The Combo Club

Just ran the pedalboard dry for the first time ever. A single charge is good for about 8-9 hours of play. Wasn't keeping track ... and hear the squeal of a powerdown through the BA-108v2 combo. All 8 inches of an Alpha 8a upgrade to the stock 'Peg speaker.

The apparent authority of the PJB combo seems to be missing when I plug into the baby 'Peg again. There's a few hundred watts that's not there, for starters. What I hear is a whole lot of Ampeg sweetness at a very reasonable practice volume.

On my way out the door to meet new people for the first time since lockdown. Wow.

Howdy folks! My prison released me for good behavior (until Monday morning) and I haven't been on for what seems like forever. What's up? Doc looks to be buying a new bass, is that true? Tele, what do you have coming in on the UPS truck? I apologize for not going back any further to catch up. I'll try as soon as I have a free moment. Between school and #2's latest penchant for singing songs and then wanting them recorded/engineered, I haven't had much time to do much else. And SR knows, I haven't done as much in the studio this past week as I would've looked to.

I do have a little news to share though. My retirement gift showed up at my door yesterday courtesy of the big brown truck. After weeks and weeks of bass haggling, I decided to hold off since I'm still loving my Rogue in about every situation and bought a...combo! Not that I need another amp, but this one is so special it earned the right to be called my farewell present to myself.

I was seriously looking at the BOSS 210 combo but between the 50 lb weight and the fact I am past modeling amps, I decided to take a trip back to the old school and go tube. I ran across this really nice guy from N Cali who was selling his rig for exactly what I wanted to spend, and the rest is history. 20 watts, all-tube, a 112 Eminence, Lava speaker cable, and as clean as my June schedule, I think I've found the perfect studio amp. Our buddy, Soul Reflection might agree with me as he's selling everything but his truck because he's found his holy grail too. To say he wasn't an influence would be incorrect, and he'd probably be the same since I recommended this little beaut to him a month or so ago.

Can I get a number? I forgot, did we say we're counting these as combos? Miles, need a decision! :smug:

Is dat some kinda... Am-Peg or somethin? I think I've heard of those.
:D

Very pretty! What year is it?

Little combo side story.
I had the pots replaced in my Yamaha Motion B (Jade) this week, and my luthier friend said that there was some "buzz" in it that he could not seem to get rid of. It appeared every time the volumes on the two pickups (VVT set-up) were reduced from 10.

I brought over my Jazz bass and my Double Four combo to compare what he was finding. Plugged the "misbehaving" Jade to the D4 and got...silence. Plunked some notes - beauty! Stopped. Silence. Spun the knobs and tried several different settings. We found one setting that produced a tiny little hum.

Plugged in the Jazz (Silver) and got the usual results: either pickup solo had a normal amount of hum. Considerably less than Jade had when I brought it in last week.

Is the D4 an amazing combo that tamed a wayward bass? Is my luthier just far pickier about these things than I am? You decide. I'm going to go play now.

Combos- I’m In!!

This is not a big deal. Sometimes some of us have to move on. I am one of them and am not looking back. It has been fun and I have enjoyed the trip but, I am moving on and wish you all the best. I am loving my 20T with a separate R115 Cab and may buy an Ampeg cab. I do not care if it qualifies as a combo or not.

We will miss you! check in every now and then- someone will leave a light on! ;)

Initial impressions from the Orange Crush Bass 50 Combo.

Yes- it is NOT Ampeg or Fender. It can get pretty loud and keep clean, but this thing has some serious range. :jawdrop: The gain is killer, and the blend allows you to dial in a little mayhem, or a lot, without killing the low end.

Best thing is- it sounds pretty nice! Have not tried the footswitch or CabSim headphone line out yet.

2020. It, according to its former owner, sat out in his man cave and had less than 12-15 total hours of use. By the looks of it, I’d agree with him.

For the price of the head and a Lava speaker cable, he tossed in the 112 cab for free AND paid shipping! I couldn’t refuse that offer.

Combos- I’m In!!

Tele, if you know me you’d know that was purely tongue in cheek. No one logged in more aggravating minutes over that debate than I did, and yes, I agree it’s not a combo amp. But it is one sweet little combination tube amp and tuneful cabinet!

I will always have a combo in the stable as they are still easier to transport, and my Rocket Bass sound fantastic, as yours does I’m sure, but in my studio only one will serve that capacity.

This is the way. :hyper:

Safe travels, as we will both embark on this new and fantastic journey, but I do predict at some point in the future you will own a combo once again; most likely a Rocket Bass. That said, I know you have rekindled the tone you enjoyed in younger days and for that, I congratulate you.

That looks totally SWEET!!! I love the whole put it next to your computer, and XLR out tubey signal right to your interface.

FL #1, and referendums, have previously held that these are combos ...

HagInB15N.JPG . . . . . . . . . IMG_0945.JPG

Thanks to those who gave my FLness a vote of confidence. ... ...

My first decree (unofficial until ratified at exactly 2022/01/01:00:00:00.001CST) is that the Official Combosity of the Ampeg B15 remains in place. As Fearless leader and Supreme Courtier, I will stand fast on precedent[1] wherever reasonable and convenient[2]. This case is both.

[1] Not on my predecessor. That would be rude.
[2] Except when I don't.

Combos- I’m In!!

This is so cool, congrats! Inquiring minds want to know: is the DI pre- or post- EQ, or selectable?

Here wondering if my combo is too little for the very first time in my life. I have a Wednesday audition for a five piece band: female vocalist, sax, drums, and keyboard/synth playing festivals, upscale restaurants, theater venues and special events.

The correct combo answer for a festival is the PJB Roadcase that I don't yet own. ;) All very surprising to me as my thinking since lockdown is in the direction of micro ....

Take whatever is the loudest. You can always turn down. Or get something(Roadcase?)larger if needed later.
