Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I do not like the Camaro, but the z/28 is murdering tracks. I don't like the mustangs, either. Will be interesting to see what an IRS does for it, though.

I'm a wagon fanatic. Dream wagon is a Merc C63 AMG 507, or an E63 AMG. Right now I'm only able to afford to live in the land of Japanese mass market rides...Subaru Legacy GT wagon, but that's a ride that can be beefed up considerably on the cheap
There were 2 pro Camaros doing shakedown runs at the track I raced 2 weeks ago. The sound of them at WOT coming down a straight was shaging music.

Honda Element is the ultimate gear hauler.

73ft³ of storage with rear seats removed.
Been driving mine for almost 10 years.
Stupid amount of space to haul.
22mpg wasn't that bad when I got it. Although now-a-days just about anything beats that.
At the time I was looking for a station wagon but the only thing near me was that stupid Matrix. Kinda turned me off Toyota it handled so bad. I'm disappointed there weren't any Suburu dealers nearby, seems like they always had some sort of wagon.

I will say I drove an f250 with the powerstroke diesel for like 4 years at work. That thing had incredible torque. I made it do some stupid stupid things and it never let me down. Not fast but I'm in no hurry. I'd snatch one up on a heartbeat if the deal was right.

I've been looking to get a trailer for my corolla, I'm just taking my time but I'd just buy one off craigslist.

Got a pair of balls hanging from your hitch?

I eventually will get a featherlight enclosed trailer but not until I move out to a house and have a spot to put it. And maybe I should get a pair of those chrome balls...nah I'll make a peavey cover!

I think ford stopped making rangers because they were making money off them and had all the bugs worked out.

Wrong... its because we americans can't fit in them any more, we're all too fat, every single one of us. The world Ranger with diesel engine option plus a 4 door cab sells great in countries with skinny people.

They used the same frame rails in the last year ranger as they did in first year rangers. Real life, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

And not a day goes by that I dont miss my 92 Ford Ranger in Metallic Calypso Green.

And that's why it's not really the ultimate gear hauler. Its engine is way overkill for music equipment.

You don't need something with a ton of power and torque for musical equipment. Amps and cabs, though they're heavy for us to carry around, aren't actually that heavy.

Me hauling my and my guitarist's rigs basically equates to me driving with three passengers in terms of space.

If you can't fit an 810 in a station wagon or a hatchback, no offense, but you suck at cab tetris.

My friend regularly used to haul his SVT rig around in a tiny hyundai sedan.

Yeah, they're rad. We played a show with them last year.

For me it is more of the "massive enclosed packing space" that matters. My rig, two guitar rigs, drums. Full PA, mains, monitors, subs, rack with board and amps. not to mention 4 dudes. Not fitting all of that in one trip, unless you have a big ass van.

I told you live in the vega cave, and a trailer is a second home.

And hey now I rode in those little flip out "back seats" plenty of times, I dig the sideways riding. My Volvo wagon had a third seat that faced backwards. Friends on trees loved riding back there

We just rented a uhaul for the show last week. Fit everything in and could have brought all my cabs and another drumset, essentially another band easy. And for $50 for one night, basically what a full tank would cost for the unroadworthy Vega van, not to mention no fear of car or human death, it was totally worth it.

Oh speaking of u haul...I feel I'm in the clear and can finally tell this. Loading out of the show last week. A very stoned drummer of Serpent Lung backed straight into the u hauls front passenger fender, only moments after talking about his first couple days on the job as a taxi driver in Madison and how crazy it is. Like never looked back, or remotely turned the wheel, wasn't flooring it but just let off the gas and bonk into the van!!!! Made a big wok sized dent. None of us knew what to do, we contemplated popping the dent out of this thick steel fender but that wasn't going to happen. So I finally said screw it I'll return it and hope they don't check and if they do find it I'll play dumb. The drummer agreed to pay for any damages if that situation were to arise. So next day I'm returning the van. I back it up as closer as possible to the van next to it and put the windshield sign up. Hand the guy the keys and he says hold on let me go check the van. Im thinking great he'll find the dent, what now? But NO, he checks the wrong van!!!! I put the windshield thing up and the van I parked right next to didn't have it up, I'm guessing he figured that was the one I rented!!!! He walked past the dent like 5 times!!!! I was chuckling to myself from the service desk the entire time.

I then proceeded to leave my windows open in a heavy rain fall...karmas a bitch.

Now if you had just never turned your van in and pulled that off. Doomhaul

Don't. Balls on your vehicle tend to mean "this person is a douche... feel free to be a total dick to them, to as much extent as you can get away with."

The Ford Ranger is a great little truck.

Yeah... I get that. Just would be nice to have a ton of cargo space without the gas requirements.

For Catapult, I don't think there actually is a regular car/truck/van that would fit all of us and our gear. Maybe a very large van, but we'd have to get amazing at gear tetris.

More like we take not u haul.

The sarcasm donot work I guess.

Up your gear tetris man! I'm the king in our band.

So since I'm bad with money, and never content with anything I grabbed a couple random pieces of gear over the last couple weeks, wasn't really in the market for either, but the prices were right.

First while browsing around various sites looking for a new home/recording rig I discovered that Ampeg made the SVT-III non-pro amp. I've heard and played the SVT 3pro and have always been underwhelmed by them. However the non-pro features the exact same preamp from the SVT-II tube amp, which just so happened to be tied for my favorite tube amp I'd ever owned. That preamp coupled with a 350 watt SS power section...for $350 to my door, how could I not try it out?

Turns out, was absolutely worth it, nails the classic old school ampeg tone, and for a 350 watt SS amp, it get's surprisingly loud. Hooked up to heritage 8x10 and the volume around 3:00 (there's only 1 volume knob, like the original SVTs) it's loud enough for any normal band. Line out the preamp signal into the Carvin power amp with the 66 and it's more than loud enough for my band. Used it at a couple of practices, and that outdoor gig we did last weekend, sounded fantastic. And since I can run the internal power amp into the 8x10, I'm now able to bridge the Carvin at 3800 watts, which is super awesome.

Second, after about 6 months with the Hondo, I've decided that while I absolutely love the tone, I'm just not comfortable playing it. It was most noticeable at stoner pop band practice the other week. Fine enough for sitting around my apartment, but when an actual practice came into play, not digging it, plus the 3-point bridge just sucks, and can't be swapped for the hipshot (slightly different size). Coupled with my EGC, and G3 that's in the works, I really didn't see the need for 3 black double cut style basses. So I looked around and found a very reasonably priced Aria lawsuit P-bass from 1977, as while the Hondo sounded better than my 78 Fender, the P-bass was much more comfortable to play. Gonna swap the pickup from the Hondo into the P-bass and then sell the Hondo. Don't have it yet, but I should be getting it sometime in the next week or so.
