Tech 21 VT Bass

I don't have my VT yet so this is all theortical at this point. I've got a Hartke VXL Bass Attack which (in case you didn't know) has a switchable analog tube amp modeler, switchable variable mid-scoop, and a nicely transparent DI - and it runs off a 9v or phantom power. It has three outputs: affected/unaffected XLR and 1/4" and an unaffected bypass out. I plan on running my bass into the VT and then into the Bass Attack, sending the XLR signal out of the Bass Attack to the FOH, and sending the affected signal from the 1/4" output to my amp. I got my Bass Attack for $50 shipped!

Ah, but that would provide post VT Bass to the amp. I'm looking for unaffected.

Interesting. Do you have any other pedals in your chain now (even a tuner)? I am sure you can get an ABY and a regular passive DI to do this. My Boss TU2 has two outs (one that mutes when the button is pushed). You could split the signal before the VT and add a DI after...sounds unnecessarily complicated though.

Sometimes but nothing that splits the signal. I suppose an ABY may be the way to go.

Collectively, what do you think of a simple 1/4 Y cord with one end of the Y going VT BASS>DI>FOH and the other to the amp?

Any issues with just a dumb Y cord as I really don't require switching?

I can't begin to put into words the difference this pedal has made to me. It has given me the sound i carried in my head for a long time without the weight penalties of an SVT :p

Its made me like effects that i didn't like the sound of bfore before and sold on, its given my playing a new lease of life. i wish i'd bought one earlier.

Only down side is that my pedal board is now growing..............:ninja:

Hey peeps. I'm loving my VT Bass and getting some really different sounds out of it. But damnit if I don't have the patience to wait for a programmable version... I want one now! So, i've been doing some thinking (yes it hurt) & have come up with a little circuit Invalid Link Removed

So I cracked my VT open & learnt that all 6 pot's are 100kB and no common legs. I figure I could bypass the pot's & run 18 (6 x 3 legs) busses & tap off groups of 6 trimpots that you could set to your favourite settings. The presets could be switched in with 4066 analog switching ICs & the whole shamozzle would be controlled with a 4017 counter. This setup has the possibility of 10 presets! (diagram above shows 3)

Anyone still with me?

Not sure how the real estate is going to pan out, the pcb might have to be re-housed in a bigger box, but wouldn't it be sweet if the preset pcb could fit in the VT case, & perhaps have holes in the underside to give you access to the trimpots...?!

I can feel a dream sequence coming on... cue the music!

That's pretty pie in the sky i'll admit...!

Any ideas, comments or constructive criticism?

Just a few - you can determine if they're constructive ;)

1. Watch the 4066 grounds and output bias. If you use +9v and 0 (gnd), an ac signal may have a 4.5v offset bias.

2. I would try to use a numeric display if it would fit, so I could tell which patch I was on all the time. Especially with momentary switches, you can lose count of where you are, and then you have to hear it to tell. May not work well live.

3. I think you are missing a pot in each bank (x5 should be x6). Just in the labels; it is drawn ok.

I have a feeling that if Tech21 comes out with a programmable version, it will be similar to the PBDDI, where the pot settings are stored and can be recalled via a footswitch. Not sure how that is implemented, but it certainly cuts down on the real estate 18 trimpots would take.

Hmm ok, haven't worked with them before, that will throw a spanner in the works.

I was thinking this at first - maybe modelling it like a Deep Impact's operation with one button to increment the patch & the other to activate it / bypass. You're right, it definitely would be more convenient.

Oops yes you're right, re-upped the pic.

Yeah that'd definitely be a more elegant way of doing things, it's just a bit beyond my skillset.

Thanks for your ideas.

I have had this pedal since last year - I bought it solely based on the Jimmy sound clips comparing it with his SVT. Jimmy should be an endorser as I think he is responsible for a Ton of Sales of this Pedal IMO and IME :D

What I am wondering is: Has anyone aggregated all of the posted settings into one document or link. Zoom has many of the B2 settings posted by actual users on their WEB Site.

Has anyone compiled the various settings that have worked in addition to what Tech 21 supplies in the box?

Do you think Tech 21 would be open to host a page to record the settings that folks are using. I realize there are a lot of potential variables in setting the pedal to your liking - but it would be cool to capture them all so everyone can experiment and benefit.

Naturally we could start a thread here to capture the info - but it would need to have standard info. Like but not limited to: type of Bass, Strings, Amp, Cabs and the settings of each knob on the Pedal - and maybe a short description of your interpretation of why those settings work and in what context you are using it? And Yes, I just had way too much coffee.

I think you're right. I think they should at least send me a free pedal of my choice. Lloyd Schwartz, if you're reading this, I'll take the British Character pedal, please ;)

There is a thread recently started about settings, but the only real important one to know is how to set it flat...mid, charcter, and bass all slightly past noon, highs at 10:00. From there it's all just tweaking to taste.

Yep, i like this pedal. Just used it on two gigs at the weekend.
First gig i used it through a tube head. It slightly fattened out the sound and gave me some fuzz. I just used it like a distortion pedal on that gig. Doesn't sound completly like power tube sturation but does sound good.
Second gig put it straight into the pa. Pedal always on. I had a really warm full sound. I suppose it could pass as a miced ampeg.

Most of the knobs where set around or below noon on those gigs.

I need to spend more time tweaking it but its a keeper.

Yes, Jimmy is the master and grand high poobah of all things VT Bass IMHO. I recently started a thread asking people to post their settings. Somebody posted a link to an existing thread that had a bunch (name escapes me now but THANKS!). So, I went through that one, this one and a couple other threads and compiled all the settings I could find posted into one Excel apread sheet. I also PM'd everyone asking what kind of strings they use to try to get a grasp on what kind of sound they're going for, as I'm constantly on the hunt for that perfect classic rock flat wound tone.

I'll send you an e-mail with the spread sheet. If anybody else wants them just send me a PM and I'll send it to you also.

Yeah, you don't want to do that, though you might get away with it. Two things happen: the impedance drops and resistance is added. Luckily bass doesn't suffer as much and it may sound OK when you boost the amps to compensate, but it's generally not a good idea, and if you have picky ears you'll probably hear the slight difference.

If you pick up a buffered splitter you'll find ways to use it for years. OTOH, you can find a good stereo chorus pedal to feed two amps while in bypass.

(Says me, who weekly doubles up the house Ampeg combo to his Roland Super Cube 100 Bass by going "input to input", a cable from the unused input on the Roland to the Ampeg, like in the old Jeff Beck Univox ads)

edit: Can't find the pic of Beck going input to input on Univoxes, but how about him doing it with Plushes?!!

VT = awesome.

A decent example of the tone of the pedal. Geddy Jazz w/ DiMarzio's > VT > Power Amp > SVT cab. I thought I was all clandestine and secretive about a great new discovery when it came out, but it turns out TONS of people were and are down with it. It's some hot s&*t, that little pedal.

Best,
JMJ
