Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Some interesting things were said today in the Luthier's Corner here on TalkBass. The subject of conversation was passive single pickup basses. Mr. Bruce Johnson, who is like the godfather of the Luthier's Corner, tells us that some of his basses are used for Doom:
"My AMB-2 Scroll Bass has actually turned out to be excellent for....Doom Metal!! I never expected that, because I designed the AMB-2 to sound more like an upright bass; percussive attack curve and mid-range coloration, etc. But one of my customers has two of my AMB-2's and uses them for serious Doom Metal. He's found that the single pickup, passive, with extra clear sub-lows is a great base signal into his distortion chain. It makes the distortion really bad-ass. The distortion is clearer, if that makes sense. I've heard his albums; the bass tones make your chest rattle! Which is hilarious to me, thinking that's my sweet, elegant Scroll Bass doing that!"

My customer, Rob Morffit, is the leader of the LA based band Witches Of Hell. Some serious Doom Metal. Album artwork NSFW. He has two of my AMB-2's, #009 and #017. #009 is fairly nasty looking, in classic red/black sunburst. But #017 is one of my walnut models, made to look like a bass from the 1940's, that your Grandpa would have played. It's amazing to me to think of Rob playing it in live Doom Metal shows, rattling chests of screaming audiences.....But he loves them, sound, look and feel. They are his two favorite basses. I think he has #017 set up BEAD."
And I can totally understand why. I want one bad, but cannot justify the price.
Bruce Johnson is a national treasure. Also, the Ampeg “Devil” bass seems the clear choice for hailing satan.

Second gig yesterday (no Doom/Stoner though). Maaan was I tired: Woke up at a 5:30 am and got ready for school (I'm a teacher). Of course there had to be an open house event that day where I had to show off my teachin' magic while keeping parents entertained and kids from doing questionable things. This was followed by a Christmas market event at my school which lasted until 5 pm. Our sound check was scheduled for half an hour later. All of this while being sick, of course.
Needless to say, adrenaline kicked in and we rocked.

Is open house for y'all during school hours? We usually do ours after school and sometimes parents come without their kids and the Teachers definitely aren't expected to be doing any childcare. So I threw these SD Quarter Pounds in to this Warmoth parts bass because it's what I had lying around. They were never my favorite P bass picks but after wiring this back up I had the tone all the way down when I went to test and was pleasantly surprised. They have quite a bit of girth to them and I'm going to at least give the a try if we ever have practice again. Go figure, I guess the tone knob is there for a reason. It was a wenge neck and is not the lightest weight bass on the planet. Around 10.5lbs. I think I'll name it The Behemoth.

Had the first show with the new band at a benefit yesterday. It was a short all covers set that we kind of threw together to have a set for this benefit, but it seemed to be well received. Here's to hoping we have a few originals finished before we book another show. 
This week's music show was an alt-country (leaning more to the country side of the spectrum) lady named Nikki Lane. Pretty standard band format, (P-bass through a Fender Super 300 and single cab) Telecaster through a Twin Reverb, smaller kit for the drums. Good tight band, bass player had backup vocal/duet duties, pretty professional show. My wife loved it. It was a bit too country for my tastes, I was hoping to have ripping Tele the whole time, but he only got set loose for a sole segment about halfway through the set. Great guitar player, though.
