I meant to pop in with life updates or whatever, but it was the first week of summer break and I was immersed in kid time. I got a new recording computer setup, still waiting on a few old plug-in licenses to be transferred to a new iLok account and I haven't gotten around to recording anything yet, just been playing bass and guitar in my bedroom lately and messing around with gear for fun to try things out.

Having owned and demo'd hundreds of pedals, commissioned custom builds, knowing people who made and designed stuff, and shot out tons of them between every level from $35 cheap stuff to wildly expensive, my take on boutique is it's worth it for unique features and unique designs. Otherwise, if it's just a tubescreamer with NOS mojo parts, hand wired, with a pretty enclosure, it will sound pretty much the same as the cheapest TS copy with the correct circuitry. Though that's no reason not to buy it if someone can afford it and wants it. There are some custom and boutique stuff I kinda wish I still owned, but I'm totally happy playing through a couple production dirt pedals not meant for bass, that I can easily get to sound the way I like.

I'm half-serious when I say $3000 will get you a boutique bass that will get you a lot of likes on social media when you post a picture, but $3000 worth of boutique pedals will get you ten posts with that same amount of likes.

Speaking hypothetically, of course, I own a DI but it's not even a pedal, doesn't have a footswitch.

Howdy, all! I got a whoooole lotta nothin'. Same ol' boring basement bass player, noodling along with the iPad, albeit poorly. LOL. Same gear, same pets, same house, same wife, same job. Color me content.

I posted over on the amps sub about dragging my heavy (to weak-assed me) Yorkie combo home from a buddy's house, and griping about it being unwieldy, and had a lot of nice feedback from ythe forumites there. So, I went looking on CL Cleveland. Found a TC Electronig BG250 2x8" for $300. That caught my eye for a bit since it's twice the power of my current combo, and about 1/2 the weight. Anyone have any experience with smaller diameter speakers being able to carry the bass?

I have this weird Aria 80s combo amp called the LOCO Micro Bass Amp. I think it has two 6" drivers in it. It has a funky sound which I mostly attribute to the EQ layout, which is 3 band, each band having both a level AND a frequency select knob. It doesn't do super sub lows, but it's no slouch either. I think that a modern TCtronic 2x8 will sound ok to you and me. I was looking at one of their class D heads because they're cheap, but I read they can't get hairy by turning up the gain. But I'm just a old kook sitting in my home studio with 9 amps.

Only 9? Slacker! Lol.
I was doing some out loud noodling on the Yorkie, and decided it works just fine for my needs. I'm actively trying to get the most out of the gear I currently own, since I'm on the back nine of life and don't want to leave too much s**t for my wife to deal with when I croak. Yeah, morbid, but, realistic.

On a pure gear tangent, I tried hooking up the Joyo California Sound pedal that I got on a whim for $20 as the preamp going in to the effects retunr, and it sounded pretty solid. It added a distortion that went from barely noticable to way over the top, but, it was more, umm, "fizzy" than "velvety", so, it may be just used for guitar.

the life is unfair a hyperfuzz/super fuzz variant.. and I have few muffs.. the 420 is the 360 fuzz.. I have the actual hyper fuzz.. a johnk depthcharge.. muffs- bluebeard.. hlud black mass.. walker audio ronin.. devi ever soda meiser.. super collider 71 led mode.. thank you fuzz..

Any secret settings on the Supercollider '71? I've had one for years, and never quite got the tone I hoped for out of it. Currently still loving my BAT Priestess and CMC Bubble Font for my bass fuzz needs, and a Swollen Pickle and CMC Civil War for guitar.

In related news, I got to play a good deal today! Woo! It was mostly guitar, with a little bass thrown in. Was trying to get my (non-existant guitar) chops up, then accidentally made a riff I enjoyed and noodled/practiced for a long while after. The bass practice was in trying to put a bass line to the same riff, but seeing as I couldn't quite get the riff exactly how I wanted on guitar, that didn't go too far. But I enjoyed it nonetheless! Had a blast boosting my fuzzes with OD pedals. Good times.
