Switching grill cloth on current Ampeg SVT cabs

They make (or at least made) a series of Ampeg cabs that just have the silver grill cloth. It was the AV series, exact same as the other series just with the silver.

I have the SVT-610AV.

john, did you do that on a 410HE or 410HLF? I have the 410HLF and wondering how much material I would need....i guess I could measure, but thought I would check since I am at work.

I recovered a 350h head and a 410he cab in old style Ampeg grill cloth.
I was tired of the black. I did keep the pipeing though.

That looks nice but kinda looks more like a Fender grill cloth..

mine is a SVT410HLF. it requires 1 yard of grill cloth.

Johnk, do you have a link or something to a tutorial on how do do the entire thing? I'm picking up a 410HLF tomorrow, and I would love do do this! But can you keep the piping? Or will you have to re-do it?

I know this is an old post, but have any of you re-grilled your baffles and have added the white piping?

Is it difficult to remove the piping from the cabinet without tearing it?

the piping is easy to remove cleanly without any damage. it's the zillion staples that hold the grill cloth on that's the hard ( as in time consuming) part.

yeah. i wanted them to look like a vintage cab, or at least like the new AV models, and i think that the piping looks out of place on the silver-blue grills.

here's a pic of my 810E that i retolexed from the ripped up nubby tolex to the smoother tolex like they use on my VR head. i also regrilled it with OEM ampeg blue-silver cloth.

the cab only cost me $300, and all of the drivers worked perfect, but it was really beat up. one caster was missing a wheel and the other one was bent. the towel bar had a big dent in it and one of the corners was missing, so i stripped it down to the wood, filled the dents and gouges with bondo, sanded it, retolexed & regrilled it and replaced the casters with better rubber wheeled ones, and corners and towel bar with OEM ones.

i also ended up replacing the top four 10's with 32 ohm Jensen mod50's since it was one of the dark sounding cabs, and now it sounds awesome (and IMO, looks pretty good too)

I have an svt 210he and an svt 410hlf, both are 2006 USA models. I am planning on finding a 410he or hen as well. The original thought was to re-grill all three. Once I get to them, I will let you guys know what happened. I am certainly far from skilled, unlike johnk_10, but I really want to try it.

John did all the heavy lifting (no SVT pun intended) by recommending the removal of piping and the adding of 1/8th inch modeling plywood on 2 adjacent sides. I followed his tip to the letter in re-grilling my 610HLF. It looks awesome and was actually fun to do in the end; I am no craftsman by any stretch of the term. Electric staple gun a must tho.
