Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

So, I stated my goals for 2023. What's everybody else planning?

Drink a bit less
Write and record a lot more
Get more exercise than I have been

Oddly, I think I've been recruited to play guitar in a "Jesus Lizard style" band. I'm not sure my fingers are up to it, but we'll find out.

So, I've been playing along to one of my most reviled bands, Led Zeppelin, who I have avoided and denigrated for 30 years, and, by gum, they are actually pretty good.

Hehehe, they were actually my favorite band when I was a kid, and I owned a copy of all of their albums. I got to the point where "I'm not pulling these records out anymore, I hear *all* of these songs on the radio." So I got tired of them and sold them. Eventually, they stopped getting played on the radio so much, and I developed an appetite for them again. So, I bought I and II again. I doubt I will re-purchase any more of them, but I wanted those two back.

Same story here. I was just "Not this bulls**t again." when they would come on the radio, and immediately turn the station.

Possibly a sad story, more likely a smart story: I had Monday off, and while running some errands I had told my wife I was going to pop in to Guitar Center to look at things and not buy them. As I was driving, I realized I don't need anything gear-wise, and just went home and played along to songs in my basement.

last time I was in GC I couldn't even find a guitar cable in the bass area and none of the amps I wanted to play were plugged into speakers, etc. The guitar store I actually like has a great selection of basses but honestly has 2 different fender rumbles as the bass amps...which is not inspiring

Hehehe, I don't hate the Beatles, but probably the only reason I know any of their songs is because it's too easy to troll my drummer by breaking into one of them. He acts like he's old enough to have taken a side in the Rolling Stones/Beatles wars.

I can't really stand Zeppelin OR The Beatles. Never jived with either. Not knocking them, as there are certainly plenty of bands I'm into most people can't stand. I just have no interest and never found anything that great about either band. I'm a big Sabbath fan, though.

I have never ever had a light cab before until today. Saw this come up local for VERY cheap and couldn't pass it up. Schroder 1212L. Easy 35lb to carry, 800w, sounds great.

Crazy to me after all those years of carrying 100lb 4x12 pv cabs that I can one hand this

Always makes me laugh inside when I remember the stones were considered the “bad boy” band.

I'm came to heavier music very much thru 70s hard rock. And got a wider appreciation of music via the Beatles before that.

Zeppelin made me want to be in a band and on stage. Still does it for me too.

As for a hot take, I will say the Beach Boys and specifically Pet Sounds is the single most overrated overhyped and undeservingly praised album ever.

Back in my guitar days, I had the smaller Sovtek mig50 "Tube Midget" head. Damn that thing could doom. Too bad I didn't want to at the time. It killed with humbuckers or my tele, but I hated it with a strat as it tended to wash out all the 'strattiness' of those single coils. Lots of low end too.

Hehehe, other than the theremin in "Good Vibrations", I can't STAND the Beach Boys. Close vocal harmonies (that's also my main problem with the Beatles) , ugh.

It’s not the Beatles themselves as much as the resentment I harbor towards their boomer fans, who just can’t stfu. I don’t go about carrying on about how great and relevant some boy band from the 80’s is.

Just like the homers in whatever state I'm in make me despise all of their favorite sports teams.

A guy I know, absolutely worships Jimmy Page. And any music is always brought back to LZ.

I don't really make resolutions. I just try to not be too much of a sh*thead during the holidays so I don't have to dig my way back into a rhythm with music, work, projects, etc. Did pretty good this year I suppose. The band is coming back from a two month hiatus. Releasing the last two of our three EP series stemming from our first batch of songs, and then working on some new stuff. Stoked for that. General goals?

• Less drinking and get back to eating more stuff that grows from the ground.
• More trail running.
• Write one new song per month with the band.
• Get band merch done and finally get our tunes on streaming services.
• Finish the basement rebuild so I can have a bass/music room again.
• Spend less money, which flies directly in the face of the basement project.

Like I can dig some TOOL but only if I never read anything their true believers post online. Despite Danny Carey being a semi-divine being, no, Tool is not the most technical most elaborately and intricately written music in the history of the universe with lyrics that will bless you with deep gnosis when your feeble mind finally grasps their esoteric majesty.

They are just HELMET if Helmet took DMT.

But hey, Tool might be the only band to get more mileage out of 0--10--12 than Sleep. Lol.
