TC Electronic RH450, RS210, RS212 Review Thread

I love other 212's I have heard, and that is why I really want to hear the rs 212.

I told someone this (maybe you, can't remember), but the gs112 sounds more like the rs210 than the rs212 to my ears.

Just wondering for the guys that don't feel the RH450 is loud enough when compared to the Shuttle 9.0 or MB SD800 which BTW it shouldn't be based on power specs. Is your volume preset feature in the Shift /Tubetone mode set full clockwise? If it's full counterclockwise it's like a 12db cut in gain I think. When I got my 450 the volume presets were all in the full cut mode until I figured it out. Setting them full clockwise definitely gives you a bump in volume.

Very good point!!!

I always check this - these amps when cranked right up are LOUD with two cabs, if you need more volume add a third cab.

I have a 410 with 2 x 212s and cranked it up in my (large) shop and it was more than enough for a large venue IMHO - it was louder than an SVT810/SVT head put it that way. Yes it surprised me too!

You know, that's an excellent point. My RH450 had the preset volume maxed out of the box. If someone got one that wasn't like this though, it would definitely drop the over-all volume down significantly, and most folks who didn't read the manual would probably never figure it out since it's not something that is very common.

Good point on the preset volume; mine were down, though it may have been something "I" set when initially playing around with the new set up and "missing" that part in the manual, though it actually had been addressed in the earlier pages of this thread.

So far, I have only 2 gigs and one rehearsal with the new new TC stuff (head, 2 2x10's); I'm hoping now that things seem to be more fine tuned and adjusted, I should be able to work with the master volume @ around 10 - 11; it would be nice if I could keep it at 9/9:30; as always, depends on drummer and cymbal volume a constant issue we need to address.

I'm really excited as I think I have this thing set just about right to compensate for the Stingray 5's lack of low mid range, so I've copied the new main setting over, with some subtle tweaks so I can a/b mid song to see what sits better.

Of course, you never know what goes with the ever changing room situation...

It depends on the bass I'm playing, along with EQ and tubetone. I just adjust each channel so they even out. For me, preset 1 is my DJ with a clean, punchy tone. Preset 2 is the DJ with some overdrive. Preset 3 is for my Duck Dunn. I can switch between them without any volume increases thanks to the preset level.

My Rh 450 should arrive on Monday and I am totally psyched. Thanks for all the great info. Unfortunately, it doesn't arrive in time for my blues jam on Sunday! :(

After much thought and great input from Eublett, I think I am going to order the 212 and the 210 and stack them, and see how that works.

If I don't like either the 212 or the 210, I figure someone here will trade with me for the other;)

Just a suggestion for keeping you sound consistent from room to room. I have been using an Auralex Gramma to set my speakers on for years now and get a way more predictable and powerful sound. I do not get that boomy resonance, losing volume and frequency to stage absorption. I would not set a huge stack of speakers on it on a rickety stage and you do not need it on concrete floor but otherwise (and with my TC rs210s) it works awsome. Almost every recording studio has a pair isolating their nearfield monitors.

Off topic here, but how do you like the Duck Dunn? I am jonesing for a great P bass so I can have a more traditional sound in my toolbox than my Sadowsky. I love the look of the Dunn and the jazz neck. How does it compare with the BG?

I have had a fiddle with the Rh450 and it looks very well made and the actual idea is great. However I felt it lacked sparkle and the tube tone wasn't that great :( I wanted to like it.

For it's price I was expecting a little more. At 8 ohms, it must get beaten by the shuttle 9.0?!

The finish on the cabs wasn't great but apparently the new ones have been upgraded. I missed the high end.

I need to fiddle more with one before I decide on anything!

I'm sure it does get beaten by the Shuttle 9.0 but to me the RH450 should be compared to the 6.0 power wise since their power ratings are much closer. As far as "sparkle" goes, you can get a lot of sparkle with the RH450 if you tweak the treble center. Of course it won't sound as sparkly as the Shuttle when set flat but I run my treble control around 2 o'clock and it gives me a lot of nice high end through the RS210 and 212 cabs. I know it's probably totally different for a fiddle as I am using it for bass. If you want more top end maybe the Staccato '51 might be better since the treble extends up to 10k.

Somehow the RH450 sounds amazing through ampeg cabinets when it comes to giving it high end punch. I have an HLF610 as backline at a regular gig I do and it kills through it! I am happy with my TC's but if you want more sparkle the new Ampeg cabs are great with the RH450. Also I recommend using higher quality cables through-out you set-up for the best performance in general with you whole rig. Mogami , or any of the higher end well reviewed cables for instrument and speaker will take a blanket off your sound and make it sparkle and punch. Cables really matter and are a relatively inexpensive way to make EVERYTHING that comes out of your bass sound better.

Be sure and change the center frequencies of the EQ...I was not impressed at all by the amp right out of the box. The Channel boost was turned all the way down on mine when I got it to so I was REALLY woried about volume...I was messing with it about 10 AM this morning at my mother's house (home for the holidays) and it was KICKING through my Earcandy Bassbomb (2X12 4 Ohms). The phone rang and rang and I thought who the he&& keeps calling and letting the phone ring so many times. It finally stopped and I heard a knocking at the window a few minutes later. It was the neighbor (she had been the one calling on the phone) she told me that it was rattling her pictures off the wall of her house! ( I swear that it is what she said, I do not know if she meant figuratively or literally but that is what she said) I had been working with the EQ points at a loud gigging and I was slapping and playing fingerstyle. She said really liked the playing but had been late last night and was hoping I could turn it down a little. Now heres the funny part. After she left I thought Geez how loud could it really be? She lives a good ways away and I was thinking there was no way she could hear my INSIDE the house in the basement which is surrounded by EARTH on 3 sides. The only visible side was the side facing her house. Just for kicks and grins I walked off the distance from the window to her house...91 PACES! At about 2.5 to 3 feet per pace that is WELL over 250 feet away!!! I thought she must be nuts...As I was walking back to the house her son ( who was about 18 or 19 also home for the holidays) said "Hey man you are rattling stuff in the house with that music but it sounds really good!"

More to come after a few more gigs but I can say that I have used it on about 7 gigs and sessions and so far I am really liking the results. I admit that it took me some tweaking to really get it to where I like it from the initial presets but it sounds REALLY good to me right now. My crew LOVES it. I have been using the 450 and a couple of different cabs including an MP415 PA speaker with EXCELLENT results. I am loving the old school tone I got going on right now with the Earcandy! It is LOUD and punchy and VERY clear. If this thing is not loud enough for you then I suggest checking your preamp gain first. MAKE sure that you set it up as instructed. Turn the gain up until you see the clip light when you hit it hard and THEN back it down a bit from there. Also make sure that the channel gain is set ether all the way up or near it as mentioned and make sure that it is up on ALL your presets. Even at about 10 o'clock on the master through the Earcandy it is pretty loud and I like to FEEL what I am playing...Give it a shot!

I have to pipe in here some. I haven't gigged my RH450 yet but I a/b it with my DB750 into my HS410 yesterday in my kitchen/dining room which is the biggest area I have available in my house. I stood close and also at least 18ft. away. The RH450 can get pretty darn close to the DB750's loudness and hefty punch. Of course the RH450 was not flat, I found a very pleasing and friggin' loud punchy setting. So far I'm impressed.

Sounds like you got a winner there Tommix!
Also, thanks to Kjung for pm-ing awhile back and saying I ought to try this head with my HS410.
