The Acoustic Club

Hello!

I'm a fairly new bassist (maybe about 10 months now, however I've been playing other instruments such as piano for many many years), and i am sincerely interested in getting an acoustic amp.

At the moment i have a Peavey TnT100 amp that my dad gave to me, and it is veeeeery heavy. Normally I would be content with this, but i've told my church music ministry i'd like to play bass during masses and they told me i would have to bring my own amp.

I was wondering if the B100 is light enough to be able to transport back and forth from masses & practices.

Would it be crazy to get a b600h and stick it on some 2x10 cab? What 'ohms' should the cab have? What 'ohms' should the cab have if I put a 15 cab with it... or a 4x10 cab later?

Or just give me a quick formula if possible...

I was thinking about getting one of the import acoustic heads and pairing it with a 2x10. (first stack, so I feel like I'll make some kind of mistake)

Brian from Acoustic here. The new B210 Neo and B115 Neo cabs are just hitting the stores now. 400 watts power handling at 8ohms and will work great with your B600H.

I'm not a pro electrical or sound engineer, but I do have over 40 years experience with band equipment and home hi-fi. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Here goes:

> all amps are designed to operate with speakers of a certain resistance (Ohms).

> Most music instrument amps will operate at either 4 or 8 ohms, or both. A few will go all the way down to 2 Ohms, but these are usually (always?) deigned to operate with cabs made to be used with that a particular amp.

> A multi Ohm amp will always put out more power (watts)at lower Ohms. Examples: The amp head on my Acoustic B260 mini-stack puts out 4 ohms only while my Gallien-Krueger MB210 combo puts out 500w @ 4 ohms and 350W @ 8 Ohms.

Just for my B200 Combo Delivered today!, Wow what sound.. I haven't gotten it fine tuned yet but I know the neighbors are gonna love me!!!

Hit me up with a number sir.

Have had a B20 since October. Fantastic amp! And much more "Fantastic-er" using a VT Bass with it as an always-on pedal. Really shines with it. Couldn't believe the tone I was able to get with the addition of the VT. Strongly suggest B20 users (and others) to give it a try. But, keep the amp volume down to just 1 or 2 when you first plug the VT in. It acts as a very effective pre-amp and adds tons of volume.

Using it with my short-scale 6-string Schecter Hellcat VI and an effects pedalboard.

Did a lot of research and listening before I got it. Wanted a lower-wattage, smallish practice amp BUT with a 12" or 15" NOT a 10". Makes all the difference. The ability to plug in a MP3 player and earphones is a strong plus. Lack of a Fx Loop and direct-out was a minus - but, something I could live with. At this price it can't be beat. A real bargain. Very, very pleased with my decision.
 
Thankfully I don't need to use my B20 as much these days. I usually use it when I'm working on new circuits on my breadboard and I need an amp I can move easily.

I almost want to sell it and get the Mini 260 rig if it sounds similar (or better). Love the VT though - it's always on in my dual amp main rig setup.

It's Impedance, not resistance. Resistance is "static". Impedance is basically an electrical "back pressure" created by moving a coil within a magnetic field. Both impedance and resistance are measured in ohms. A driver (speaker) is a liner electric motor. Current sent through the voice coil, which is suspended within a magnetic field, causes physical motion that is transmitted to the air, producing sound. The same motion, of a coil within a magnetic field, amounts to an electric generator, that produces an AC current in the opposite direction of the input signal. This is impedance (resistance would be measured statically, with no signal input to the coil). At some frequency, where the speaker is most efficient, it will generate the greatest "back pressure", or impedance. This is the "resonant frequency" that you see in driver specifications. Impedance depends on frequency of the input signal. It's common (although not necessarily always the case) that speakers' power handling ability is given at the resonant frequency.

Most music instrument amps will operate at a range of impedances. Impedance is a physical property that is the same regardless of manufacturer or model. A 4-ohm cabinet made by one manufacturer will "look" identical to a 4-ohm cabinet made by a different manufacturer. The cabinets may achieve their 4-ohm ratings at different frequencies, though.

Learn Ohm's law. No amp "puts out" 4 ohms (or any other number of ohms, for that matter). Power is expressed in watts, not ohms. Any amp will produce a greater power (watts) where the load (ohms) is reduced vs. a higher load.

The above is flat-out wrong. Where multiple speakers are connected in parallel the formula for calculating the net impedance of the resulting circuit is:

R(1) * R(2) * ... * R(n)
R(Total) = ______________________
R(1) + R(2) + ... + R(n)

Example: 2 8-ohm cabinets

8 * 8 = 64
______
8 + 8 = 16

64 / 16 = 4

So, 2 8-ohm cabinets, wired in parallel, produce a net circuit impedance of 4 ohms.

The fact that you can divide 8 by 2 & get 4 is a happy coincidence that is true only in the case where you use exactly 2 cabinets of the same impedance. Where more cabinets are used, or where the impedances are different, this "formula" will not work.

Again, no amp "puts out" any number of "ohms". Amps produce power, which is measured in watts, not ohms.

Please learn some basic electronics before you try to give advice to others.
