I have owned a separate Karlson cab w/a 300 watt Gauss woofer. It seemed a little light on deep lows. I bought it used in the 80's and had no idea what it was the whole time I owned it. I liked it for its size at the time.

I don't think the lack of bottom was the Gauss speaker's fault, but the size/design of the cab.

Hey guys, I'm looking at picking up an Acoustic 106 cabinet to go with my 150b. The guy lives about five hours away from me so I'm trying to get as much information on it as I can before I actually go to pick it up. By all appearances, this thing looks to be in beautiful condition and seems to be well worth my $150 (!!!). The only thing I'm wondering about now is if the speakers are original. He wasn't sure, so can any of you tell me an easy way for him to look and see? I would rather not waste 10 hours of travel on a cab I don't really want. Thanks!

With a 106 it all depends.

If it's a later version 106 cabinet loaded with speakers with white dust caps that's a pretty sure sign they are original.

More commonly the 106 came loaded with speakers with aluminum dust caps with a small black vent hole in the center.

If the speakers have black dust caps, they're either originals that have been reconed or else they are replacements.

The best way to determine if they're original would be to pop one out and look at the numbers stamped on the magnet. The aluminum domed speakers would likely be stamped with the Eminence model number 15FABA6B. The white-domed speaker would be stamped with the Acoustic house number 130040-x, where 'x' could be either an A or B.

And by the way, that's a great price.

I'd guess 1972-73, something like that. There should be a date code stamped on the magnet in the form of "67-yyww". The '67' identifies it as being manufactured by Eminence, the 'yy' would identify the year of manufacture, and the 'ww' would identify the week (1-52).

Someone could have put Altecs in there, and they probably would have sounded good, but they were never a factory option in the 402 cabinet that I've ever seen.

Acoustic did offer an enhanced version of the 106 2x15" cabinet with two Altec drivers. That rare cabinet's model number was 109.

The 402 cabinet was always loaded at the factory with white-domed 15" drivers. Mostly Eminence, but some were made by CTS.

If your 402's speakers had black dust caps, then either those dust caps were painted or had been replaced (likely as part of a reconing), or else the speakers weren't original. No way to tell now who made them.

I gutted my 201 cab, and have two new Eminence Delta 15A ready for installation. I will remove the horn, but not sure what to do with the hole. I have a lead on a 150 head, would be sweet if that one would fit inside the space of the horn. Still run a speaker cable on the outside, this way i can use the cab still with my 270 head, or standalone with the 150.
