My gift to myself for Christmas left for Santa's Workshop this morning. It's rather a bit of an extravagance ... not as big an extravagance as buying a Rocket Bass 115

The 42-year-old Music Man case candy strap will keep its mojo. The fabric, and the MM logo will be preserved over all new top grain leather



It's a most fitting match for the restored StingRay, I feel. This is the StingRay's strap prime — a replica of the strap Jerry Garcia used with both Alligator (the Stratocaster Graham Nash gave him for playing pedal steel on Teach Your Children), and Wolf.



The new strap will be similar to this nubuck strap she made



She does amazing work IMO
People can be most passionate about good leather, same as with good wood. Look at it from the POV of a cow, or a tree, and it's a different picture.

As far as trees and cows, made me think of the line, "bacon and eggs; a day's work for the chicken, a lifetime commitment for the pig."

It is a long time between the day it became necessary to put my bass down to see to other needs in life and the day it was time to play again. Thirty-some years, by my estimate. Thirty-two? Does it make a difference?

By chance offered a Jazz Bass to mess with just north of here. First time ever with a JB. Kind of freaks me out until I twiddle the volume knobs. A JB still freaks me out, actually. Doubt I will ever be friends with one. But I've made similar statements, e.g. will never play single coils, will never play short scale, will never play passive, will never drive a VW, will never [lots of things]

We need a pic of you playing bass with Rory.

I've only been to Belfast, Dublin, and to Rostrevor with a quick beach jaunt to Newcastle. When we get back, Donegal is on my list of places I want to see.

A day off, and a less manic approach to practicing yielded results. I started nailing sections I couldn't play before, and I can see steady improvement. Enthusiasm well maintained.

I played around with my friend's 5 string Yamaha last night at church. Pretty nice bass from what I can tell. He's been playing it for years. We had a worship team practice to get on the same page with new songs, and I sat at the back with the bass unplugged trying to figure out how to play bass from a guitar chord chart. With much helpful advice from the Yamaha's owner, I reckon before too long I'll be able to do the same thing, but with the bass plugged in! Enthusiasm increased.

It's jolly weird though, playing a bass with more strings than you're used to. I spent half my brain power making sure I was on the right strings.

Yes, I am also vexed by five strings. Did not know the bass was a five string when the sales clerk gave it to me. Fingers are flummoxed. Brain is in vapour lock. Back goes the bass. It is/was (it's sold now) a used Ibanez Artcore with a relic'd finish made to look like a termite fortress.

Use the E-string as your standard thumb-resting point and you'll do just fine (The side of your thumb will block the unwanted noises of the B-string as a surplus) After all these decades on my fiver, I often mix up the A and E string on my new acquainted 4 string

I found it helped me to play 5 frets up and use that position as my E string. That way, all my notes are as if on a short scale (which I have 4 of) with an extra high C string. Then when I need lower notes, I can just slide down to where it lurks.

May only be my odd brain that makes it work. Still thought I'd share in the hopes another get use of my idea.
