Mostly the pickups. The new ones just sound like a $20 toy bass to me. they have this plastic-like quality to the sound. very weird I don't really understand.
The necks on Rics are such a pain because it varies from month to month it seems. some Rics have giant baseball bats for necks and others have really small j-bass style necks. I have 2 4001s, my 1973 has the slimmest neck I have ever seen. My 1980 is chunkier but still very playable. the 3 4003s that I have owned all had very thick necks which I thought I could get used to but they were just too much, especially from the nut to about the 5th fret, The 4003s also all had a very dull sound, no snap at all. But I have seen some 4003s with extremely slim necks too, never had a chance to own one though. I don't know if the thick necks are contributing to the dull tones, i think they could be.

Well....since getting home,
I've reevaluated my rig and decided to change it up a bit. I've actually gone nuts. I sold both PVYs (VB-2 & VTA 400) & I'm still looking to sell the Acoustic 370. I initially picked up a SVT 6 PRO thinking it would satisfy my want for an SVT but it didn't, so yesterday I picked up a SVT II (non pro w/the single master volume and no gain.) I also sold the SUNN 215BH and picked a SWR Big Bertha loaded w/ 2 Faital 15PR400.(my poor man's Dually.) Then I changed out the pickup in my P to a EMG Geezer Butler signature model.
I am finally approaching the sound I've been looking for. We had an early practice today and it was the first time that I was happy with a relatively "clean"(I use the VMT always on but it's pretty tame overall.) tone. The SVT just sounds great from the get go. I just upped the mids and put the freq selector to the lowest setting and it was great. At about noon it starts getting woolly and it only gets hairy'er from there.
Needless to say I'm excited for future bass bliss.

I thought about it too long, when I went up to GC today it was already gone. It's cool though, I have no reason to hurry in building my board. It will come together when it comes together.
Working tonight, as usual. Saturdays generally start off slow at the Shaker but in the first couple of hours I already scored a $20 tip from a customer for playing Red Fang and a double shot of Crown on the rocks from a different guy for taking care of his favorite dancer. It this kind of stuff the reminds me why I keep doing this.

Picked up the new mastodon. Enjoying it way more than I expected to.
Me and my friends didn't realize you could just hang out on the square and drink beer... Tons of random live music and people. Just byob and a chair, book or something to do.

The full name, said with the accent most people around here have, is barely four syllables, as the first two are very abbreviated (like "snfrncsco"). Lots of people just call it "the city." Sometimes I've seen people call it "SF" or even "San Fran." "Frisco" is more a pejorative.
That Epiphone is giving me GAS. Very cool bass.After a brainbusting week at work, it was nice to get a good gig on Friday. I'm usually averse to outdoor gigs, but the setup was pro and the temp & breeze felt great. There'd been a slight chance of rain all day so I packed the F800 in lieu of the AD200 and it did not disappoint! Set went well and got a good reaction. Now, coffee...

See, it's funny, I only have a 4001, despite liking 4003s I've tried more than 4001s.
I've heard it's more the caps than the pickups. The ones RIC uses now supposedly vary kinda wildly in spec.

shag people who bash music just because they don't like it. You can just not like poopie because you don't like it; you don't need a reason. You don't need to justify your dislike by saying that the music is somehow objectively bad. I don't like stuff that a lot of you guys in here like, but that doesn't mean it's bad, just means it's not for me.

Tried putting the cab on its side or on its bottom instead of on its back? My guitarist does that and he can fit even more crap in that way.
I don't think it fits that way. Rubs the headliner, trying to keep it clean man. Miss my truck!
Huh. Seems like it would be just too short by a little, then. A guitar cab or my guitar cab-width bass cab fits on its side in the Scion I use.
