Live at Leeds” tone.

My favourite live rock album ever since I first heard it in my teens. It’s why I’ve played the bass guitar for the last 40 years.

Oh, and so I’m doing some “silent” practice with just my Bass > Empress BC > S300 > WD800 (with the para eq off so some additional colouring but not a lot) > headphone out into a set of Westone IEMs. (S300 settings in pic).
So it’s weird. I keep having to pop a monitor out of one of my ears to make sure that my AK’s are actually disconnected from my amp. I honestly feel like I’m sitting right next to my cabs live.

my tech 21 Leeds is my favorite pedal, but it has to be first in my chain. For whatever reason, if I run it after other effects, it just totally cancels their effect and it’s all the Leeds pedal sound.

I'm a huge fan of both the Leeds and Oxford pedals. They aren't the most bass-friendly overdrives, but I can find killer tones without much difficulty. That said, if Tim offers a Hiwatt or Orange sim, I'll definitely give a listen.

For decades, one of my guilty pleasures has been panning "Live at Leeds" far over to the left. No disrespect to Pete, but it's a thrill to hear Ox in all his glory. On that album, Ox is full left, Pete is full right... just like live! I believe the same is true for the live version of "My Wife" from the "Kids are Alright" soundtrack album.

Which hiwatt?

The DR201 is usually the most common Hiwatt preamp made into pedals, and I assume that is what the Tech 21 Leeds is based on. I think John Entwistle's Hiwatt was the CP103, which was similar to the DR, but didn't have a mid control.

I found this info on his amps from a Who fanpage site:

• Amplifiers:
  • Three Hiwatt DR103 100-watt amps customised to the CP103 spec (i.e., no “The Who” faceplate).
  • Beginning early 1970: three Hiwatt CP103 100-watt amps. John also used two Hiwatt DR201 200-watt amps with one customised Hiwatt DR103 100-watt amp.
  These amplifiers had no middle or presence controls, unlike the standard DR103.
  
  Controls, from left to right: Four inputs; Volumes 1, 2, 3, 4; Treble, Bass, Master Volume; Standby, Mains.
  
  Features: Five preamp valves (four 12AX7/ECC83 and one 12AT7/ECC81); four EL34output valves; Partridge transformers; four individual inputs (1 and 2 differently voiced brighter than 3 and 4) with four independent volume controls; 100 watts R.M.S. into an 8 ohm output impedance.

Asking for a friend.

you can run up to 18v. (all of the caps are rated for a minimum 25V).

Higher voltages sound even better to me!

I’ll need to do a sanity check. I know the power supply filter cap is probably 25v but it *might* be 35v. I’ll need to verify on the BOM so don’t run more than 18 “for now”

Mine was scheduled for Wednesday according to USPS but had a nice surprise today! Playing around with it and got one tone out of many that inspired me to put on Grand Funk’s live version of Inside Looking Out.

with a 9volt supply what is the recommended current to use? I have several choices. 100, 200 or 500 milliamperes. Or better yet what is the current draw for 9v?

I'll double check, but the relays are the big power sucks at approx 40-42mA each. so right away you're at around 80-84mA when both channels are on.

when I test mine i use a 9V/100mA supply and it's good.

Came home today to a nice surprise.... The Super 300 arrived.... a couple initial things I noticed right off.... It looks great in the pics but looks even better in person! It’s also a bit smaller than I figured on and that a great thing for me!

Only had about 45 minutes to just get a taste- Need more time with it of course, but as has already need stated- It’s hard to make this pedal sound bad. Based on the few clips I’d heard, it is more versatile than I was expecting. This pedal may replace at least a couple I have on the board.

I’d planned on using the S300 for a certain “ampegy” overdriven sound to kick on and off as needed- but it sounds great warm and fat too. I’ll have to think this as I may be more of an always on pedal.

Mine landed today, a few days early. Definitely has the “SVT” vibe happening. Need to spend more time dialing it in. Not sure if I dug it with my DSN OCS Mini or not. I’ll run the S300 into my CAB M next.
