The Acoustic Club

Just got myself a 408! It needs some love, but I can't wait to get my 320 on top of it!
Any suggestions on the preferred speaker replacements, Blue (middle) grill cloth availability, or wiring diagram would save me some searching on the Acoustic Forum!

Hi twhitedc,

The (3rd gen 4x15) 408 cab had 'IIRC' four Eminence 75W drivers (w/the white dust domes) for a total power handling of 300W continuous. All four 8ohm speakers (upper & lower chambers) were wired in parallel for combined total impedance of 2ohms. There is a company that is building a '408 Reissue' cabinet that looked like a very good replica when I came across it... found it on the net but unfortunately I don't remember their address; I think I printed their 408 page 'w/pics' so if I come across it again I'll post it! I believe the speakers they were using were the "Eminence" 8ohm CB-158. I have the Eminence catalog and another strong contender to live in that cabinet is their BASSLITE SERIES C2515; very similar to the CB158. It has a Neo magnet, so the cab would weigh a lot less "using four" for transport! The other thing I like about these BASSLITES is that it comes in 4ohms or 8ohms, so you could wire it in parallel (8ohm version) for 2ohms, or get the 4ohm version and use a series/parallel scheme for a combined total impedance of 4ohms!

There's no 'Blue middle grill cloth' on the 408; you must be thinking of the 301/360. It does, however, have a blue stripe (Acoustic logo) at the top of the upper grill, and a White rand that frames both the upper and lower black mesh grills. You can buy the black mesh to cover the center port chamber from amazon.com or PartsExpress; it comes in a roll of various lengths... for convenience. Best of luck with your new project, Cheers!

In case you weren't too sure of how to wire four, 4ohm drivers for a total of 4ohms, here's a Series/parallel wiring diagram Rgds!

EDIT: And here's a Parallel diagram below!

No blue cloth ever.

Getting ready to hit the road with Howlin' Rain in a month and trying to decide which set up I should bring with me... Space might be a problem though cause I'll be in a van. I was thinking of the GK 4-12 folded cab I bought last spring and running the Acoustic re-enterent horn for some high freq snarl. I have a 106 loaded with Altec 421 sitting here staring me in the face but I also have a 402 with white cone Yamahas that sounds awesome too.

Lately for rehearsals I've been running an Acoustic single 15" horn cab with a 320 head and Gauss driver(!) and it sounds unimaginable but it would'nt hold up to a full band on stage. Wish I had two of those cause I think I've got duplicates of just about everything else at this point!

Hey peeps first post on TB.

Just started playing bass again after a few years of not playing.

Bought a fender jazz and an acoustic b450mkII.

Love the amp, originally was gonna get a fender rumble but loved the sound of the acoustic over the fender rumble500 and the option of adding 2 extra cabs. Only downside is weight but meh I'm young haha.

I'm in San Diego so maybe I'll meet some of you if anyone is local.

Got a question for anyone knowledgeable about older Acoustic Control Corp cabinets. Ive got a pair of Model 626 12" 3 way home audio cabinets. Know this is the amps section but if anyone knows what model speaker was originally in the cab Id appreciate it. I have the original drivers but both seem to be blown, if its inexpensive Id like to get them reconed, just to have the name in my house! Beautiful cabinets otherwise, all maple I believe.

Update: the white rand was on there, just painted... I cleaned it up, found an original speaker to replace the missing one, found some aftermarket footcups, but no dice on the blue strip.... Hopefully I'll get it rewired this month and we can see where we stand with the condition of the original speakers before I decide to buy 4 new ones or not. Thanks for the input!
-Cheers!

I've got an older 150 that's been sitting in an attic since the 90's. It looks like the 2nd one down in your pics. Is that 2nd gen? I wonder if anyone has a use for it? It still works just fine. Thanks for the reminder that I have it!

Thinking about it. Got quoted at $90 a piece to fix, i guess they don't need reconing just the foam around the edges. Not a lot of info on the web it seems, but I imagine they are decent cabs. Once i get some cash in maybe ill get them fixed.
picked up a another 150 head (Gen 1) yesterday. even trade for an old 12 string acoustic I had laying around.

All though I notice that it's your 370 that is plugged in. ;)

I gigged the 150 / 406 combo for almost 20 years before I finally popped one of the Altec Lansings. The head only needed repair once in that whole time. Maybe I'll put it up for trade - see if it gets any interest. Thanks for the idea!

just bought the 104 cab on the left.
Great combo right here! I'm assuming you're running the rig in Ric-O-Sound mode right? With the 470 as the high end it'll be a beast through that 104 cab. Becareful with those speakers because they can take a fair amount of lows but they can definitely blow.. and reconing is not cheap!

I will be running it stereo via ric-o-sound i just need to stop being lazy and buy a splitter. yeah the 470 and 104 cab will definitely be the highs, the 220 definitely has a better clean sound than the 470, but 470's distortion is awesome! i was actually thinking about replacing the speakers just so i dont damage them, but it sounds so good with distortion on the treble/bridge pickup.
