Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

IMG_20140723_220303.jpg

Printed posters for next weeks show, hung one up at Exclusive Co. "Say it with me, Exclusive Co." Had to browse...

Wow went to ska buddies band practice, the guy who asked to borrow my bass stuff. So he saw I had those peavey PA cabs that need speakers or wiring. And is convinced I'm gonna have a working PA. In fact he's so convinced he told his band with me there I will have a PA they can use shortly!

If I hadn't just met the singer and she wasn't cute I'd have told him off right there, but tomorrow I'll probably have to say something to him along the lines of throw down on parts for fixing it and getting a mixer or figure something out between yourselves.

What's a tafm?

And well I got my basses, bass vi, electric guitar and acoustic, surely at least one will be neato sounding.

Would you be surprised if I said it was the dude who tore up his 4x12 to keep it from being stolen :dead:
Ha ha, no, I would not be surprised at all. Not the sharpest tool in the shed, that fellow.

If he asks again I will... He's not the only guy to ask my opinion then ignore it on gear purchases, but he's the only one to come ask to use my stuff after.

Really my opinion isn't special on tone but getting a deal. And all that takes is research maybe more time for that if your new to gear, but it just seems most people hate the idea of saving money and getting a better anything if it takes any time.
Yeah, you recommended, I'm sure, affordable stuff that would still sound decent. And the idiot goes and gets an overpriced Behringer.

Most stuff you can get several sounds out of, so I don't think tone should be that much a consideration in cheap gear (except stuff that has a baked in sound that's extreme and cannot actually be dialed out).

Watch, it's going to break, and then you're going to say "I told you so," and he's going to be mad about it.

i've been using mine in 'tandem' recently and it really shines when used with other pedals. i either stack it before the hotcake with the neck pickup or alongside a DS-1 on the bridge pickup for an angry fizz with a massive girthy low end. sounds to my ears very similar to the megalith.
I can't imagine using more than one drive/fuzz pedal at a time. Always just sounds too noisy to me and note definition goes out the window.

Guitar player in the last band would ask my advice about gear then disregard it or do the exact opposite over and over again. Eventually he'd come back around to trying what i suggested then tell me all about how he figured out whatever part of the tone quest he was on.

It really got annoying after a while. I mean, it's my job to be educated about gear, it's what i do. I'd never give bad advice or let my personal tastes color what i recommended. It just got kind of insulting after a while.
Definitely. It's one thing if it happens once, but if people do it over and over again it's like "dude, why are you even asking me?" It can really be insulting.

Thanks for the Mudbutt Bluebeard suggestions Gents!!! I would of never though to drop the tone that low. Man I dig it set to Mudbutt. I think with Bluebeard set to smooth fuzz and Ron FN Swanson set to crazy fuzz I got bass fuzz covered now and can sell of the Fender Sub-Lime.
So what you're saying is: the Sub-Lime is as good as 2 other fuzz pedals?

It is really sweet but only on bass, it can go from overdrive to high gain muffy fuzz but it doesn't do crazy fuzz because it is muffy not super fuzzy like ol Ron FN Swanson. Plus I just landed a SmallSound BigSound Mini OD! So kind of need to move one unit and the one to move is the one that doesn't do both bass and guitar. I always try to sell to buy so something has to give. Plus I don't have the heart to sell my Bluebeard.

Just picked up my SVT from the shop. I have to give a shout-out to my favorite amp and instrument guy Chris Barnett. Chris stoked me.

He says, "You needed some pre-amp tubes, and I had two of these so I gave you one."

Shows me this:

Thats a 1945 US Navy tube, NOS.

wow, who knows if that sounds good, but a 1945 US navy tube is shaging rad.

The only CoM I've listened to was the last one and it is freaking rad. I love how the one track has like 3 bass solos in it haha.

Jamming in B was pretty fun last night. We reworked one of our existing songs that hasn't made it to a release yet in a lower key and also jammed on some other stuff. Preferred the tone of having the bridge pickup solo'd. Sounded fantastic straight into the Orange, and also was getting some killer tones with the Bluebeard.
