Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Yeah you'll probably have to at least remove the 15" speaker to get to it. If you need to remove the amp I'd be surprised.
Is your basic 112 one of the new lightweight peavey combos?
Those are supposed to sound very good.
Nah it's an older one. Same kind as the TNT I bought. The ones with the red on the front panel.

Thanks for the info on the TNT. I'm going to try to tackle that tomorrow.

On my doom rig some of my cabinets have little pieces of tolex sticking up where they were scraped on something. I want to glue the pieces down. Any recommendations on glue for that? I'm also thinking about painting the metal grills red but I'm not sure yet.

Had it a couple months maybe. I lived in an apartment until a month ago so it was only playable at lowwww levels or not at all. Now my house is old and stuff shakes when I play it, it causes lots of either speaker distortion or what I call "room distortion" so far. So I'm at my parents fixing up the alphabass tube head I bought then testing it into the dually to see if it's the cab/speakers (faitals) that are not as loud as I would think, or it was just my house causing the the issue with its sympathetic vibrations and quirks, or I'm going deaf.
We can check it out against my 810 without volume limits...

the MKII doesn't get a lot of love. for not much more money you can get the MKIII which is supposed to be a much better amp. But it will also depend on your headphones. If they are less than 100 ohms impedance then I'd stick with the 1+. It drives low impedance headphones much better. the all tube MKIII and MKII are better suited for high impedance headphones.
True but it can be used as a preamp which really appeals to me.
I'd love to just crank it into a poweramp running my fearful. Loud, tubey clear.

Alphabass leaky caps fixed. Tubes probably need replacing though.

Problem is my Faital loaded dually still sounds terribly weird. You guys have described epic volume and I'm getting very underwhelming volume and speaker farts like crazy on my little bronco bass tuned to E. I tried my EB-0 with the 30k pickup and it sounded like absolute garbage still tuned to E. I've had to dismantle it and fix a few loose screws with toothpicks and do the battery test with my electrical engineer dad just now and the speakers are in phase it appears.

So far I've used the ampeg v3 (50 watts), gk mb500 (500 watts) and the alphabass (160 watts). The gk gets louder than the others but not much and farts out well before I get to any serious volume.

My old fender bxr200 1x15 combo slayed this $1200 cab and knocked poopie down at half volume (and without an extension cab).

I've EQ'd all those heads every which way and it's still messing up and farting. I understand the V3 and alphabass might get dirty, but they are farting not tube distorting, as is the clean channel of the GK I'm not even running it's boost it's switched off not turned down.

I've also used it in my friends second story duplex, my old apartment, my house, and my parents house now. Two were second story, my house has no foundation really, my parents house is stout stout stout. Also I've put it in corners, and all kinda placements. Not to mentioned out my head right on the grill, near the cab, stood in front, across the room and in another room and it's still the same farty underwhelming tone.

I'd be afraid I was going deaf but I can hear quiet stuff no problem. And iPhone headphones can still play things too loud for me.

I bought this $1,200+ thing after being told is never hear speaker distortion, that this thing especially with faitals would be clean volume up until it exploded, and that would be after you pumped over 1,000 watts into it, not part of 500. I might compete with a drummer but it'd sound like ass.

What's up?? I'll be posting this to greenboy forums shortly, I haven't said anything yet as I was trying to be polite and see if it was my amps or basses or the speakers just needed to break in but I'm still not sure what's up. I don't play in a band currently, but I can play as loudly as I want at home and do jam with friends, so I might not play as much as some of you guys but idk what's up.

Corey played me a clip of his faital loaded dually with a gk mb800 and a BEAD tuned bass and it was thick clean GK tone, also he said at his recording volumes it was unbelievably loud. This again like I said farts on an E string at under half volume on the mb500!

I'm not sure what my options are, does this have a warranty? I got it in the mail, unpacked it at my friends where it was delivered, took it to my apartment, then my house now my parents, just the trunk of the car. Also this duratex breaks off kinda easy no? I have a few little pieces missing and I've barely moved it, partly because I have no where to take it and partly because again it's $1,200+ and I'm babying it like crazy and afraid as anything to hurt it, though I think it was born damaged.

Best TNT version, IMO. Sounds killer. Black widow right? Heavy and"undersized " but really cool amp. That guy runs an external speaker too yeah? 2001~2002ish.
Great combo if we're talking about the same one. Just strong enough to make a black widow cry and not enough to kill it unless you boost the bass stupid.
Damn I hate combos but that one is cool.

If you bought from an authorized dealer they are ALL standup guys, the last thing they want is anyone to be dissatisfied with their product. Sounds like you've tried multiple amps and speakers, which are important troubleshooting steps.
The minute you were questioning it's quality you should have called your builder. I'm sure they would have stopped everything to resolve the issue. I'd also bet a fair chunk money they are happy to assist still.
Could be a bad speaker or a number of other things.
I'm quite sure you'll get the assistance you need. Email them as soon as you can and call during business hours.
They'll get you sorted out.

eagerly awaiting this lol. who built it for you by the way? sucks to hear about that tho, all the other dually comments are that its a nice loud cab.

I knew you'd appear soon as I said anything! Dukeorock was my authorized builder.

It scared me at first and still makes me think I'm going deaf. My parents think anything over acoustic guitar unplugged is deafening and don't understand tone (neither plays, and dad thought my bass was a drum set for a while apparently).

Laz once said he broke/cracked plaster off the ceiling playing through his and that right their sold me on getting the cab lol. Also the other greenboy designs won't fit in my car.

There was a guy playing a piezo equipped upright last night at the restaurant I was at into a behringer ultrabass 3500 or whatever head into a fender 4x10 and I was jealous of the volume he got playing with a harpist and jazz bebop little drum kit played with brushes.

Should a bought a peavey...

Really though that sucks, maybe you got bum speakers from factory? Hopefully its not expensive to make right. I'd still like to try one sometime. Some day I'll come to my senses and say why do I have all of this? That day is not today though.

Had a good Galactic Hatchet practice tonight. We added a riff and the song is pretty much done structure wise, just working on the changes.

The speakers don't make that crunch when I lightly push. But I'm not very familiar with cabs, I'm better with instrument circuits and learning amp stuff from me pappy.

I had a peavey 2x15 two summers ago and it had a bum voice coil and it would crunch. I took it to a crazy speaker guy in town and he grabbed a razor and sliced my speaker to pieces without asking. Though he knew his stuff, and the speaker was fried, I walked out right then and never returned. To hell with someone who'd not even ask if they can touch your gear let alone slice it in half.
