I have barely played lately, just a few minutes a week mostly rehashing my old standbys. Instead, I've been catching up on my reading and am feeling quite accomplished. Finished an anthology of Anglo-Saxon lit the other day, and have now begun Canterbury Tales. Much like my musical tastes, my literary tastes are far from normal. (Because most people don't read this stuff for fun.)

Well, if it was a euphemism, it would have been more along the lines of "my wife is stepping over that anthill in my back yard as I type." Lol. No, she's actually quite the trekker, and has hiked Machu Pichu (well, the hill next to it, I guess), trekked in the Himalayas with me, done tons of trips in the U.S., and wants to do more. I don't know if you can trek Mt. Fuji, but one of our future vacations will be to Japan, so I can attend a few days of the summer basho (sumo tournament). We're also going to go to see the World Nomad Games in the near future.
I read the Canterbury Tales in college as part of my degree, and quite liked them. Very funny and ribald.

I saw (and shot) an extraordinary gig last weekend: Alain Johannes supported/backed by Iron Jinn. Have been spinning Eleven songs ever since (I totally slept on that band), and some of the old Desert Sessions goodies, of course.

Slightly tangential, I figure this would be the crowd to ask...

One project is with a baritone guitar, so I mostly play my five Yammy BB or an ATK tuned BEAD. The other project is in C standard. Having the benefit of a few more basses I can set up for particular projects, do any of you have a preference between tuning BEAD up or tuning EADG down to C?

I actually like a lighter tension, so i’m using 55-110 Cobalt flats for C on my Rick. Lets my left hand do all the wobbly stuff without feeling completely like overcooked angel hair. There’s something to be said for both though and really it all comes down to your preferred feel.

I've done both and prefer tuning BEAD up because I'm a masochist for string tension. Gotta have that crisp low string.

All of those things sound awesome. My wife and I enjoy hiking, and have hiked all over Utah's National Parks, but haven't gone out of the country yet, and no mountains. Somehow - even as an English Major - I was never made to read Canterbury Tales. I'm quite enjoying them - especially when I get to tell my wife it's making fun of her like in one of today's stories. There was a mention in one of the tales about a man who only needs 5 hours of good sleep, but must pretend to get more in order not to waken the wife. This is almost identical to my wife and my sleeping situation! (Of course, in typical ribald fashion, the man also remarks something to the extent that perhaps the wife would be able to sleep more if she weren't so attractive and her husband would give her peace in the bedroom.) Anyway, I'm mostly through the Tales after tonight, and have to decide if I'm going to keep with some "heavy" reading, or return to some sci-fi/fantasy series I have been reading and catching up on. We'll see where I end up.

Her parents own a place in Scottsdale, and when we take a trip down there, all of them go out to hike the local hills/mountains. I'm not a hiker at my advance level of decrepitness, so I just hang out at the house while they do that. (Or hit up a golf course.) I think the next time we go down, if there is a time when I can scam the family car, I'd like to do a tour of Phoenix/Scottsdale music stores. I don't know of any that are legendary like Chicago Music Exchange (which I've done.) or Manny's (crossed that off the list 3 years ago. Got to play a Ritter, and was sweating about putting a ding in it. Lol.)

Saw Melvins + Boris on Tuesday night. It was a great time. Melvins definitely sounded a lot better (especially guitar tone and drum tone) and tighter. Coady Willis crushed it. First show I've been to since 2019. Glad I forced myself out of the house for it. Visually, there's just something special about a giant Orange stack.
