ton of gain on tap and I like the Omega side a lot in particular. I don't have any complaints really. If I had to come up with something I would say that I didn't like the growl switch engaged. That switch seems to make it sound like the rest of the DG stuff in a lot of ways. With all of that said, I did already sell it in order to fund something different. I really do like that pedal a lot but I am keeping my collection very slim these days. If I saw a good deal on one down the line, I would definitely pick one up again.
