For me, unless you have a Pre that you really love, I would avoid the slave. Those would be boobies for adding more cabs and power to and existing setup, but I still want a little eq control before the power section.

That said, it would really come down to what is available for you to play. Hard to say what will work for you tonally, but there are a number of good starting points. Taking Orange and Peavey out of the running will take away some of the common sleeping gems, but it is what it is. Look at the standard boutique/limited production tube amps. Reeves, Hiwatt, etc.

Something will catch your ear.

What kind of jing you looking to drop? Sky's the limit if you've got the dough. If you are looking at going all-in, I'd go with a Dunwich. You know him, you've seen the work, you have reviews from people you know and trust in regard to tone, you can customize it however you two decide would fit your needs. Seem pretty simple to me.
If I were going to spend Hi Tone like money, I'm going Dunwich.

I'm (in general) not a fan of (newer) orange tone. And I've played the alpha bass and the vtb. I think they are kinda dull. The cl400 is too big and most other peavey's are guitar amps or rare.

Well, doing the tube power/pedal pre will certainly open up the field for sonic experimentation.
Are you looking for a tube amp that will be "your" tone, or one that simply has the tone you like best?
If it's the former, then a tube slave with the pedal pre would be the way to go. Lots of experimenting available that way. And, the real tone comes from the power tubes, right?

The EQD/Juan Alderete clinic last night was awesome. Juan is a super cool dude. Real down to earth and just loves talking about bass and gear. Kind of forgot he was famous until he offhandedly mentioned having a different approach to bass than Flea when Mars Volta toured with RHCP lol. He went through the whole board giving an overview of most of EQD's pedals, his favorite settings, he stacked a couple of Rainbow Machines and did some crazy stuff, showed some of the wild noises he can make combining different pedals, etc. Even let some people come up and play his bass, and also let someone play guitar through the pedal board while he knob tweaked a bunch of pedals. There was also an employee from EQD there and it was pretty cool. EQD has a lot of cool stuff that I didn't know existed. Gonna have to try some of their stuff out.

P:if you don't know what that sounds like I can't help.

Reverse P: Similar but the E&A strings are little less "thick" in tone. Where as the D&G are a little more. I dig them allot. Hard to find passive ones that aren't entry level bullshiit.
One day I'll make my own with the whole pickup just a smidge closer to the neck for better bass response across all strings.
