Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

So say I wanted to go from a 126. To a 120., do you guys think I'll need to adjust my three point bridge for proper action and that will be the end of it or so you think you need to adjust my trust rod for intonation because of the gauge difference ?

Not claiming expertise, but I just went through this recently. (Went from 105s in E-flat to 125s in C) I would guess that just changing one string will not move your neck much at all. Only one way to find out though. Just put the string on and tune it up. Play it some and let it rest overnight if you need to, and see if you notice neck bow in the morning. If you do, give the truss rod an 1/8th turn (loosens strings and loosen truss rod first (left then right) - use a pencil mark to mark the origin) and see if it goes back to where you want it.

For the record on mine - the neck moved immediately when I restrung to C with the heavier strings. I tightened the truss rod just shy of a 1/4 turn and it was good. I waited a few days before screwing the pickguard back in, but it's been stable since.

On the subject of gear a friend of mine joined a ska band and needed bass gear and asked me to find him a solid bass and rig. I said ok and in like a few minutes found several options in his budget and he says ok, then shows up at my place a little later with a behringer combo that cost well over his budget and a borrowed bass from his drummer (its a lefty so he strung up backwards).

Anyways he's convinced he got an awesome deal, but keeps asking to use my basses and pedals and stuff for practices and to take to shows and I told him the only one I'd consider letting him use is my only one in service so I'd rather not and he seemed ok but is it wrong on my part not to want to give him my gear to take wherever? He asked for my input and ignored it and blew his budget so if he does anything to hurt my stuff I'm out of pocket.
It isn't wrong. Your friend is an idiot. I wouldn't loan him stuff, either.

I'm surprised you didn't tell him so when he showed up with a Behringer combo and a borrowed bass.

Not sure your level of friendship, but I call my friends on ********. Half serious, half joking, of course. It's the serious half you have to watch for.

Wow that was the fastest craigslist deal ever. Ender suggested I look into an lpb-1 I look them up on craigslist and see that ds-1 and it for $40, email the guy and he texts me back and says he'll do $30 and he just happened to have them in his car and he was driving two streets over from my house. All together maybe 20-30 minutes lol.

To be honest, I don't really like the sound of the BB fuzz on bass. I do like it on guitar though. Same with the TAFM as well. I've tried both in practice and recording situations and not been happy with the sound, but loved how they sounded on guitars.

What's a tafm?

And well I got my basses, bass vi, electric guitar and acoustic, surely at least one will be neato sounding.

Would you be surprised if I said it was the dude who tore up his 4x12 to keep it from being stolen :dead:

If he asks again I will... He's not the only guy to ask my opinion then ignore it on gear purchases, but he's the only one to come ask to use my stuff after.

Really my opinion isn't special on tone but getting a deal. And all that takes is research maybe more time for that if your new to gear, but it just seems most people hate the idea of saving money and getting a better anything if it takes any time.

I've had fiends do this with me on multiple occasions with gear and even more with vehicle purchases. Then they buy the car I told them NOT TO BUY and complain and have me come over to help them fix it. >_>

Honestly I find it amusing he's making such a big fuzz (see what i did there) out of it, even though the only gear i've bought since christmas is one cab, and only because he insisted I needed the matched pair. I've pretty much stopped playing after my bands split up last christmas.

He's right tho, i definitely should not get cabs i can't either power or move, lol.

If anyone needs to stop buying cabs...its this guy. Still don't have a use for that 412 I bought. But it looks cool in the wall of peavey.
