I believe he was asking about the cabs I currently have on hand for the recording shootout...though a Genzler Array and Barefaced Super Twin may be joining them shortly :thumbsup:

Oouu yea cool, more kids comin out to play. I love it! Color me subbed. Really looking forward to this shoot out as well. All these cabs are different flavors of good so that's great.
I keep coming back to Dukes (AK) 212 Hathor. It's 43lbs, takes a 1000 watts, has mid switches for fine tuning and an open mid chamber with vents on top the cab so you can hear better, tuneable port blockers for a variety of sealed to ported vibes. And is on the taller side for a small super cab.
I like options and it seems this has more tuning options than any of the others.
I'd also really like to hear a couple of MAS cabs but as with all these boutique cabs getting to hear them is hard enough, getting them together is difficult to impossible.
I truly applaud your efforts to do this as 99% of us will probably never even hear a couple of these at the same time, let alone several.

I'm about halfway through tracking the tone samples, I'm doing around a dozen, and will be reamping as soon as I finish.

They'll run the gamut from P bass with flats to really modern stuff like this:



The end result should really give a comprehensive view of each cabs frequency response, and after I get reamps up for these first three I'll be adding another cab from Barefaced and hopefully Genzler, Audiokenisis and RevSound as well :thumbsup:

My experience exactly. If you want to get the high end right you need top quality drivers---but more importantly---crossover design is critical. That's where I see many cabs fall short. Also---if you're using effects I find that the horn loaded tweeters aren't as good as the best quality paper cone mid drivers. That's why I use paper cones up to 10khz. Then a titanium dome super tweeter to cover from 10 to 20. The paper cones seem to like effects---especially distortion.

Since apples to apples comparing is kindof hard with my cabs I'll give a quick comparison. If you're looking at Vd--which is the amount of air a driver can move---you can make an accurate comparison as far as max volume---with the best drivers you'll fartout before thermal damage.
The best "super 12" cabs will put out right around 500 cc's of air moved per 12. So---a 212 will be right around 1000 cc's.
The Bodai 28 will put out around 850 cc's. It weighs around 45#
The Bodai 38 will put out around 1250 cc's. It weighs around 62#

Just a quick update for everyone waiting for the results with baited breath ;)

Tone sample recordings are done, and there will be 6 cabs in the first round of testing: two from Barefaced, one Fearless, one LDS, one Genzler & one Audiokinesis.

The last two cabs (Genzler and Audiokinesis) will arrive next week, and I should be able to get all reamping done the same day, so I'd expect a SoundCloud playlist with all of the clips up by late week and the YouTube video up by the weekend or early the following week :thumbsup:

The Berg HD cabs are supposed to be very flat; a friend of mine is actually a beta tester for Jim, I should reach out and see if he'd be able send one of his cabs my way to add to the lineup.

I have a Quilter and a Barefaced BB2. I'm selling the Quilter, as there's a little roll-off of brightness with that amp. I'm not sure if it is the way it compresses. Others have heard similar results, but others say they don't hear any roll-off. I'm assuming cab selection plays a big role in what gets heard. To my ears, the roll-off takes some edge off some of the overdrive/distortion boxes I use, and it sounds a tad polite. It isn't drastic, but I notice it when playing solo. I haven't tried it in a mix. Since I have Demeter and Darkglass heads, the Quilter test-drive just wasn't good enough to overthrow those two. That said, it is a very nice amp. With different cabs, and/or a different tonal goal, I think it would work very nicely. I'd certainly consider the Berg (and I have been on their site, to the dismay of my wallet).

Looks like I'll actually have two Audiokinesis cabs coming in next week in addition to the Genzler: one Thunderchild and one Changeling :hyper:

The little time I spent with a Bass Block gave me a similar impression -- a bit rolled-off up top. The EQ is limited, but a clever and intuitive design, nonetheless. Despite the high end roll-off, bridge-pickup harmonics spoke nicely through the amp and my MAS 112.

Just another update: I currently have five cabs on hand (LDS, Greenboy, Barefaced, and two Genzler) with a Thunderchild being delivered tomorrow, and with any luck a Changeling loaner getting picked up from a local player as well, which will make for six or seven in total.

I have an all day session tomorrow and have to head out to Redlands to return the Genzler cabs Thursday afternoon, so I'll likely have the reamps done and uploaded to SoundCloud by Friday :thumbsup:
