Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Doomers, I've been making a conscious effort to stay away from my computer/socials this summer. I've been doing a weekly-ish scrolls of the board, but that's about it.

Updates: My band recorded and realized this:
Along with CD's and merch, we did a small run of a lathe-cut, mono single and we are down to 5.
I played a show last week, will play again on Sat, and then at the end of the month.
Gear wise, I threw some Nordstrand Power Blades and 2B preamp in an active MIM p-bass and I'm really enjoying the sound.
I've also been dealing with tennis elbow in my left hand and right hand cramping in the muscle between my thumb and index finger when I am fingerpicking. It's driving me crazy, but I suppose this is 40...

I'll be at the Om show. I've seen Earth and will probably pass this time around. I work in Boulder so I tend to shy away from hanging out there. I'm on the fence with Elder. I love their older stuff but the new album isn't my thing. I am going to Russian Circles, and a Boris and Nothing cobill as well. I'm also thinking about NIN at Red Rocks, but that will require an influx of cash.

So, weeks without band practice and my being otherwise idle made me decide to try to turn a Moog improvisation into sort of a song and a music video. Not really doom, but plenty stoner. I really enjoyed making it, hope you guys enjoy it too!



FWIW, the bass was a MIJ Precision through a Fuzz War into a Wampler Faux Tape Echo. It accidentally generates some feedback at the end through my monitors, and I decided to keep it.

I've sold and bought too many of them over the years, if I didn't have one eventually I'd miss that feel/sound and get another...go figure because that's basically what I started out with and played forever until I could afford other things. I have a '90s Korean one now and I made a pact w/ myself to not get rid of it. Gear porn! It's been a while so let's get some in here

... And yeah, I feel that way about the P as well. I'm prob gonna try to keep this one I just bought for forever (provided the weight and balance is ok.) but who knows, my old P didn't have great balance and it was close to 12 lbs. Needless to say, it was pretty rough to actually play, but it sounded great in those situations where you needed a p bass.

Heheh, my answer used to be "I hate their neck, and I hate their pickup" on the Precision Bass question. But once I played my then guitarist's blue MIJ E-serial Precision with that band, it just sat in the right place in the mix and neck just felt right in a way that others I had played did not.

He wouldn't sell it to me, so I bought my black one off Reverb. It played exactly the same way his blue one did. If anything, I liked the sound of the pickup better. I decided that I preferred flats on it in general, especially with fuzz. He eventually did sell it to me, so I have them both. The black with flats, and the blue with chap-stik on its rounds. Surprisingly, I haven't broken a string on either in years. Since then, a friend gave me a SX 3/4 scale copy of a Precision, strung with flats. Once I had its intonation set, it's become my grab-and-go bass. The black and blue ones are my primary and backup. I will still grab something like my Thunderbird , the Danelectro, or the Mustang with the PJ setup and a switch if I want a particularly bite-y sound on a song. I don't really sell anything, but those simple single split-p-humbucker guitars are so useful that they'd be the last I'd sell.

Well, on the subject of P-basses I guess I lucked out: my first bass was a Japanese Fender Precision (what are E-serials by the way?) that felt familiar already in the store, and it has remained my number one through five years of bass playing. Always with flats. Familiarity is the key word here, it's probably not the greatest P but it feels like home.

I'm in a semi-sleepless night right now, so I'm not shooting any gear porn. I hope I'll remember later.

From the early 80s to the early 90s (not sure of the exact dates) Fender moved all of their production to Japan. They're all built in the Fujigen factory, so it's basically like getting a lawsuit instrument, but it actually has Fender's logo on the headstock. The JV, SQ and E serials are early in that run. I've liked every one of them I've played, and as I said, I don't generally mesh well with Precisions.
