Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Been playing my newly-strung-with-rounds (and also newly-wired-with-Bartolini 5.4AP harness) Ibanez SR505 for a few weeks now. Still loving it, despite it not being flats. I'm as amazed as anyone. With that in mind, does anybody have any info or experience with D'Addario rounds vs. EB Cobalt Flats? I loved my old Chromes, but I'm also really loving my new D'Addario rounds. I hear the Cobalt Flats are brighter than rounds, and I have a bass that definitely needs new strings (changing my SR505 strings made that abundantly clear! This bass used to be "bright" but it's incredibly dull compared to the new rounds!).

Anyway, nothing really new here. Spent the last few weeks either on vacation or fixing things that spontaneously broke in the house. Back to work full time starting Monday, so I really need to make sure my practice schedule sticks. Still loving my dirt pedals, and have a grand old time playing along to the songs I know using excessive dirt. Good times.

I just threw a set of Cobalt flats on my fretless L-2000. Definitely bright for flats. That said, which D’Addario rounds are you referring to? I’m not the biggest D’Addario fan, but I have used enough of their sets to know that, given string construction variations, most are going to sound a little bit brighter than the Cobalts. The Cobalts feel much better though, and it’s worth the minimal trade off in brightness on the G&L.

Now, I don’t play Soundgears so this might be a different proposition for you.

Sorry, no help here, I've been using Chromes exclusively for years.

What are yall up to this weekend? We have SJ Jazz Fest this weekend, so I'm planning on going to do that and going to try to expose my kid to some more music culture, lol.
My new bass should get here today, so hopefully i'll have some time to get that setup, swap the pick guard, tweak the electronics, etc before heading out tonight for music.

I figure a musical proof of life is warranted:

Also saw a couple friends of my drummer perform Wed night out here… really cool night of ambientish heavy music.

The usual...being a miserable shut-in and annoying my cats with the awful "music" (I use that term loosely) I try to make.

You have cooler friends than me. I totally spaced on Steve Von Till when he came through Denver. I love the Harvestman album!

Tangential old man rant- I miss the days when friends, bands, and clubs would create Facebook events that would populate my calendar. It doesn't exist in IG and if I don't write down an event listed in someone's story immediately, I forget. I lack the executive functioning to keep up with that stuff. I also missed Author & Punisher when they came through this past May for the same reason.

Older man rant: I miss the days when we found out about shows without having to resort to social media.

I'm totally with you on the FB event changes these days. Its all borderline unusable now.

Well that explains why you sometimes walk into the room and say you've nothing to add.

Totally legit, and in fact I'm much the same. I play through a tuner, a compressor, and an HPF. Over the past two years I have adjusted the settings on my compressor exactly once.

But who knows. I bought an EBS Multi Drive so maybe I'll never stop talking about it now. :laugh:

(Yeah sure. Set & forget is what I'm usually about.)

I'm apparently fixing my bike (unfortunately, and I have no idea what I'm doing) before a bike ride tomorrow, or else my wife and I have wasted about $50... In what EVERYONE is claiming is a simple fix and one that anybody can do (likely just patch to the inner tube), my bike simply won't allow itself to function as every other demo shows. Can't get the tire off the rim to even get to the tube! And I'm fairly handy!

Lately, everything in the house is revolting and breaking down on me to prevent me from playing much bass at all. Ready for that to stop for sure!

They were just the standard D'Addario set - had to grab them quick at GC. Nothing fancy. And I also realize I said the Cobalts are brighter than rounds - THAT was a mistake. I meant they were brighter than most flats. Is that the case? I'm liking the brightness of my new rounds, but do miss a bit of the thump of flats. Hoping maybe Cobalts can do both?
