Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Been away a few days. Things got stupid with work so I put in my resignation this afternoon.
I really hate trying to make things sound professional and still voice my grievances. It all comes out vague and softcore.
I prefer my communicate to include graphic penetration.
Its just a dispute with middle management that isn't(completely)upper management's problem.
Oooof hope you have something else lined up already. Personally don't like what I do for a living these days but I eat my pride for a paycheck.

Great when you can make money doing something you'd be doing anyway.
True that. I was surprised someone who came in the club knew about Red Fang. I have to play so much crap it's pathetic but occasionally I get to slip something I think is good in the mix.

I can't wait to go home because the MXR Bass Octave Deluxe I picked up off the classifieds is showing up today. Missed having an octave down pedal for guitar.
I would be real interested in hearing what you think of it. I'm sort of shopping for octave and compressor pedals.

Derp, use a pick. (runs away giggling.)
I play with a pick. I just started out that way and stuck with it. It used to be my weakness but these days I see it as a strength because my pick hand is really coming around. I do have pretty hard fingertips on my left hand but overall my hands are girlie soft because I have been a DJ for 24 years so no real work. I have to wear gloves when i cut my grass or I'll get a blister.

That sucks bro. I hate looking for work. I have been trying to get out of the club business but my resume looks like a history of strip clubs in the Wichita area. I think that might be working against me...

Nope but the Mrs. is the breadwinner this time so mine goes mostly in savings.
It's not really a pride thing so much as I'm trying to be a less angry person. The dude has no control over what comes out of his mouth and eventually it's gonna cause him dental problems.
I'm just not interested in fuming an hour or two every day after work.

Sam, this new Monobrow disc ****ing rips.
Thanks man!

The other day we were all chatting and saying that it's going to be really hard for us to best this album.

The thought of having to start from scratch is so daunting. I have no idea where or how we'll come up with new material....then tonight out of nowhere we wrote an epic two part song that I think is the heaviest most doomy material we've written....go figure.

Such is the way of the cosmic cloud...

But yes I agree my favorite album of yours.

Flats, man, flats.
No. I want it to hurt when I play, dammit.

We tune to Drop C for almost all of our tracks, but I'm too stupid to understand why. It definitely works though. However, I much prefer to be in standard tuning as I can improvise and write in standard much easier.
Maybe tune to C standard?
For me the irritation with drop C is that I hate drop tunings, and I also hate tuning to C, because it's just off of where string choice would be easy (B).

Sounds fine so long as everyone is pushing the same notes. It's writing and improve that cripple me as muscle memory needs to remember where things are. I don't want to think about it I want to do it.
Yeah, this is why I don't like drop tunings. My muscle memory is kinda set for standard ones, so all the shapes I know for arpeggios and fills and such are wrong if it's a 5th between those lowest two strings instead of a 4th.

I've played bass for 16 years now, most of that time in bands. Including an 8 year stretch where I also worked in freezers. My hands have been jacked up and cracked and bleeding, but I have never had a blister from playing bass.
I have a blister on my middle finger right now, actually. It's mostly from upright.

I have been playing steady for about 20 years. 5 years in the kitchen, and I didnt notice the bass playing. Was too busy dealing with burns and cuts on my hands to worry about blisters from playing. Part of my issue is technique. I started out on upright, and have used a hard attack.
I'm kinda the same, I've always had a hard attack, but it got way harder when I started playing upright.

explain these blisters youre talking about. and why are you playing so hard?
Why are you NOT playing so hard? Of all people.

yeah i get those if i dont play enough or if i play way too hard. shouldnt be happening all the time tho.

treat that bass like a lady, dont try and fingerbang it to death lol
My basses are kinky. That's how they like it. Don't kink-shame, man.

I cant manage it for long sessions. I end up dropping the damn thing and dont have time to grab another one.

There was just something about the sound of a Stingray being played hard.
I keep my picks in the small pocket in my jeans. If I drop one, I just grab another.

I find a lot of basses sound good with a heavy attack. P-basses and Rickenbackers especially.

Oooohhhh, manly. Bet the ladies loved those iron like claws caressing their flesh.
My ex did, actually.

Sometimes miss the days when E was about as low as anyone went.
Damn Black Sabbath, ruining things with their newfangled low tunings.

Ok, Wednesday is the last class of my undergrad. Then I have to stop enjoying trees a bit, find a real job. Its the real world and get a career going time. So I have to drop the stoner, and face the doom...

Also I'm realizing living in a house alone, even a little one is kinda lonely. I need girlfriend... been over a year since I was consistently in/with a person. In the last year I lost 100 pounds, got a good little rent house and now I'm a uni graduate. So hopefully being a pretty fit, educated, musical dude who can cook and doesn't live with mom proves enticing to someone for more than a night or two.

Then again as you all know I'm a wee bit strange, and I can't do nothing about that, but compound it over time like interest.

So, after having my pedalboard the same way for as long as I've owned it... probably about four years, I might be switching things up a bit. Used a Swollen Pickle today, and it was good for an extra "oomph" at the end of one of the new songs we're working on.

I kinda wonder if my Big Muff with a mod to disengage the tone circuit with a switch might accomplish the same thing, though...

Also I need some sort of bass e-bow.

To be honest, you've listed some good reasons why you SHOULD keep playing the field. Don't try to hurry anything, take it easy, take it slow, the right one will come along when the time is right.
